"Of course Mvp is going to do a hellion/medivac/raven rush into mass unupgraded battlecruisers every single game, that's how Koreans play TvP now."
when i move to korea i'm going to assassinate the person who handles the between-game music for GOM and take his place
and then it will be nothing but minimal techno and french house
all goddamn day
yeah it's so fucking bad and I would love that
if you could throw in some psytrance and nyc/chicago/philly house that would be great too.... i have to say that mimimalist techno/detroit techno is the fuel for most of my ladder binges.
the old adage "don't hate the player, hate the game" comes to mind.......
don't hate the player
don't hate the game
hate yourself for being bad.
you just have to understand that in settings like the GSL, the concept of "not doing dickish builds" goes out the fucking window
if doing cheesy annoying all-ins will win you the series, then you do cheesy annoying all-ins
if you aren't there to beat everyone you play and win the whole thing, then why are you there?
Refer to Sirlin's, "Playing to Win" specifically, "Being a Scrub" for a more detailed explanation.
If I know that my opponent cant stop a 6pool, in a tournament setting, I'm going to 6pool until he holds it. Every fucking time. It's not about playing beautiful strats, or interesting builds, or playing with "honor", sometimes the only thing that matters is winning. You do what gives you the best chance to win, no matter how "cheesy" or "abusive" some people may think the tactic is.
Creating rules for yourself that don't exist in the game only makes you a scrub, and puts you at a massive disadvantage. #feelinglikejaziek
way to drag half a thought out into a whole load of stuff
Question: Sirlin was approached by Blizzard to be the balance dude before Blizz settled on Browder/Kim. Do you think Sirlin would have been better/worse/same?

The same. I believe that the SC design team is governed by its own history, a rabid fanbase, and Activision. It would be interesting to think what Sirlin thinks of balance in SC2, of course after he did his research.

i think so, he's be the balance dude for a lot of fighters. Personally, given Browder's history with the C&C franchise, I'd put money on Sirlin doing a better job. I can't think of a C&C that didn't have outright abusable strats that never got addressed.
To be fair, SC2 is really well balanced as it is though. Sure, most people think T is op, but it has been coming and going in waves. There's also two more expansions worth of units to factor into the mix. SC1 wasn't where it is today until after BW. And they didn't have to deal with TL and an extremely whiny community blowing up their forums/twitter for each proposed change they made.

Browder's never done balance though. He's always game design. Balance is a totally different group of people.
Also at the risk of sounding like a broken record, SC2 is a really, really balanced game. Yes, there are issues, but all of the races can and do win tournaments, which in and of itself is a feat for a competitive RTS (lol any of the Dawn of War games?).
Well, T has had its phase (and longest running) of everyone saying it was OP.
P also got its phase until it got nerfed by ~10 patches.
When do Zerg get their turn?

I think Sirlin would have made a lot of people unhappy. There is a 1-credit elective course here at UC Berkeley on SCII, and apparently Sirlin guest taught one class. He thinks that there should be an APM cap because the asymmetry should arise solely from the game and not from player physical ability.
It's a fair design point to make, but it's not what people want to see in a REAL TIME GAME.
Sceptre: Penny Arcade, where you get starcraft AND marriage advice.
3clipse: The key to any successful marriage is a good mid-game transition.
If you push roundhouse kick faster than I push roundhouse kick, there is an upper limit to how much the speed difference matters. At some point, we will be producing the same number of kicks per second, even if you are hitting the button twice as fast. Reaction time and anticipation are retained as individual player skills. Sirlin would argue that those are more "cerebral" skills than seeing whose finger can move the fastest. As a contrast, we know that a robot in SCII would never lose because of perfect micro while never dropping macro.
It's just a point of comparison. It depends on what you want the game to be about. Within human limits, I think it's fine that some people have more effective APM than others. Sirlin would argue that's like letting your opponent take 2 turns in a row in chess. For SCII, I'm fine with that.

See, I hate his position. I see it as analogous to saying that certain pitchers in baseball can only throw so fast. Or in american football a running back can only run so fast. Etc. It's a dumb arbitrary limit. Really impressive APM and multi-tasking are indicative of a very high level of skill/talent at the game, and capping them artificially just strikes me as completely ridiculous.
So, having not played Starcraft 2 in months, I had a Starcraft 2 dream tonight. I was playing against a zerg, we're getting into lategame and he sends 50 drones at me. "Oh shit, he's going to have a massive army, I still have like 60 food tied up in workers!" So I take all my probes on low resource bases and send them at him. I've got his small cluster of bases closed in, I begin a healthy cannon contain to back up my massive army. I finally finish setting up my cannons and suddenly realize I only have around 200 minerals left and oh my god he's sending zerglings into my only mining base which for some reason is right next to his and I only have 10 probes and they're all going to die and my units are too slow to get there to defend ahhh.

And blaming mvp for going for earlygame wins is silly, he'd be stupid not to in the current state of TvP.

Man, jaziek's posts aren't even that bad. Does anyone remember sylem/fizban?
Now there was a reason to use the ignore feature.
I know nothing about this, really, but it makes me glad he didn't get to do anything with this game.
