So, in this thread, mashups, bootlegery, bastard-pop and the like!
If you aren't familiar with the concept, allow Wikipedia to make the introductions:
Mashup, or bootleg, is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination of the music from one song with the a cappella from another. Typically, the music and vocals belong to completely different genres. At their best, bastard pop songs strive for musical epiphanies that add up to considerably more than the sum of their parts.
Now I'm not going to lie, a lot of them are shit, but a rare few DJ's rise above their fecal brethren, producing tracks that will grab you by the wrists, hips and ankles - forcing you to make an ass of yourself on the dancefloor. Some tracks actually gain the approval (post-production) of the artists from which the samples were pulled, as was the case with Mark Vidler's
Ray of Gob, which borrowed from Madonna, the Sex Pistols and a television interview with Rotten. Others, though, got the shit sued out of them, as was the case, I believe, with DJ Dangermouse's
The Grey Album (which you can find pretty easily through google).
So if this is of interest to you, post away! Sites, DJ's, parties, anything; I'll get the ball rolling with a couple of sites/blogs that keep tabs on the mashup community:
Go Home Productions (Mark Vidler's Site)
Simon IdolMashupTownMashup IndustriesQ-Unit (You may have heard of it; Gabe and Tycho mention it in one of the podcasts)

kind of hit or miss. sometimes they take a song with an absurdly good beat (umbrella, what you know) and try and mash it up and it just doesn't work because the original is so astounding.
i recommend the r. kelly vs broken social scene 'i'm a flirt' mashup.
also i just heard their amerie vs daft punk mashup and it's incredible.
