I wonder if an Ill/Rad was able to do it before, even.
I can't recall a concrete example of it due to it having been so long ago, but I'd be surprised if an Ill/Rad couldn't solo a GM before i6, what with multiple sets of PA and Phantasms out.
Yeah, my Rad/Sonic defender was soloing GMs back in like i12 or something.
And I don't think anyone was pre-IOs, without the recharge it becomes difficult for them to tank it during the PA downtime. Might have been though can't really say for sure.
So an interesting thing happened when I made my stupid joke staff fighter.
I really fucking dug playing it.
I didn't immediately look for Narbus or Scott to get me to the 30s. Everyone was so giddy with their bad puns that we all just decided to constantly team with each other because it was so much fun to see all of those cones and aoes going off. I actually managed to outlevel the Shining Stars Arc, and was depressed for about 5 minutes before yet another All Staff Team formed up and it got me to DOs. Then I literally spent the last 5 hours going through the Faultline Arc. Mainly because, believe it or not, there were people IN FAULTLINE. So once again Team Staff bogaloo'd our way through anything the game could throw at us.
For a set that apparently is Sub-OP, doesn't do nearly enough damage blahblahblah, It's a set that's about as fucking versatile as Peanut Butter.
Shit just goes with everything.
Staff has a lot going for it, and I'm surprised it's not considered top-tier. It's got the endurance usage of Claws, while also having superior mitigation (knockup and melee defense) and AoE ability. Maybe Sky Splitter sucks for soloing GMs or something. Recharge time isn't bad, either. With a few LotGs and/or an Agile Alpha you're looking at constant AoE goodness with zero downtime.
Oh man, that's the other thing. They were smart enough to realize that a set that's all about "1234,1234,1234" should be relatively fast on the uptake. So not only is the default pretty damn high, but they give you a Staff Form that raises the recharge even further!

So a couple of questions.
No chance that Valk/Battle Maiden is going to get a redesign to use the staff set with her spear, is there?
And I read somewhere that there was a Preatorian Blue Steel back in the day (when Preatorians were just mirror universe villains) called Black Iron, but he was "killed by Cole for being too weak" (Shield defense/melee took too long to get working is my guess). Any truth to that?
There was a player-summit held by the devs today. Here's the highlights from at least the initial portion of it found on the CoH boards.
These are all my notes on the Keynote Speech:
Pummit Keynote
They're posting player surveys after the summit to help the devs make decisions on future direction
Zwill measures the caffiene in the room with the loudness of the yays at the start.
Zwill introduces speakers for keynote: Ross "Giant Monster" Borden (VP), Studio General Manager Brian "Crosscheck" Clayton (big Sharks fan, apparently), Protean, War Witch, Positron
There are Reveals coming at the summit and fun panels. Zwil talks about the success of the Design a Costume Set Workshop. He shows off the Retro Sci-Fi set (which I can't see).
Zwill talks schedule, accidently labels "Paragon Market Panel" "Paragon Marketing Panel." Apparently will have spreadsheets and graphs!
One of the panels is "Make Your Case for Zone Revamp." Also Design a Costume and Design a Power Set panels.
Can't see the Studio Update speech because of stupid Ustream ad spam. Sad pandas.
Okay, didn't miss much. Crosscheck gives general upbeat speach. "We've made great strides, especially in the last few years." *takes a shot* Talks about the art team and praises the leader of the art team and design team, their new tech director. It's a general backpatting speech bosses make.
Implemented a new policy: if you've been on the team 10 years, you get to become producer.
lolEVE.
Freedom Update from Giant Monster - Ross Borden is a behind the scenes guy who's been there 7 years. Since they were prepping for CoV. Talks about HeroClix.
Talks about Paragon Rewards Program.
So much reverb! Someone messed up the audio settings.
Shows off the Mecha armor costume set for the T9 reward coming with i23.
The giant beam laser sword.
Super Packs - "Really really interesting." "We saw that you guys have a few concerns." "We learned a lot from you guys." - they made quite a bit of money off them - they sold over 3 million cards (600,000 packs). So they're moving to the next Super-Pack 2: Rogues and Vigilantes.
They'll talk more about those at the Paragon Market Panel.
"Preview" of a mystery costume set. Looks like a space pirate.
Just a goofy silhouette.
Nate (Second Measure) is working on a new exciting project. They won't tell us.
War Witch: Every time I do one of these, Matt throws me under the bus. He's like the little brother I never wanted.
War Witch talks about Issue 23.
Hybrid Slot for Incarnates: Boosts core abilities or shore up weaker areas.
New Magisteream Trial to confront Tyrant.
Ad eats her speech on that, but in the trial Nova Praetoria gets all shot up.
Leather Armor and Chainmail Armor - both underarmor for the Black Knights. Free to us! (for VIPs)
TUNNEL System - transit system to get around from Praetorian zones, Paragon, Rogue Isles.
Pandora's Box - new sig arc coming with Issue 23. The first half of it anyways.
Protean talks about Night Ward.
Night Ward is continuation of the Praetoria story, starts up right where First Ward ends.
First thing you do: rescue Katie Douglas, and carries you over into the shadow realm between the world of the living and the dead.
Night Ward is kind of a byproduct of the universe trying to figure out what to do with the Apparitions.
Paths of light and dark.
A more magical zone, with spirit lanterns and stuff.
Ideas, thoughts, dreams blur over into there. It's also where the Praetorian Midnighters were hiding, who relocated their mansion there thinking they'd be safe.
Animus Arcana enemy group - living spells and objects.
Drudges - actual denizens of the netherworld. They dig up the souls of the dead and carry them over to the other side... where ever that is.
Some of them dress as bobby cops.
Black Knights - who come to Night Ward to persue a particular evil soul, and they govern the Eternal Prison.
Talons of Vengeance have also arrived, persistant devils they are.
Conctacts: Katie Douglas reappears, also living spells, a talking coyote with a very annoying sound (coyotes are annoying), rogue Black Knights.
Positron's speech is titled "Soon(tm)".
Talks about other upcoming stuff!
Power Sets!
Zwil: I want you guys to pretend to act surprised, or Something Awful might happen.
No animations yet, so just descriptions.
Power Sets: Nature Affinity! Put stacks of Bloom on Allies that boosts your Healing. Heal Over Time and Debuff set.
Bio Armor. New defense set! New damage absorbtion mechanic. Probably broken in some ways, so they're gonna be testing that one for a while.
Water Blast! Yay! Posi: I trust you will professional about the colors you use (or use appropriate names, please!).
Upcoming Market Items. Amlifiers, more enhancement trays.
Costumes!
Very early stuff, still in concept art.
Cyberpunk! Concept art, with robot arm and new DUSTER COAT.
Cool robot arm.
New Tights! Tights, patterns, textures. More bases for costumes and stuff. Showed some concept ideas for stuff they're playing with.
New Annual Event!
Summer Blockbuster Double Feature! So "you can be in the movies in City of Heroes."
Two new movies. Two parter.
Time Gladiator and Casino Heist.
Built brand new theater lobby map.
Contest winners: Acsension, others. Missed by ad!
Casino Heist. You and your three companions take on a different role in the story. Hitter, Hacker, Grifter and Thief. You perform the heist in the movie.
Brand new casino map!
Thief steals stuff from the boss's office, Hitter takes out generator, Grifter distracts staff, Hacker installs outdated OS with wrong date. Laser grid!
Time Gladiator! Colleseum map! Fight enemies from across space and time! Minotaur and Handmaidens!
Ninja intermission! Kill enough rikti monkeys, get Ninja Monkey badge!
Two mecha robots. WIP.
Fight the God Champion Himself if you do well enough!
Q&A
Devs: Majority of players want us to return to Primal Earth, put a bow on Praetoria. So they're refocusing more on Primal stuff.
Q about Absorbtion. Devs: It's like temporary HP over your regular HP
Q on Praetoria in Ouro. Devs: Turns out there's some stick spots in coding the GR content into Ouro. Working on it, no promises.
Q on asymetrical shoulder armor. When will we be seeing that. Devs: Mecha has some.
Q: When will we get a cat vanity pet. Devs: Stay tooned.
Q: Why not release the sig arcs in Beta before release? Devs: With Pandora's Box, will be. Few little bugs they're hammering out, but they're releasing Episode One on Beta in the next couple weeks.
Q: About mid-level TF's, like Warrior's TF. Devs: "I'd love to. I just need War Witch to point the gun at me and tell me to do it." Zwil: "And that's what we call passing the buck."
Q: Porting CoH to Android. Devs: *drag up their chief engineer* Engineer: No.
Q: Why is Recluse dead in every single universe but Primal Earth? Devs: He's an interesting character... and writing several Recluses would make my head explode. Hard enough writing multiple Statesmen. ... but he's dead.
Q: About getting new stuff into AE and stuff lagging behind. Devs: Not been a priority in the short term. Tried to add new maps and enemies. Regarding powersets, they kind of fell behind. They try to lag it one issue behind. New villain groups in i23, new power sets are generally going in in i24.
There's a couple of things not covered in the notes that I found over in the CoH thread at SA coming from someone who may be a dev that posts there.
Also, Radiation Armor just crowd-designed and is gonna be a new powerset. Resistance toggles, taunt aura that does -regen, absorb shield with +recharge, a self rez that's an aoe damage power when you're not dead, and a lot of radiation puns. It already sounds overpowered.
At least I can't leak this one though.
Wait. This was crowd-designed like 6-7 months ago. Is it really becoming a thing? It looked like a badass alternative to Dark Armor when they were designing it back then.
It was their "design a powerset" panel. Next up is a crowd sourced "design a costume set", which is how we got the Retro Sci-Fi set from the last Player Summit. People were throwing out some other ideas for powersets like throwing weapons and air control, but rad armor got everyone all excited so they went with it. Rad Melee may also be coming with it too.
I can't remember if what powers get what is accurate (stream audio is kinda poo poo), but it had every damage type resisted, a taunt aura, status protection, absorb shields, a self heal, -dmg, -regen, a +recharge "miniature accelerate metabolism" for yourself and maybe allies, and a Rise of the Phoenix type self rez that attacks and rezzes you, or just attacks if you're alive. They also mentioned giving it a limited damage aura that would turn the taunt aura into a damage aura when you use another power.
e: New costume set is Post Apocalyptic themed. Other themes that were considered were "aquatic life" and "paramilitary".
e2: The "revamped" zone they settled on is Independence Port, stuff about the italian mafia Famiwy and Yakuza Tsoo drug war. And Lusca is there too.
Please tell me somebody at least shouted out 'insect control' at some point.
There were a few other contenders, but most people choked when they went up to pitch a set. There was Air Blast, Air Control, Weapon/Gun Assault/Manipulation for Blasters and Doms, Throwing Weapons, Magnetism Control, and Rad Armor/Rad Melee. The top choices were Air Blast, the two Rad sets, and Throwing Weapons. They had a few restrictions, namely no MM sets, no whips, no ranged & melee combo sets (pistol/sword), no stretching/size changing sets, and no carp melee.
The other zones that got pitched were making Boomtown into a robotic uprising zone with a mixed robot group w/ clockwork, nemesis, basically every steampunk robot. Someone pitched revitalizing Perez with the gang war elements there and having the Hellions burn down half the park, blow holes in the outer wall, etc. Striga was pitched as a Council/5th/Warriors revamp zone with the giant mec man coming out of the volcano being the zone event - Positron wanted to make it a villain only zone. Shadow Shard pitch involved shrinking it down to one or two zones, conflict with Rularuu, Midnighters and Nemesis, and being co-op. Kings Row got pitched as a Gotham-esque zone in perpetual night where you run arcs with Blue Steel and do cop stuff. They settled on IP, with Family/Tsoo drug war and 5th/Council war over the bridge being a focus, mentioned they wanted to shrink the zone and involve Lusca as well.
I was there today, and part of going was a bag of small goodies. This included a Collectors DVD edition game code. I already have this.
So who wants it? It comes with the following:
Prestige Power Slide
VIP Badge on all characters (or Destined One for Villains)
DVD edition cape, sort of translucent thing
First person to post that they want it will get the code PM'd to them whenever the hell I wake up tomorrow. Night!

Damn, missed it.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
That old physical stuff pack, with a statesman HeroClix, is what it sounds like.
Yep, that's the one. Also had the PVP comic thing and the Paragon City map. I've been to both player summits now and they have given stuff like that at both. Old bonuses they had extras of. Shirts, badge holders, costume power codes from old Hero-cons, etc...
There's no plan, there's no race to be run

have you guys seen this shit? I have to wonder whether or not Paragon thought to make the craft non-collidable. Otherwise, well, all sorts of popular places are about to get buried by impassable flyers.

Oh, that was fast. They showed that in a slide at the summit but I didn't realize they meant this soon.
Looks like its 700 points. I might save up for that. I don't even group that much and it'd be nice to have a perma-missionport every 30 min.
There's no plan, there's no race to be run

it has a 30 minutes cooldown and there's no reason the flier would stay around for that long, so I dunno if there's a need to worry about being 'buried' under fliers.
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget

What happens if like 5-10 people all use it at once in the same spot? Like, right next to a quest giver or the Black Market/AH npc?

again, the question is how long it persists. A minute, maybe? That just doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
15 people, all standing next to the Auction NPC, head off to their next mission. Leaving 15 aircraft there for a full minute. Now the AH is hard to target and, if they have collision, impossible to approach. As soon as they start to clear up, the cycle starts again.
And this isn't even taking into account people using this to grief other players in the same way, once they realize they can.

so basically, what if 15 people make a concerted effort to grief the market NPC (assuming these things aren't suppressed near the market like lots of stuff is?)
if it were me I'd probably just move over to a different marketeer npc, or take 30s and go to a different zone's market

Anyway, it doesn't summon a "clickable" craft that everyone on the team has to hit, hop in, then it runs off. It works exactly like team teleport, where the most you get is a 10 second prompt asking if you want to take the thing to a mission. It shows up, the 'hop in' animation plays for everyone who had clicked yes, and then it's off to the mission door. The "hop out" animation plays and blammo. Away it goes.
Also the new Anniversary event is live. It's a reskin of the rikti/zombie invasions but with Nemesis because even though those are boring and stupid apparently they can be shit out really easy so fuck yeah low hanging fruit.
Get enough people together and a Nemesis AV spawns. Kill it and the the "A Nemesis Plot..." badge.

Yeah I think they are still getting used to doing things like this. I almost feel like the game is on life support, if that makes sense. They seem just as shocked as anyone that their new business model is working, and now they have to learn to adjust to the new schedule.
I also suspect they aren't yet making quite enough money to develop large amounts of new content. I am happy it's working for them however.

have you not paid a single bit of attention for the past three issues, man
Duders, since freedom hit they've released seven new powersets in addition to a full round of powerset proliferation (unless you like dominators). They've revamped Dark Astoria, added in First Ward, are about to launch Night Ward, and every issue has come with at least one new iTrial. I don't even know how many new costume sets and powers have come out.
I have absolutely no idea what you think life support looks like but this is not it. I'm not entirely thrilled with some of the stuff they've released and some of the choices they've made but there is no way to say they're not producing at a much, much faster clip than ever before they went free to play.

If you want to see a game on life support, check out Champions Online. They have plenty of players but, well, there's an awful lot of stagnation going on. Perfect World has managed to mire the game in (what I like to call) The Great Cash Shop Hellcycle.*
*
1. PW wants money, so they push Cryptic to implement all sorts of bullshit cash-grab mechanics (like chance-based upgrades that you have to spend money on to have a decent shot at) and flood the store with easy-to-develop fluff items.
2. This leaves the dev team unable to create actual new content in any reasonable time frame, so players can only use their new shinies in the same tired zones and missions.
3. They get bored and stop playing/spending, which makes PW scream at Cryptic to poop out more cash shop stuff to prop up their numbers. Go to Step 1, do not pass Go, do not collect a $200 lifetime sub fee.
CoH doesn't have this problem because it has tons of content for freebies to begin with (due to surviving on subs for a long time) while simultaneously maintaining enough of a subscriber base to support a constant stream of new content. CO's problems stem from the game being released in a turd-like state, so they had to spend their time making the game work properly instead of making new content.
Every time I get mad at this game, and sit there and question why I've given them over a thousand dollars over seven years, I look at Champions.
"Well, it could be worse."
I remember when Champions came out everyone was all "it's going to kill CoX!" and I played the beta and was all "no it isn't, it is a turd" and everyone was all "SHUT UP SHUT UP".
Well, don't get me wrong. I love Champion's gameplay. There are tons of different ways to skewer the bad guys. The problem, of course, is that I'm always skewering the same bad guys, in the same areas, for the same reasons, every time I roll a character. In CoH, unless I'm abusing Ouro, I can easily skip 2/3rds of the game's contacts and still hit 50 without any gaps.

The CO Beta was the only Beta I've ever been invited to where I got bored and logged off to play something else (COH, incidentally).
Waiting in line for a spot to wait for Ferd to respawn was just mind-boggling. I mean, who thinks world spawns for quest completion were a good idea? In 2009? While there were plenty of other problems and the game was released early, it was bad design that really killed CO.
And they also give you a nice, centralized place to do crafting and cram random crap. >_>
Oddly, I'm always rather annoyed when I realize I haven't tagged a character into the Dawn, Twilight, or Midnight, because then I have to walk all the way over to someplace else, and I don't have access to the enhancement/salvage bins.
or be like The Cool Kids, make a costume 3 inches away from copyright infringement and join my Supergroup,
giving you bonus access to the main PA supergroup base, which is pretty much the only reason to join a Supergroup these days.
Had some good times running as Princess of Guardia, a completely original Ice/TA troller and in no way inspired by Marle from Chrono Trigger.
