I was discussing with my wife how funny it is that when someone dies, regardless of how, some blood will come out of their mouth. That's like the universal symbol for death on Supernatural.

the show uses a boatload of tropes both incidentally and a lot of the time in a tongue in cheek manner

    that is one of many

    Skull Man, you're being silly.

The show has had its share of people in it all the same. Mortal or otherwise. Some of which are recurring characters!
Azazel, Lucifer, Crowley, All Four Horsemen, The Vast Majority of Demons and Angels: White people = Totally fine.

Crazy ass hunter: Black guy = RACISM

You missed the point pretty hard. The proportion of black people who are bad/good/nuanced vs. the proportion of white people who are bad/good/nuanced is incredibly unequal to the point that it is problematic.

    A couple things.

One, there are more white badguys than anything else on the show.
Two, Skull pointed out that the first appearance of a black dude in the show with a significant plot role happened to be a pyschopath. This is ignoring that the character was fitting in numerous themes (succumbing to the instincts of the monster and becoming the monster) while being a play on Blade. Maybe Skull would rather the character be cast as a white guy, since the character fit in perfectly with the narrative (as hackneyed as it is at times). Menacing the girl with a knife? Has something to do with the fact that cutting of their heads is the only way to kill.

And the only reason why Dean didn't kill the girl was because he was proving a point of loyalty to Sam. One thing about the show I've noticed is that nobody is able to resist the monster urges. That vamp girl that they captured?
Eventually, she killed someone and fed in season 6. All her nest did.

Oh, the first black guy on the show was a badguy. There have been a shitton of black guys and gals since then and there has been as much variance as the rest of the cast.

And hey, at least there are black actors on the show as opposed to asians who get basically zero representation at all.

Keep in mind that by season six
Three characters from season 1 are alive. And the only one still alive who hasn't gone total darkside at one point is Bobby.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

munkus the point is that literally the first black male character in something like 25 hours of the show was an unsympathetic psychopath who spent the climax of the episode menacing a white woman

there can be a dozen reasons for it and justifications or whatever but the point is that they chose to break the whitewashing by featuring a totally negative character who was worse than the monsters and it's a little rich to try to swallow the idea that it wasn't some innocent, non-subconsciously-racist decision when, as I mentioned, he was the first black male in 25 hours

i never really picked up on any racism in this show, and i'm pretty hypersensitive to that sorta stuff

it's just a very white person show which i guess could be argued is inherently racist, but the actual black characters seem varied and distinct and nonstereotypical which is actually sorta refreshing

i think it'd be easier to argue the show has some seriously sexist elements to it

Some episodes of the show are casually sexist in a "tough men roll into town and save the pretty woman"

and I mean, that is a staple of the kind of horror that Supernatural is based off and plays around with

which is not an excuse, just an observation

it doesn't bother me, but isn't that pretty much the dictionary definition of privilege? food for thought.

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
So yeah I wouldn't say that Supernatural is actively racist or sexist

but it does show privilege on the part of writers, at times

not that it is by any means worse than arguably most shows on tv

  • The Lovely BastardThe Lovely Bastard Registered User regular
the thing about privilege is you can find it in literally everything if you are looking, and pretending that there is any goddamn way to please everyone is a fool's errand. Unless it is being actively, consciously, and aggressively denigrating, it all comes off like you are looking for a fight, even if you aren't. because, at the end of the day, it is no one's job to protect your feelings.

however i, like skull man, fuckin' love this show and deffo don't think it needs to be particularly condemned or anything. also all the former x-files actors that show up are rad.

It really doesn't matter when, in the grand scheme of the show, it was just the first black character. Especially since his character fit part and parcel perfect with the themes of the fucking show. That character was gonna be made regardless. The only thing placating your upset sensibilities would accomplish would be one less job for that actor.

Boo hoo, the first character was a badguy. In a show where half the characters are darkside. He wasn't even a straight up badguy, just an overzealous guy. (And since [season 6 spoiler]
the vamp he was gonna kill ended up feeding anyway he ended up being right about her and her kind.

Strangely enough, that has been a major theme of the show, however inadvertantly. If you are condemned to go darkside, you will go darkside. The only exception has been one brief, really silly-suspension-of-belief moment in the season 5 finale.

    On a sidenote (s5 spoilers)
    Yes. Crowley is fucking awesome.
