God damn, the actor playing Joffrey must have taken "How to be a BIGGER dick" lessons. . .

The show seems a lot more confident, and they had their bearings at the end of last season. This can only mean good things.

Speaking of spoilers, I watched "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" movie before I was done with the 2nd book... only to find out that the first movie totally fucking spoils the living shit out of the second book in a random unnecessary dialogue moment.

But anyway holy shit I love Game of Thrones. Great start to the season.

I think that was maybe a little diffuse (as in Tyrion, Robb, Joffrey, Cersei, and Littlefinger got multiple scenes, but everyone else was one and done, basically), but stellar work in what was shown.
And Cersei/Joffrey continue to be some classy motherfuckers. Let's go baby murdering y'all! Yeeehaw.

Tyrion is actually a classy motherfucker, which is nice.

I wonder if Dinklage will be presenting himself as a lead (into the Cranston buzzsaw with ye) since he is billed first now. Be hard to see him loing supporting though. In our one scene out there, I really liked what the Dragonstone group did. Strong work from those three.

And good lord, they have found some beautiful places. From the previews I knew the beyond the wall shots would be gorgeous, but wow Iceland. Way to be New Zealand like.

I'll put Dinklage toe-to-toe with Cranston any day of the week.

Dude has been doing some downright amazing things on this show.

Good premiere. Needed to be about...ten hours longer.

Gritty show about drugs and crime in the real world will always beat fantasy, all things being equal. Call it the Atomic Ross effect. :P

Though on a more serious note, airtime alone makes it hard. I never watched Breaking Bad (that kind of story just doesn't appeal to me, no matter how brilliantly it's done), but my long standing assumption has been that Cranston is in like 2/3 of the show or more? And here Dinklage was in maybe 1/6 of that episode and similar amounts last year?

am i the only one who thought that- at least when dealing with cersei- he sounded a lot less petulant this season? he still sounded like a petulant child when he was impotently trying to terrorize sansa. but when he had that argument with cersei in the throne room, pre-slap, he actually sounded... like an adult. an asshole, sure, and still incompetent- but no longer like a tiny child.

maybe they're trying to adjust his voice a little bit with the actor aging. but i thought it was a nice touch, that he feels like he's starting to segue from an asshole child king to an asshole king.

I think you're probably right, although on the other hand they're probably getting a bit bored of voting for Cranston by now. But as long as he at least gets a nomination I'll be pretty happy.

The other nomination that would be pretty well earned is a best supporting actor nod for Jack Gleeson as Joffrey. He so perfectly embodies this terrible king, he's simultaneously an idiot and yet a tremendously threatening presence who affects every plotline in King's Landing.

Loved that episode. Stannis, Melisandre, and Davos were spot on, plus Dany and Joffrey felt appropriately "aged" in the short period between last season and tonight.

I noticed a lot of little touches, but the one that stood out was

    RE: Melisandre
Her jewel pulsing with fire while the Maester was choking on his own blood.

Also, as others have said, the dire wolf was AWESOME. Can't wait to see Ghost.

I think diffuse was the right word... a lot of people were on screen saying a lot of stuff but not a lot actually happened. Presumably that's somewhat inescapable given that they had to re-introduce a complex world after a season break, but I nonetheless found it a little disappointing. I actually checked the time partway through the episode because it felt like it was dragging.

I felt the same way but am willing to basically completely forgive just because of the sheer amount of things going on.

I was bored and thought 'this isn't as good as last year!' but really, that's not fair. my memory of last year is mainly the second half once things got really moving. and it seems that we saw all the pieces, all the kings, and know what's to come so now things can begin to unfold.

honestly one ep to get everything set up, assuming we are in fact there, is actually pretty impressive. But it was less exciting than I was hoping for a reintroduction to that world.

Well, with a book, it's easy to drop 5 or 6 chapters on the reader to reintegrate them into the world, but when you've only got 10 episodes of television to work with, I kind of expected a lot of talky exposition and reintroduction. I forsee a less significantly expository episode for S3E1. I do hope that next week gets more into the nitty-gritty, though.

They got even more money for Season 2 but they'll never have enough to maintain the standard of quality the show is known for for 12 or 13 episodes instead of 10. Hopefully the viewership increases because they'll need a ridiculous budget for Seasons 4 and 5.

In terms of average TV, I give this ep a 9 out of 10. (An extra point could have been attained if they'd managed to really get started on the plot, as opposed to just laying the foundation; and, though I hesitate to mention them, adhering to the books in ways that would neither have cost anything extra nor affected running time in any meaningful way. I get the need for changes for the medium, and I get that some things don't translate well to the screen, but a single line here or there that adds a second or two? I'm watching HBO, aren't I?)

In terms of the series, eh, a 7.

I assume after this "set up" episode, most episodes won't contain every storyline (and some will at some point probably be combined or, knowing this show, eliminated).

I don't think this was a particularly great episode of television; but it just felt great to inhabit the world and check in with the characters. Particularly Tyrion, but a lot of the weaker characters from last season felt more interesting here, including Robb and even Dany.

Yeah, it's tough to compare the shows like that..I don't even think it's possible for GoT to have a true leading role like Breaking Bad does (well, Breaking Bad has two, really..by now I consider Aaron Paul / Jesse just as important as Cranston) just by virtue of having too damn many characters. It sucks that it'll probably miss out on leading role awards that way but it deserves dozens of awards for supporting characters, imo.

Much agreement... though I noticed Dinklage gets top billing now. Giving how heavily he's been featured in the various previews leading up to this season, I wouldn't be shocked if they're giving Dinklage enough time this year that maybe he will be considered for best actor, and not just supporting. And I'd be all for it, he's done a masterful job as Tyrion, and was absolutely on fire during the premiere.

And Cranston absolutely deserves his awards, his job in Breaking Bad is, well... fantastic. Though honestly, Aaron Paul deserves a best actor (not supporting) nod, too. And meanwhile, poor Hugh Laurie never got one, because of Cranston. Guess he still technically has one more shot, but House isn't quite the juggernaut it once was. Still, I wouldn't complain if they said "hey, it's not your fault you didn't get one yet, so fuck it, here."

"On fire" is a great way to describe his talent level. We're only one episode in, and he's already given me not only laugh-out-loud moments, but also man-this-little-dude-is-a-real-fucking-badass moments. So much love for Peter Dinklage. He's really become the star of the series.

On an unrelated note: anyone who knows me is aware that I'm viewing the series before reading the corresponding books. Season 1 got me to read GoT, and after season 2, I plan to knock out Clash of Kings. All my friends have told me I'm in for a real treat having never read the books, but they've also warned me not to get too attached to any of the characters. I have exactly no idea what's going to ultimately become of Tyrion, but the fact that I'm so interested in the character has me worried. Especially if season 1 was any indicator...D:

Basically, the tagline for the entire intellectual property should be "You know that character you really like? Dead."

Oh, also (spoilers re: S2Ep.1, specifically the scenes in the bordello)
BAM. Bouncing titties and loud moaning. A short while later, BAM. Hand me that infant so I can murder it.

I actually said out loud, "Well this certainly is an appropriate follow-up to season 1."

God I love gritty medieval fantasy.

The thing is, as much as it would be nice to get rid of titty bouncing scenes, or the slow quiet scenes that seem to go nowhere, in order to fill it with more action or something of more significance, sometimes you need scenes that remind you you're in a world, and that not everything is on a set of train tracks. I find that when the plot is set within this world, its more satisfying and believable when we get to actually experience that world as it is for the majority of people the majority of the time, you need those little vignettes even though you could use them to squeeze in another character or more time with a 'main'.

Also can I just say how fucking AMAZING the city shots were in this episode, for the first time you really get the sense that Kings Landing is a huge city. Man backdrops like this are stuff im used to seeing in feature films, we are so lucky. Especially in sequences where its not a 'shot', but simply buildings and stuff added in the background, gives such a sense of depth, made the whole episode feel much bigger than anything in season 1.
