I've read that the kid and his cousin were watching wrestling, not MMA.

Really the only difference is now kids are pretending to BJJ, instead of pretending to professional wrestle and paralyzing each other with choke slams. Unfortunately they're always going to be idiots and do things they shouldn't, they simply make dumb teenagers faster than you can possibly educate them all.

Personally I've always thought pro wrestling is a more dangerous influence, because in MMA you can see what happens when you DON'T tap out, whether from an arm bar or a choke, and people will usually say how they should have tapped. Whereas wrestling fans know it's fake, but often they overestimate just how fake it is, if that makes sense. Uh, to rephrase, in MMA you see the consequences, whereas in wrestling you rarely see the real consequences.

(And actually, after googling it, apparently it happened at a wrestlemania party?)

    I agree with you 100%

Pro wrestling gives kids a really warped view of what violence is, they don't learn to respect it because "hey what's the worse that could happen?"

Unfortunately the knee jerk brigade might not agree. And when there are thousands and thousands of competitors around the country who just need protecting from this dangerous sport? Well...

So here's a fight from earlier this evening on Bellator. Chris Horodecki gets MAULED.

PAFC Top 10 Finisher in Seasons 1 and 3. 2nd in Seasons 4 and 5. Final 4 in Season 6.

Horodecki will always look like he's an extremely muscular 12 year old.

In other Bellator news, Ben Askren completely dominated Lima in their fight and the Canadians booed a lot. Askren then insulted the Canadians and they cheered for him.

    It was weird.

That was some damn nice power, especially for a featherweight. It's always nice to see someone getting punished for dropping their shoulders when they throw, and Horodecki was pretty blatantly leaning out over his strikes.

At least Askren is always in motion.

He's either posturing up to swat with pillowhands, or he's passing and rolling and etc etc.

Fitch just kinda lays on top.

I still enjoy watching Askren. Fuck the haters.

Gentlemen, I hope you are all aware that a free show is starting in ~30 minutes on YouTube.

Super Fight League 2, headlined by the silly (but fun) matchup between Neil Grove and Todd Duffee.

Minowaman is fighting too, I think.

    Anyway:

All WWE PPVs have a video documenting how you can hurt yourself wrestling near the start of them.

It doesn't really matter because kids are always going to want to fight, and either way is dangerous without proper training.

    SFL2 Results!

Kelly vs Healy -> Healy grinds the shit out of Kelly. Resounding meh.

"After this fight, we have the second one" Haha. Thanks announcer, guy.

Gavali mentioned that he wanted a girlfriend last time he fought.

Daguzan vs Gavali -> Daguzan cheats immediately and stops a takedown with a fencegrab. Herb Dean yells at him. This fight is sloppier, but more fun. Daguzan is fencegrabbing and shortsgrabbing up a storm. Baroni makes a 69 joke while they're in North South psoition. Daguzan elbows the back of Gavali's head. Damn. These guys are so gassed. Sloppy sub attempts and sweaty wrestling is the name of the game for round 3. Daguzan cheats his way to the decision win.

They refer to their ring as the "O-Zone".

Kandare vs. Ismael -> Crazy pace so far. Kandare gets a huge Rampage slam on Ismael's head! Kandare nearly gets a kimura! Kandre gets the mount and forces Ismael to tap to strikes. Exciting fight.

"That was fast!" Love this announcer.

Minowaman vs Shlemenko -> Minowaman comes to the ring is his cape. I'm afraid Shlemenko is going to murder him. WAR Minowman! Shlemenko going crazy with spinning backfists and kicks! Minowa gets hardcore rocked by a crazy knee! The ref doesn't stop it!! Minowa slides into a desperation leglock! Shlemenko sneaks out of it and the ref tells Minowa to stand up. Minowa is clutching his ribs and not standing up. Fight ends due to injury/TKO. :(

Shlemenko grabs the mic from Baroni!! “Hello India. Hector... I kill you” Ahahah

"Super Fight League! The fights are real and raw. The blood is for all to see!" Dis announcer.

Rathnaweera works in an office? Hm.

Kumar vs. Rathnaweera -> Rath immediately eats a kick and then slams Kumar, but Kumar ends up on top! Whee. Kumar almost gets an americana! Haha, Baroni calls it an "Indiana". Some great catch wrestling on display. Rath is mounted, but is so scrambly that Kumar can't capitalize. Fun round. Groundwork starts off round 2 and Kumar gets the RNC.

Senanayake is a weightlifter and Sanhi's parents are Bollywood stars. Hah. Both making their pro debut.

Sanhi vs. Senanayake -> Ricky fucking flies across the ring for the takedown. Sanhi is looking for a darce choke. Sena repeatedly kneeing Sanhi in the dick. Oof. Crazy knees and GnP by Sanhi. Suplex! Sanhi GnPs his way to victory. Exciting fight.

    "Hellooooooo" I. Love. This. Guy.

    Ladies time to shine.

Buck took the fight on 1 week notice. D:

Schneider is a chef, astrophysicist, and trains with Gil Melendez and Jake Shields.

Schneider vs. Buck -> Fastpaced stand up so far. Big takedown by Schneider. And lazy ground and pound. Boooring. Meh round. Immediate takedown by Schneider in round 2. Looks to be more of the same. Maaaan. Schneider has a 1-3 record, I think she is just trying to ride out an easy decision to improve that. I spoke too soon, as Schneider cuts Buck's face open and gets the TKO.

    Oh no. Terrible interviews time.

And now one of the owners went over to interview some actors sitting cageside. Ahhh

    Oh good, it's over.

Grove looks pudgy. Duffee looks huge as ever.

Grove vs. Duffee -> Aaaaaand Duffee KOs Grove about 20 seconds in. Was as surprising as Sapp vs Thompson.

Duffee asks to fight on the next SFL card. Wants to fight a lot in 2012. I'm sur they will be happy to feed him more washed-up cans.

    Maybe Sylvia/Duffee could be fun.

Anyway, decent card. You guys should watch it. Especially for this guy:

Hendo is game for anyone with a belt it seems.

I can see him now, hearing that Condit needs a fight, sat in the sauna wrapped in foil tweeting Dana that he is game. God help him if Aldo announced he is up for it, Hendo would have to cut off his legs.

    RE: Chokes

Properly applied blood choke = 4-7 seconds loss of consciousness, 30-60 seconds death

Properly applied air choke = 20-45 seconds loss of consciousness, 2-3 minutes death

If you guys want to get cheap and good MMA gear, you know mmahq and bjjhq are where it's at.

But if you want REALLY cheap (and slightly shitty) UFC and TAPOUT gear, I think SEARS stores are clearancing their MMA equipment. Here's a sample of what I saw:
    10-12oz Heavy Bag Gloves $8
TapOut MMA training gloves/Hybrid training gloves/Vale Tudo training gloves $6
    TapOut shin guards $8
    TapOut headgear $12
    Thai pads $13
    Focus mitts $6
UFC cup (Kongo disapproved) + compression shorts $6
    Hand wraps (2 pack 70") $3

Edit note: Of course, Your Mileage May Vary on clearance deals. Some places may have it on clearance, some not. Some places may have it cheaper, or more expensive, or not at all! Happy hunting.

As for quality, these appear to be rebranded Century gear, which is average at best.

    A Very Special B:L PSA...

Recently, there has been a BJJ tragedy. A 14 year old kid was horsing around with his older cousin, and put him in a rear naked choke. Unfortunately with no training or education, neither of them knew the ramifications and dangers of such a move. The kid held the choke for 30-40 seconds, and only let go when bystanders told him that his cousin was turning blue. An ambulance was called, but the cousin could not be rescucitated. He died.

The UFC does not do a good job of educating their fans. That is why it is up to the educated to spread the word, to prevent future tragedies like this from happening.

I know your just beeling, but every report i've found for this talks specifically about this being them re-enacting wrestling. Also I've noticed that you frequently post links to sites that sell equipment that can be worn by people who can hurt people, I'd ask you put a disclaimer on any such links in the future. You never know when someone might see a great price on a Korean Zombie shirt and then go choke someone to death.

I believe you're mistaken. They may have been watching wrestling, but it's unclear whether they were re-enacting wrestling or MMA, and that's besides the point as they used a BJJ technique. The whole point of this is about what can be done to prevent tragedies like this in the future. We cannot let the UFC off the hook and just wait until the next BJJ tragedy while they're watching UFC before actions should be taken and criticisms levied.

To give you an example of the difference in steps taken to prevent such tragedies, here is a compilation of some of WWE's pre-show warnings:

And in comparison, here are the UFC's pre-show warnings:

This is a real tragedy and one shouldn't exploit it to soapbox and protect the UFC's reputation. What one should do is ask them to do more. Thankfully the Gracies knew the gravity of this situation and provided an excellent warning video, which hopefully spreads and raises awareness. Awareness is the issue here, as stated in the Gracie video, as that whole tragic event could have been prevented by having just one aware person around.

As for your facetiousKana comment about links to safety gear needing safety warnings... that's redundant. That's the whole point of safety gear, to protect against injuries and accidents. It's like saying safety goggles need warnings that they do nothingthe user is about to engage in activities that could injure their eyes... or bicycle or motorcycle helmets needing warnings that they could fall and injure their heads. I'm sure the people who BUY safety gear already know this, and are buying the gear specifically to prevent this. Besides, the item descriptions themselves have the safety warning you requested 8->
A link to show the safety warning and to give you an idea of the original price: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_SPM3487202502P?prdNo=18

The posting of sales on safety equipment is itself a warning against practicing martial arts or sparring without it. There are still deplorable people out there who spar people smaller than themselves without any safety equipment and feel proud when they bloody their opponent's nose. I'm hoping that the posting of sale items would encourage people to train smart and train safe.
