ITT we learn that to Riemann, being financially ruined si the same as being dead.

When I got beaten in the head with a tire iron, even though I knew I almost certainly had a concussion, and knew that there was a very real possibility of dying, I elected not to go to the hospital.
Because while I knew I might die if I didn't go to the hospital, I knew that going to the hospital meant guaranteed financial ruin (I didn't have insurance at the time). And if you have a family and are living paycheck to paycheck, frequently being dead is better than financial ruin, especially in this country.
@spool32 It's a little different when your temperatures are hitting 20 degrees above your average high than when they're hitting 40 degrees above your average high.
Yeah, it's a cheap shot at the French system. Am I not allowed at least the occasional snide cheap shot?
OK.
No, because they're indistinguishable from your serious ones.

Actually, there is a genuine problem with overutilization in France. They have weak cost controls.
I'd have to look up the details, or maybe Mazzyx knows.
I don't have numbers off the top of my head but the French have the highest utilization of their services of almost any country. But it doesn't mean it is a straight up negative of their system or society.
Utilization of health services is not a simple this is too much this is too little.
my sister had a cold and like everyone was going all YOU ARE SICK GO GET SOME MEDICINE
it's the common cold you french farts
What kind of self respecting Scandinavian gets a problem from a cold
She didn't!
She just stayed home not to infect everyone since she was shooting infectious projectiles every ten seconds and then reloading with lung-phlegm with a nice bout of coughing
Then I salute her, sir!
I got horrific food poisoning a few weeks ago off a bad steak pie and everyone was going "Oh, AManFromEarth's Real Name, you must go see a GP pip pip!"
Maybe it's the farm boy in me, but I thought it was pretty silly.
Hah, yeah.
Some people - narrows eyes at [chat] - would tell you to see a doctor if you were throwing up every six minutes and shitting every four.
As a kid, we took cod liver oil, because that's just what you gave kids those days.
And I took iron supplement because a checkup said that was low once.
and I took iron pills recently - tasted like rust mixed with blood - because I had half the amount of red blood cells I needed left.
That is all the nutritional supplements I have ever taken.
Have you ever been checked for anemia? Like, maybe beta thalassemia? I know it's not very common in your neck of the woods, but might be worth checking.
you know something i really miss about israel? the earnestness of the holidays. when i lived in germany (and of course now that i've lived in america for a long time) it sort of felt like all vacations or occasions were just days to be lazy or days to party. here in america, outside of military communities veterans day or independence day are largely treated with 'sort of general reverence without much meaning' and 'woo fireworks and beer' respectively.
in israel whether or not you were jewish there was a suite of holidays that had consistent themes- forgiveness, celebration, solemnity, blah blah. you got the feeling that this day was designated for X- and almost everyone in your country had the same experience as you that day.
i kinda miss that.

The french are too much. We should make a trade blockade against antiobiotics; they're going to make the next super-plague all by themselves.

Right. I just recall issues of overutilization, combined with weak controls on what might be deemed medically necessary, so doctors could order diagnostics or procedures at zero or low copay despite them not being strictly necessary, and this was identified as a driver of France's high per-capita spending (most of which is funded through taxes).
I'm a little hazy on the details. The take-away I got from what I read was that France needs to be more aggressive about requiring copays and more restrictive about denying public funding for unnecessary services.
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the 4th of July and Thanksgiving are the best holidays ever.
Good times, perfect time of year for each and they are not infected with the scourge of Christianity.
And growing up in the middle of several reservations, the 4th was total chaos every year. I am shocked that I have all my fingers. And toes. And eyes. I have been shot with so many bottle rockets.
In fact my first full beard I had to shave off in the summer after 9th grade because I lit it on fire in a fireworks accident. It was good times.
Attacked by tweeeeeeees!

So Walmart realized its stores were cheating the system to look like its inventory system was more accurate than it was.
So they are gonna change up how they check on that sort of thing. It is going to be p hilarious watching everyone scramble to figure out how not to get caught hiding shit.

Oh they didn't mysteriously vanish. I still had most of them, spread over my favourite shirt, my favourite pants and my favourite shoes.

I think if I remember had something to do with the pay by test system. The US actually has some of the same problems. Abdy, the antibiotic comment is kind of mixed. The real over use of a lot of antibiotics are in developing countries where drug companies just drop loads of pills for "charity" write offs and they get handed out by those with no training or very little training. Feral is right it is more about testing and overuse of unneeded procedures.
Best way to fix that, doctors become salaried and not payed per procedure.
A partial solution to the issue of consent:
"Consent bracelets" made available to anyone who wants one. If you're wearing the bracelet, it's legally recognized evidence of your consent or nonconsent to sexual contact. It has 3 states: Nonconsenting (the default), Consenting, and Nonconsenting Emergency.
Only the owner of the bracelet can change the status or remove the bracelet without triggering an alarm. It could be designed to look like a watch, or jewelery, or simply a wristband, as long as it's identifiable as a consent bracelet and its status is readily visible to other people and status changes are accompanied by visual and audio signals.
The status of the bracelet is logged both within the bracelet and automatically reported to an external server. There must be multiple ways for the owner of the bracelet to instantly change the status to Nonconsenting or Nonconsenting Emergency (voice command, button, etc.) If Nonconsenting Emergency is triggered, the bracelet opens a line to emergency services and begins recording audio.
It should be simple enough to switch to Consenting that people aren't deterred from wearing the bracelet, but complex enough that it's difficult to do while intoxicated. Maybe a thumbprint along with a spoken password checked by voice recognition.
Obviously, it's not a perfect solution. Most people wouldn't wear the bracelets, and they would probably be expensive to make. Loud music might make it difficult to switch to Consenting. It wouldn't really solve the problem of people being pressured into consenting, and of course it couldn't prove that sexual contact actually took place. But it would be a simple, relatively painless way to provide time-stamped documentation of consent and avoid genuine miscommunications. And Nonconsenting Emergency would be pretty handy in a lot of situations where someone can't dial 911.

We don't have the "forgiveness or solemnity" theme thing - sounds pretty gay
but earnest holidays? Sure.
I mean, Christmas is one. Christmas is a great holiday. Everyone is with their family, eating vast amounts of great food, wearing their finest, etc. etc. You can't say christmas isn't great.
and I really do like new year's as a companion piece - new year's is about friends, for me personally anyway, and I've had wonderful new years eves last couple of years.
We have 17th of may which is our 4th of july, sort of, except not celebrated in remotely the same way. Anyway, there too you know everyone is having almost the same experience that day.
St Hans eve is also a nice one. theme is... summer, basically. You light a big ol' pagan bonfire and you probably have a barbeque with friends and neighbours and the kids get to stay up way late until the sun goes down
oh and easter - people are going skiing, watching the easter quiz and watching easter crime shows.
Alright [chat], when I was in San Francisco this month I stopped in at the wok shop and got their highest recommended wok. I'm about to try it for the first time.

things that are p nice about our national holiday:
very non-military - people's parades and children's parades are the thing. There are no military ones. HM the King's Guard performs and the military bands play but that's just festivity.
The royal family goes out onto the balcony and waves to the passing parades, but the closest the political leadership of the country gets to it is that the parliamentary president - an administrative position usually given to old politicians - gets to wave from the storting and that's it.

yeah exactly. Hence why every parent shoved spoonfuls of it down their children's throats.
also to clarify: the two cases of taking iron were not related. Once was, who knows, as a kid, and the other was just now because most of my blood escaped my body through several leaks.

No, I said "people killed and financially ruined"
As in, they are not the same thing so need to be stated as two separate Bad Things.
edit: though, thanks to the efforts of the Republican Party over the last 30 years, the two are constantly being edged closer and closer together.

Come on man, being financially ruined is basically being dead. Good luck existing with no money. It'll be great.
