One question about near gifts. When I hit download, do I have the gifts, or do I need to launch the game before the time limit runs out AFTER I download the gift to actually get it?
If you have 60 MB on your PlayStation Vita memory card, you've got enough room for the free Skype app that arrives on the handheld today in North America (April 25th in the EU). Skype on the PlayStation Vita will pack both voice and video calling options, run on 3G as well as WiFi, and use both of the PlayStation Vita's cameras. Also interesting, if you leave the Skype app running in the background of your Vita, notifications of incoming calls and chats will pop up while you use other Vita programs.
Sadly, you cannot take a call, go back to your game of choice and continue chatting. That's a feature of the Vita's built-in Party App, but PlayStation Director of Hardware Marketing John Koller doesn't see one being better than the other.
Did discover that Music Unlimited has a Offline mode option where you can download channels & music ahead of time, though. Makes it actually slightly useful for me.
And there *is* a option for it to use mobile networks. Dunno how much bandwidth it's going to use, but probably more useful if you've got a Unlimited plan for your devices.

D1 is just a better game all round than 2 or 3 - I haven't played 4 yet. I've 'completed' it (in the Uber Prinny Baal sense - not the insanely masochistic item world completionist sense) 3 times over on PS2 and PSP yet had to force myself to complete the basic storylines of 2 and 3.
I'd say D1 has a better cast and story, but at the same time calling it an all around better game seems incredibly backward with all of the improvements they made to the series as it went on.
I'd say every game is, at the very least, mechanically superior to the previous one. (And the PSP versions tend to improve upon the originals as well by incorporating mechanics from the most current game in the series.)

I'm 90% sure you have to launch the game before it runs out. Which is fine when you've got a downloadable title but kinda annoying when it's a game card and you've got to go through the hassle of inserting it.
Edit: Oh and the "!" on top of the gifts icon seems to an indication of whether you've redeemed it or not.
Skype is in the Vita store for me, so I grabbed it and tried it with my wife from the other room, with her on her iPod touch. It worked about as well as you expect. No better and no worse. Good to have though.

That's about what I would expect. I just have trouble envisioning a scenario where I need to make a Skype call and only have my Vita, but not my iPhone, iPad, or laptop.
Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

Skype to skype can work if you're playing with someone though, like psv to ps3 games, where your friend is in range of a computer or something. Voice chat without requiring a vita and party chat(which was somewhat unreliable when I used it.)
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Ok, so after having my Vita less than a week, my girlfriend really wants one. Is there any real difference between the different "models"? IE, European vs Asian vs US? I figure if it's 3G, maybe (since the 3G one is locked to AT&T in the States?) but for WiFi there shouldn't be any difference, yes?
And the reason we're looking at PlayAsia is it's $50 cheaper than buying locally, minus shipping costs, and all the bundle deals are pretty crappy here.

It works perfectly for me, as I have no iThings and my chromebook does not skype as far as I know. And my wife is about to start grad school where she'll have to stay there for the weekdays, so I'll still get to see her over Skype. Or at least this is one method, I suppose.

WiFi versions are all the same EXCEPT for the X and O button use in the Japanese (and possibly another region?) systems. They are swapped and apparently can't be reversed. If this doesn't bother you then you are good to go.

I don't have any gifts in my Near right now, but I seem to remember the expiry date changing when you download the gift. I know some trades have a very short lifespan (like 3 hours after getting them) and I thought I had like a week after I hit the Download button. This is only what I recall though - I could be remembering them through hazy I<3Vita glasses.

That won't be an issue. We were just confused why they were listed as they were on PlayAsia. Thanks!
bahahahaha, "The Reveal" in Rayman: Origins. That was hilarious.
Utterly fantastic game, highly recommend it to anyone who loves platformers. Still havn't gotten all the teeth, though, gotta work on that. 8/10, still gotta get the Ruins and unlock the level for the last one (need like three more of the pink things).

I ran into a couple tough maps, so I decided to play around in the item world. Keep finding stronger items in there, and going into those item worlds. Now I'm like 15 levels higher and have ungodly powerful items for where I am in the story, and I'm thinking maybe I should play the story again, but I have a legendary Dark Rosary that would be pretty badass to level up.

Dumb Disgaea question.
When you are looking at a weapon and it has a list of stuff like, dietician 3, coach 4 or whatever, I forget the rest. What is the deal with that? Is the tutorial gonna go over that in a bit or should I find a guide somewhere?
I played a little disgaea ages ago but I do not remember much more than moving, throwing and attacking. Also the item world seemed cool.

They are called Specialists. They improve certain stats on the item. Some of those stats are hidden, like EXP and Mana boosts. If you go into item world, you can defeat or capture them and then they become unlocked. You can then move them between items, and combine them with other Specialists of the same type.

Additionally, you can tell when yo enter a floor where a specialist lives, because they will shout "CHECK!" when the floor loads and will move independently of the bad guys. You want to defeat them before the bad guys on the level do.
I wish he would have said whether or not he was able to play the game on a PS3/PSP. I'm sure it's fine, but just in case...I wanna know Sony aren't planning anything sneaky.

So my local best buy put out Mortal Kombat early, I'm totally getting it, and I hope I'm wrong about the graphics, but the box didn't inspire confidence. The entire back of the box is nothing but art work and one screenshot... of their fruit ninja mini game.

Oh, thank you. Yeah I just need to keep on truckin.
It is hard when I have xenoblade and persona 3 portable right here suckin up all my game time.
I'm not that into fighting games, so I'm not sure what the standard is for 3D fighters, but considering the smaller screen size, it doesn't look too bad, and appears to run pretty fast.

I want it to look good, I'm hoping the detractors are wrong, but I'm just being cautious. The reason being that I've read from people that have played the game at events that it does not look too hot in person, and I've also read a couple articles deconstructing the graphics and pointing out vast deficiencies. I also posted a couple of screenshots a few pages back that looked PSP level. Some think that the trailers have some level of bullshot going on. I really hope it's all just BS cause I want the game.

I'm stuck in Disgaea now. I leveled Mao to over 600, leveled a monk dude over 500... and I've run out of places to go. I can't pass the bill for the hall of ordeals (its like 30% Aye at best). What do I do to proceed? Bribe the hell out of the naysayers? They won't take any of my items, even the super expensive ones.
I might be ahead of some players but someone must be burning out on this game worse than me, right?
Can't you pass it with force? I've never gotten that far in a Disgaea game, but I would think if you are lvl 500 you have surpassed most of the voters. Maybe just keep trying until you get a bunch of low level voters, and then force it?

You can actually use it over 3G... frankly I'm shocked AT&T was cool with that considering how much they restricted 3G for games.
