I'm still bummed about Terriers. Great show.

One funny thing about Terriers is that the final episode introduced a well-dressed businessman behind the ongoing plot of the season that (probably) would have had something do with future episodes...played by Neal McDonough. Guy has got his niche.

I really hope next season is about Detroit and Miami.

You know, I've refused to watch the last episode specifically because I didn't want to be left with an unresolved cliff hanger related to that giant real estate scheme, but being able to attribute everything to Neal McDonough somehow puts a nice cap on it all in my mind.

That last episode provides closure, you should watch it. No stupid cliff-hangers.

Yeah, the final episode works great as closure.

Neal McDonough's appearance is mostly about resolving the season-long plot, while still providing a bit of "possible future threat".

Justified is the best show FX has ever produced IMO. More consistently amazing than The Shield ever was.

I never watched the Shield, so I can't speak to it, but the first 3 or 4 seasons of Rescue Me are some of the best television I've ever watched.

Justified is right up there, though, I am a huge fan of this show. It's also funny because I live in Lexington, and I have friends who are from Harlan, so there is particular relevance for me.

I sure hope Justified doesn't go down the Rescue Me route. Even The Shield (which I really should finish one day...) wasn't as depressing with the constant bombardment of tragedy striking, usually self-inflicted, right when things got not-tragic...

If Raylan loses his kid or something I will not be happy.

Rescue me went off the rails when every random attractive woman wanted to bone Denis Leary (and also the chubby Mario looking guy(. I think if they took that route it might be slightly more buyable with Olyphant.

    Future spoilers:
Graham Yost, Justified's EP, gave an interview where he said yeah, we briefly considered doing something like that, having Winona get in a car accident or whatever, but no, it's not going to happen.

    So rest assured.

Whatever was good about Rescue Me in the first 2 or 3 seasons was kinda negated by the massive levels of shit in the last 3 or 4. It still had moments, but as pointed out, it eventually became "The Grief Porn + Denis Leary Masturbatory Fantasy Hour". It's still probably worth catching those first few seasons, though.

The Shield stayed more or less good throughout it's run (aside from a few bumps along the way that most long-running shows hit), but I thought it could have been a season shorter (though that's nitpicking).

Yes, you really truly should finish The Shield.

I really hope next season is about Detroit and Miami.

If you mean that it takes place in Detroit or Miami, I don't see that happening. Kentucky is a character and putting the show anywhere else does a lot to turn it into just another cop drama.

If you mean that Detroit and Miami are suddenly more interested in the business opportunities there...yeah, that'd be okay. Although we sort of already had that this season.

I have a new theory for Tuesday's episode: Limehouse is trying to convince everyone in Harlan who is currently banking with him to either kill each other off or land themselves in prison on a Federal charge so that he can walk away with their money.

    Holy fucking shit

    Holy fucking shit

    That was amazing.
Quarles is an unstoppable demon. Until Raylan most likely takes him down in a epic standoff next week.

And Wynn Duffy losing his shit was classic as always. Blowing up the car at that moment was a hilariously stupid move though, but not so much that it reeked of plot convenience since Duffy is kind of stupid anyway.

The most interesting part of the episode for me was that Limehouse was actually following Mag's wishes when he was refusing to give the money to Dickie Bennet. I had assumed that Limehouse was just being a greedy jackass, but he was actually being (relatively) honorable.

    Yeah, that was good.

    Also, one complaint about Quarles
Him becoming a junkie kind of dimished him as a villian, if he just stayed clean through it all he would be even more intimidating.

Shut up all of you. I just downgraded my package and lost FX, so I don't get to watch this until it comes out on Amazon. I'm hoping this is tomorrow, and not next week.

However, I did take the opportunity to watch the pilot, since it was available for free. It was kinda cool looking back at how things started.

  • HeisenbergHeisenberg Registered User regular
I know that PS3 puts it up either the same night or the morning after, so Amazon is probably at the same speed.

Odd man out here it seems.
Quarles is a god damn walking plot contrivance now. Boyd leaves him with junkie whores?! Really? Shock surprise how that turned out! Then he's on fire and gets the drop on a forewarned and armed Tom at the end? Killing him would have been a surprise, this is just ho hum, who would thunk it.

At least Dickie got caught, but again, par for the course. Arlo should kill him. Maybe next week. The stuff with Limehouse and Loretta was good, but was a small part of the episode.

I was surprised that Quarles got him, but just goes to show that no one ever expects the wrist mounted pistol. I agree that leaving only his foot chained up was unbelievably stupid, and Boyd isn't stupid. Probably the first contrived plot mechanic in the entire season so far, so I can easily forgive it. I had no problem with Quarles surviving the blast and killing Tom though. Even when coked out, he's a beast.

  • XeddicusXeddicus Registered User regular
    Except:
Tom knew he was armed, though. The wrist mounted pistol was totally expected, it was already sprung. Yeah, Quarles could still win, but I didn't want him to since he should have been dead already and only wasn't due to the total cluster fuck of the opening.

The dialog throughout the episode was good too, though, while I drudge up things to cover up the Quarles mess.

I absolutely love this show, but there's no way I could say it's better than The Shield. The stories they tell are equally compelling, but the raw emotion the shield elicited in me has never come close to being at play watching Justified.

On topic for this episode, yeah, chaining up the badass mad man with nothing but an ankle bracelet was laughably silly.

The Shield is forever tarnished to me because of the horrible contrived bullshit of Season 7. Season 5 was absolutely stunning though, but the show still relied way too much on "worst thing that can happen will happen even if it's totally implausible" throughout it's run.

He's reached his nadir. That's why he's become a junkie. It also allowed him to exploit the hookers who were holding him hostage. That said, Quarles will likely not be high while engaging in duels with Raylan.

I don't think Boyd was being particularly stupid...
From his point of view, Quarles isn't particularly dangerous--Boyd doesn't know about his secret gun, or his secret torture-and-murder parties with rentboys. He knows that he already outsmarted Quarles by invalidating the sheriff's election. To him, Quarles hasn't seemed particularly threatening since the conversation they had in Boyd's bar, and since then Boyd hasn't suffered at all. This is why when Wynn is like "Would you mind just killing him?" Boyd is like, "He's naked and chained to a wall, he'll be fine."

Boyd also doesn't have the muscle to post a guy to keep watch over him; the lack of strong bodies in his organization has been a running theme all season.

if he was already naked and chained before boyd left, he'd know about the gun
also keeping a shotgun in the trailer and allowing the ho's to play with his pistol is the height of stupidity

Boyd's group never had much muscle to begin with. Without Devil around to be the resident grunt he has to rely on himself for anything involving fighting. His brother's ok but only as back-up. He's also much better being a mastermind re: blowing up his house in that trap for Mag's thugs, for example. Arlo's too old for fire-fights. Ava's a non-factor unless she up's her game into becoming a badass real soon.

I'm pretty sure he left before they finished stripping Quarles (who at the time was unconscious, so no harm in leaving him), because when Boyd and Quarles had their showdown Quarles says "As you can see I'm unarmed" and Boyd's response is not "Yes you are, you have a gun up your sleeve" but "As you can see, I'm not."

Also, remember that Boyd/Ava just took over the brothel--I'm sure he had no idea there was a shotgun in that trailer.

If anything, Boyd's real error in judgment was leaving Quarles under the care of the prostitutes, who are new members of the organization--but as I said, it's not like he had a lot of choice there. Devil's dead, Arlo's old and crazy, Johnny's in a wheelchair, and he and Ava have things to do.

Best part of this episode was Raylen
talking Dickie into pulling on him in order to shoot him. Justified.

As for the ending, I don't think Quarles
was the one that shot Tom. Tom had him dead to rights, no way does get the shot off without Tom plugging him. I think Boyd shot Tom and took Quarles to see the mobster's son and earn himself a quick 200k.

The fact that we didn't actually see it onscreen is a pretty good indication that it was something other than the obvious answer (ie. Quarles did it). I wouldn't be surprised if your theory or some variation on it (Wynn Duffy maybe? I can't remember how big the space between the bomb and the gunshot was) is correct.

I didn't think the gunshot you hear came from Quarles gun. It could've come from Tom's, but it sounds much louder than his little gun.

...and of course, as always, Kill Hitler.

Yeah, I would be surprised if Quarles did it, as the mechanism was already "sprung" and looked messed up - from what little we could see.
Tom seemed pretty sharp too. Though with the car fire burning, who knows.

I noticed the show didn't have one of the "next time on.." clips; where a man's hand points a handgun at one of the girls in the trailer.

Boyd's writing this season has been a little iffy. I find it hard to buy that someone that pulled off that epic election heist left a crippled guy alone to guard a squirrely guy afraid for his life and a big dude that was just plotting to put you in prison.

    Everything else was stellar.

Boyd's pretty pre-occupied with Ava so it's that not much of a stretch, especially given Arlo called him Raylan which, in addition to the whole Noble's Hollow (Hollar?) issue, would indicate that Arlo might just do something stupid.

Plus to be honest, what does Boyd care if they escape?

The second dude is either going to stay and help him get the money (by telling him what safety deposit box it's in) or he's not; there's no need to keep him at gunpoint. And Johnny is generally capable of standing (well, sitting) guard.
