Heavy Metal 2006: Blood Fire Update

SideswipeSideswipe Registered User regular
edited April 2007 in Debate and/or Discourse
Thus ends the metal thread
By the treachery of mods the thread is lost
The night falls and great is the triumph of evil
The league is broken
The last vestige of hope lives in the dreamerdown
Only he troubles the dark one's mind
Only he could bring ruin to the black foe
Though the land lies down in agony and the curse lives on
A new star shall arise
And a new thread shall come, again

So 2006 has assaulted our ears with the best flood of new metal in a decade. The list of new releases is long and I am not willing to keep it updated, so here it is as of now, according to dreamerdown:

**update**
go to page 28 for new list, as it is far too large for a single post.

So would someone explain the hidden secret behind Beyond Twilights new album? or have we even figured it out yet? I dont recall coming to any conclusion as to what it might be.

I also haven't come up with anything, as after about 10 minutes of listening to the album on shuffle I turned it off, disgusted that I was listening to something on shuffle.

I was hoping someone else would figure it out. Maybe if you combine the tracks that are all parts of a series into seperate groups? Lyrics would probably help as well.

I must listen to the new Vader like once a day. I can't get enough of it. I really like the track Helleluyah (God is Dead). I liked it when I first heard it, and I liked it even more when mrleaf pointed out that it was "helleluyah."

The new Vader is a phenomenal album, I just can't get over how they manage to be so oldschool sounding but yet the drumming is just so insane, the blasting so modern....

One of the best metal records this year.

So far the high lights to me for 2006 is as follows:

    Aborym - Generator
Fucking evil, sick, twisted, crazy metal. I just can't get enough of this album. Perfect for those moods where you feel like sitting next to a burning church and... burning more churches.

    Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis
Great death metal band put an interesting spin on the whole genre and on their own sound. It has an awesome groove to it and still manages to kick the same amount of ass as anything else from 2006.

Deicide - The Stench Of Redemption
For once I can almost take Glen Benton seriously now that he has some awesome guitarists riffing away in the background.

    Kalmah - The Black Waltz
My only problem with Kalmah in the past was their vocals. But for some reason the deep growls really turned me in favor of this band. Awesome melodic death metal.

Mercenary - The Hours That Remain
Take the epicness of their past effort 11 Dreams and mix it into some soaring vocals and serious guitar work, and this album is in my 2006 best of list.

    Necrophobic - Hrimthursum
Evil. Fucking evil. I love it.

    Satariel - Hydra
Lyrically this album has some great ideas. The music is a bit lacking but it's still quite amazing for some laid back melodeath.

    Slayer - Christ Illusion
    Look at my avatar title.

    Sodom - Sodom
    There's nothing you can do
    To stop me now
    Wanted dead
    The final sacrifice
    Wanted dead
    To preserve my reign

Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
Think Alien meets City with some great guitar hooks. I don't give a fuck you fucking fuck. Hell yeah they fucking suck.

    Summoning - Oath Bound
    :?:
    :o

    Vader - Impressions In Blood
Come on how can you NOT love an album where one song's chorus is just,

    God is dead
    Dead
    Helleluyah!

Vader have come back after The Beast and made an album which I can only describe as Litany meets De Profoundis.

So there's my round up. 10 years from now I hope to look back at 2006 as my generation's version of 1986.

Jesus fucking christ there are more releases in this year than there are days so far.

    I think

    I dunno

    I'm just eyeballing it

I have no money or bandwidth for the time being and so I'm afraid I am going to be falling farther and farther behind this year, worse than I already am. :(

Yeah, as far as Beyond Twilight goes, my hypothesis is when you line it up "just right" it gives you a message to get a life. Until someone discovers something to the contrary, I won't bother trying to figure it out.

Also, no one has shown any Anata love :( I often find myself humming the riff from Downward Spiral Into Madness. If you make hardass technical death metal hummable, then you have accomplished quite a feat.

Thank god for Sirius and cable radio!

I only buy about 3 or 4 albums a year (Last year it was Clutch - Robot Hive:Exodus, Mastodon - Leviathan, CoC - In the Arms of God, and Trivium - Acendancy).

I'm gonna have to pick and choose carefully this year, especially considering I have to get the new Maiden album and improve my Opeth catelog.

Speaking of Maiden, have you guys seen the new video?

The new Maiden video is a lot like most of the other Maiden videos. They stand there and play a song, with live footage spliced in. It's alright, I guess. The song is kickass though.

I definitely had to slide A Twist in the Myth up one category. It's still not perfect, but it is rock solid and I've listened a bunch.

Paul Gilbert has a new solo album coming out sometime very soon. Bob wouldn't shut up about it. I think he said it was all instrumental shred.

Also, what's with Racer X's bass player being in the Mars Volta? Gaaaaaaaay.

I can't speak for the 'general', since I am but one person.

It's not nearly the trainwreck it could have been. Several of the non-promo tracks are decent, and I like them a lot more than the advance tracks. Still, even the thrashiest tunes on there are not nearly as exciting as their 80s run. Also there is a lot of very lazy 0-1-0-1 fret riffing in some of the breakdowns. I thought God Hates Us All had some better material overall.
