not at all. Give me a minute and I'll post some links to the process that I am learning right now. The key is, after you look at things like loomis, or the reilly method, or bridgman, hogarth, to really make it stick in your brain, dont just copy the drawings the books teach, apply it to photography or real life drawing sessions over and over. And if you dont have a teacher to tell you when you are going wrong, your work ethic and double checking the next day if something doesnt really good is all you have.
So this is character sketch #25, 1/4 of the way through my initial goal, and folder titled "1-100"
Yeah, I've been conceptualizing it a lot recently, trying to put all the shapes where they need to be. I'm starting to get it to the point where I almost feel competent with basic figures in basic poses.
I'm doing something I saw on a Ctrl+Paint video called Draw 100, where I draw 100 of something that I find hard or scary. It's proving quite helpful.
Re: your elf man, I love it. He has quite a bit of natural character to him. I like how his outfit is loaded with pockets. Just pockets everywhere. But not like to a comical point like a Rob Liefeld character. These ones look functional and fit the design of a traveler.

I clicked this thread because i was expecting some new beavotron stuff too. (only glanced at the topic).
But what i found was far from disappointing; nice work! Inspiring anatomy studies and, as someone already pointed out, great values on those character pieces.

I finally got some sleep and finished all my mid terms. Best friends of artist is definitely coffee, cereal and no sleep. Now I'm caught up on it. And thought I would post those links that helped me the most when I was starting out a couple years ago, and before I started buying all the books that people said to buy and eventually went to art school. I saved all of these images into a file for myself and I recommend others do the same because it is not as distracting as to have to keep looking for them.
Some of these are from my teacher, Ron Lemen, and others.
Two sites that are really coming off the ground for the digital genre. Free and some premium stuff.
And my absolute favorite teacher..Marshall Vandruff. If you ever take a class at theartdepartment.org which you can do part time, take composition 1 and 2, and perspective and anatomy lab with marshall. Your life will be richer in spirit and love. I would work for this man for free. He taught Vance Kovacs and Justin Sweet and Chris Applehans. He brings what feels like hundreds of years of knowledge to your table for you digest. My mind is blown every class, every mystery is revealed.
His website recommends all the books that you could ever need, and no more wondering which books to buy at barnes&noble or on amazon.
And there are tons of DVD's and downloads across the internet that you can find for specific things that you want to learn.
At first it is a little overwhelming. But you just gotta look at 1 a day, or 2 at and try it, or not, and stay on your own studies and portfolio building, and remember what your own intentions are vs. what other people are doing. It took me a long time to realize that professionals are doing things the way they taught themselves, from their influences and studies, and its not how I have to do anything if I don't want to.
The thing is, internalizing something from tutorials or techniques can help you and hinder you. Because some people get stuck and say, nope I'm at this step and I have to do this next and there is nothing else to do about it because that's what I learned in this tutorial. When the fact is the artist who may have made the tutorial has probably tweaked their technique since they posted it, or wrote their book, or whatever, and may not do things that way anymore. So take just about everything with a grain of salt, and trust yourself to make your own decisions towards the things that you like and your own tastes. Otherwise you will start hearing people say, "oh his art looks just like so'n'so's works".
I've had two teachers who are deep in the biz tell me different things about the exact same elements in my paintings. The fact is they have different tastes. Its kind of funny, some tutorials will have disclaimers saying..."take what you want and leave the rest, I am not art god or anything, and I suck."
So here's some damn art. Some is midterms some is rendering assignments in figure for digital medium. That was one of the best lessons I've ever got in my life. I think I just shot forward a bit in my learning.

These are color counterchange studies. Just a color overlay layer in PS over some master works. Color counterchanges and value counterchanges have completely changed the way I do thumbnails and composition. I am just so excited that I get this now. Thanks to Marshall Vandruff.
