The Leviathan will, in my brain, be FFF until someones says otherwise. If Mandarin exists I'm assuming he gets the rings from the dragon limping away after the battle.

DRAGON: *cough* *cough* *cough* (turns to face a MAN in exotic attire, standing atop a large boulder. The MAN'S long scarf flutters impressively from the wind at his back.)
MAN: (wordlessly reaches out with an outstretched hand)
DRAGON: (resigned, in the voice of Jack Palance) Sure, kid, why not. I'm too old for this shit.
Close up of MAN's hand. RINGS gleam in his hand, the same colour as the DRAGON. The MAN clenches his hand into a fist over the rings, and somehow they're already on his fingers. He looks up. The DRAGON has disappeared.

The list of good movies so far:
- John Carter
- Friends with Kids
- 21 Jump Street
- Mirror, Mirror
- Cabin in the Woods
I hate that you liked John Carter.
I can't even give a shakedown of what I didn't like because I found it so laughably bad from nearly the start. I can accept that it was just so not my thing that basically I shouldn't bother talking about it but I ... well this is my last post about it :P
I know you've gone over what you liked so I'm not trying to prompt for an explanation or anything.
What's the great Millenial movie romance, then? Legitimately great, I mean, not just Twilight or one of those Nicolas Sparks things.
Eternal Sunshine or 500 Days of Summer. (I lean towards 500 Days, personally, mostly because I've lived that movie at least twice.)

I realize it doesn't matter for the purpose of this discussion but it's funny that eternal sunshine keeps popping up considering the actual age of the two leads in the film.
not saying it's not a valid answer at all just an observation

...is great, but doesn't really work for this, I think. I do truly love that movie, though.
Hell, Before Sunrise & Before Sunset, taken in concert, should probably be in contention if we're willing to ignore that Before Sunrise came out in friggin' 1995.
Just how does someone get an internship at a top secret, "save the earth" conspiratorial research facility? Does it give college credit? What does the report turned into the school look like?

In regards to that Cabin spoiler, insanely curious to see "Kevin"
i'm going to have to rewatch that frame by frame... I couldn't spot anyone like that but if I was to guess, i'd say he'd have a painball mask?...
Kevin Spoilers (my thoughts on it at least)
Kevin was the robot scorpion with the sawblade tail
Also I had to describe this to someone today, and my quote was as follows... "CitW is like The Sixth Sense... Go see it without looking it up online first, because it only works once, but it works really, really well..."

Cool little easter Egg from Cabin that I didn't spot myself, but have shamelessly lifted from tvtropes:
During "The Carnage", one video clip shows the woman from Serenity shooting herself before being taken by Reavers. And you wouldn't know it was from somewhere else.
Oh holy crap. I remember that part and it registered as familiar. That's amazing
There's another scene where
The guy who played Topher on Dollhouse says something like "We're not who we are..." or something along those lines, but it's his exact same quote from Dollhouse in one of the episodes.
I had to describe this to someone today, and my quote was as follows... "CitW is like The Sixth Sense... Go see it without looking it up online first, because it only works once, but it works really, really well..."
Really?
The Sixth Sense had a twist at the end that completely changed your perspective on the story and made you re-evaulate everything else you had seen up until that point. The big perspective changer in Cabin in the Woods is given away in the trailer and set up in the first few minutes of the movie. Yeah you'd be surprised if you went in expecting a standard horror film but it's closer to the 'reveal' that Neo lives in a simulation than any Shyamalan-style tricks.
Yeah if I was to describe it, i'd say it's like: if Rubber was made for a general audience.
It's kind of disappointing that Cabin didn't play with the role of the audience more. Like a cut away to a theater of Elder gods wanting their money back.
Yeah if I was to describe it, i'd say it's like: if Rubber was made for a general audience.
Yeah, it's hard to describe. Some people say it's like Funny Games except
Funny Games seems to simply be condemning of the genre while this explains why it exists, why we need it, why it's bad, and celebrates it all the same time.
It also didn't come from a vacuum. We've had a spate of fairly
self-reflective
horror in the past few years with films like Trick 'r Treat and even Drag Me To Hell.
This film just might be the apotheosis of meta, however.
Saw The Raid tonight, some CRAZY action if you're a martial arts fan it's worth seeing. It's one of those ones where you see the stunts and wince because wires, padding, whatever, there's no way filming it didn't hurt like hell.
Pretty sure the US could never make that sort of thing because no one would insure the stunts.
There is some insane action coming from places like Indonesia and Thailand these days, because their stuntpeople are fucking nuts. Go check out Chocolate (from the producers of Ong Bak and The Protector). Then check out the "making of" videos. 75% of the time is spent showing the painful injuries, some life-altering, that the stunt people recieve. Except, instead of Tony Jaa, it's a skinny young woman taking most of the hits. It's like watching the out-takes of a Jackie Chan movie, but even more cringe-inducing.

I definitely agree that it's best enjoyed the first time totally un-spoiled, but I couldn't disagree more about it only working once. I'm hoping to get back and see it in theaters again, and then will anxiously await the blu-ray release, and enjoy it again at that point. It's just such a horrifically fun movie with so many little details, I see a lot of re-watch value.
Incidentally, any of you read Sluggy Freelance? This whole movie struck me as being very much like some of the older arcs in that webcomic. Especially the "speaker phone" conversation with Mordecai; classic Sluggy that wasn't Sluggy.

Yeah, I didn't actually mean it's like the Sixth Sense in genre aspects or deeper meaning, I just meant that these days a lot of people like to go online and read 40 reviews and 10 kotaku articles about a flick before they see it and watch 10 special clips and that will ruin this movie for you. That's not really something we had even as little as 10 years ago.
Also yeah, I loved the movie so I'll get the blu ray with all the whedon inspired special features, but if you get spoiled early on the movie is useless other than for popcorn fun. That's why I said it only works once.
Edit: I just used the whole T6S analogy because of the running "Bruce Willis is a Ghost the Whole Time" spoiler joke. If you actually told someone that who hadn't seen the movie, or described it any way other than "it's a fantastic supernatural thriller" like you would say "it's a great Cabin In The Woods horror movie" for this one, it would be ruined.
Also I had to describe this to someone today, and my quote was as follows... "CitW is like The Sixth Sense... Go see it without looking it up online first, because it only works once, but it works really, really well..."

This must be why I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as others, because even with minimal spoilers I figured out the "twist" in the first 15 minutes.
That said, looking at all the "whiteboard" spoilers does make me remember the parts of the movie I did love. I just don't think the movie lived up to the potential of it's concept. I do expect that the next time I see it I'll enjoy it a bit more.
The protagonists were incredibly boring and we spent too much time watching them and not enough time in the facility. I think they should have found the facility much, much earlier and spent a lot more time there while more of them were still alive.

I got what you meant and you're right. The spoiler culture today is insane. Arguably, a lot of it stems from the fact that most major studio films today are straight up shit so people want to know whether something is worth the money; I'd also argue some of it is clique-ishness: that idea of knowing something cool and being able to share it first.
I was only pointing out that this film doesn't cheat the audience to do what it does while The Sixth Sense is deceptive because of editing trickery and not the writing.
I saw Sleeping Beauty last night. I admit, part of the interest was to see Emily Browning starkers, but it turned out to be an interesting movie on a few levels. Not great, or a game changer or anything, but interesting.
I found it weird that Lucy had money problems... she had two regular jobs and hooked on the side. Were we meant to believe that she was just really bad with her money, like when she just literally burned a c-note? Her drug habit seemed to be supplied by other people; we never see her buying, though she did have a stash of her own weed.
I have to wonder if there's an extended version of the movie where she "sleeps with" every member of that dinner party from her first job with the weird escort service. That seemed to be the direction it was going. Movie felt longer than just over 100 minutes.
Has anyone else seen (or even heard of) Detention, which came out last weekend?
I would never have heard of it if I didn't know somebody involved in its production, but I am so glad I saw it. It is great. It's the cultiest fucking thing on earth, it probably won't be in theaters much longer, but it is just exuberant and hilarious. I expect it will get a lot of love if it can get some word of mouth.
Contains (from least strange to most strange):
- Saturday detention
- a kid with a tv strapped to his hand
- 1992 nostalgia
- a time traveling bear
- planet Starclaw
- a furious Canadian

I don't even know that describing it as a "twist" is necessarily accurate. Like you say, what's going on isn't that hard to put together early on; it's designed to gradually reveal details of the setup over the course of the story rather than some monumental "twist ending". Personally, I enjoyed that structure, but maybe it isn't for everyone.

My fun with the movie was in not having any idea where they were going with it all. I'm glad I went in knowing nothing, but I expect the movie to be even more fun watching it a second time and enjoying all the craziness that unfolds.

That's what confuses me about the comparison to Sixth Sense.
Either it really is a twist and I'm too "smart" for my own good, it's a poorly executed twist, or it isn't a twist, which (IMO) wastes the premise.
I would describe it more as "world discovery" than a twist. It doesn't try to mislead you about what's going on, there's no sudden epiphany for the audience; it just takes its time rolling out exactly how the system works. Which I think is exactly the right way to treat this sort of premise.
