Is it good news or bad news when after two CT scans the result is "undiagnosed" and the doctor seems entirely fine and blasé about this situation?
The first CT scan was to map blood vessels and stuff for transplant, they just noticed swollen lymph nodes and got me back in for a second one to see if lymph nodes in more reachable locations were swollen too, they were not, so no biopsy.

I am sitting here with a canister of cipro that is slowly infusing into my body.

Antibiotics: They work! But only through the IV. And nobody knows why.

If I had to guess I'd say that your digestive system has said "fuck you I have enough problems" and refused to absorb it that way. My body does that with certain things I need to take since part of my intestine is gone. This way it's going right to your blood. IANAD though.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Yeah but in the first one your blood was full of DYE, so

I don't suppose anyone here has run-ins with sleep apnea? I've noticed when dozing that the whole breathing thing'll stop for a half second--kinda like a hiccup, only more painful. Once it happened while I was sleeping, at like 2 AM, and woke me up--that was thoroughly weird.

Anyway I'm thinking of asking the doc to refer me for a sleep study. I'm told the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a CPAP machine worn during sleep; what I can't figure out from the net is, is this something I'd be wearing the rest of my life, or do I eventually get 'better'?

Depends on the root cause of your sleep apnea, and how severe it is.

Some people will be fine if they can train/learn to sleep in a different position (usually on the front).

For many people the issue is weight related, and losing weight can cause the apnea to disappear.

Mine is caused by me having a really small throat... Not much I can do about that, but then my apnea is mild enough that I don't function too badly without the CPAP, it just helps me get a better night's sleep, that's all.

They know for sure it's obstructive? Central sleep apnea exists as well, in which case I'm told adjusting your breathing/sleeping habits won't help much. I get cases of sleep apnea mixed with sleep paralysis, and the most the doctor can tell me is to reduce my stress as best I can.

Which actually works for me (most of the time)

    @Ledneh

I've had experience with sleep apnea. I finally had it diagnosed my senior year of college, when I was literally falling asleep during class sometimes. I never noticed actually stopping breathing, but my girlfriend at the time did.

Are you overly tired? When you wake up, do you feel rested? There are different levels of sleep apena.

So I went for a sleep study and found out I was micro-waking a couple of hundred times at night. I had a CPAD machine, which is basically a device you wear over your nose and mouth that constantly pushes air to keep your airways open.

Eventually I went on a fitness kick and lost a bunch of weight. After that I found that I didn't need the CPAP anymore!

Did you all know that hospitals have secret bathrooms that only the staff know about?

Of course they would want to hide the good bathrooms.

So I had my sleep study on Saturday. It was supposed to be a split evening, where I go to sleep at 11PM or so, and if I've had some number of sleep arousals (apnea, etc) in the next three hours he'd wake me up and we'd start CPAP titration right away

Turns out with three dozen wires and a couple breathing straps stuck on me I didn't get to sleep until 2:30 AM, and then only for two hours, so now I have to schedule a talk with the doctor THEN another study for titration

And each one requires a referral because I am retarded and took the HMO, and Aetna sucks

The worst part is, they're definite that I need the CPAP because in those two hours of sleep my blood oxygen was crap and my windpipe kept constricting (but not quite closing), but rules are rules

    :(

I seem to be OK right now. When the cap falls off, I have zero protection against shit in the environment. There is a risk of major infection since the PICC line leads right to the heart.

My Mum went into hospital two weeks ago for a minor pain in her side and we have since learned she has Stage IV cancer with tumors pretty much all over her body. The doctors are still trying to track down the primary, but it's most likely in her lung. If she lives another two years she'll be beating the odds.

Munkus and Stale I am pleased to no end to see you both swimming up waterfalls over and over. It gives me hope that maybe she can do the same.

Condolences to you and your mother, Butler, wish I could offer more than that :(

Had a discussion with the sleep doc on Monday, talking about the results of my sleep study the previous week (as it turns out, sleeping in an unfamiliar place on a pullout bed with three dozen wires strapped to you is very hard!)

The results were kind of interesting. He told me that 'severe obstructive sleep apnea' is considered to be 25-30+ apnea events ('arousals') per hour over the course of your sleep time. Turns out I averaged about 40, so I was snapping out of deep sleep almost once every minute and a half :o

So I'm on the slate for a CPAP machine in the next week or two, for either the rest of my life or (if I'm lucky) when I stop being a fatarse. I'm sort of curious and impatient to find out how well it works; the doctor just stopped short of saying it would be a lifechanger for me considering how bad my sleep quality appeared to be!
