I start working as assistant manager today. Which means a 13.5 hour work day, woo! At least it will be nice when I start getting a bigger payslip.

I have stumbled into the world of UK tax codes. My PhD had a stipend rather than a salary, so the end result seems to be that I'm going to get taxed to fuck for a few months. Woo.

On the other hand, our support staff seem to be top notch, so maybe I can just ask HR what the deal is and whether anything can be done.

Earning more money than I ever have and being in the worst financial position I ever have been is an odd combination.

This is set to a background of having no idea how to do my job.

Moan, moan, moan, bitch, bitch, bitch. I have a job, and I didn't misrepresent myself at any stage of the interview, so I'm sure all this will work out fine. I just don't do well with a lack of stability.

Okay if you are going to quit a food service job that does not have many employees, call and let them know. Or answer the goddamn phone when they call to see what is up.

How fucking hard is that. Don't just quit showing up and make people scramble to fill your shift at the last second.

Two fucking people have done this to me within a month.

    I hate them

Courtesy is too hard, Art! Sucks to hear.

So I got an email from my supervisor (or agency contact, really, as I'm not very supervised) explaining that I'd only been kept out of the loop until the last minute because a client wasn't forthcoming with details, which wasn't an apology for making me think I had to work a Bank Holiday as such but it was still recognising that it was annoying, so that was nice.

Except the email closed with a slightly snarky suggestion that I could be more helpful to my assistant guy, in a help him help you sort of way.

I've written about a thousand words for a really thorough step-by-step guide if I do say so myself, so whenever I've tried fobbing him off I'm actually just telling him to answer his own question with the information I've already supplied him with (I'm using "him", although the name given was potentially unisex).

So I'm not sure what this guy has been telling the supervisor, or whether the supervisor is just reaching and jumping to conclusions, but I am not impressed; for courtesy's sake I don't mind pointing the new guy in the right direction, but I am not some kind of mentor at their beck and call, especially when they fail to grasp things I've walked them through three or four times

I won't cry many tears if and when this contract reaches its end and doesn't get an extension

great, some miscommunication between people -> wrong datas bein sent out to client

and now it kinda is partly my fault but it's not really, one person didn't tell me some things had changed, and then i did stuff based on not knowing those things

Question (possibly for @JoeUser but for others too): The offer I want they already negotiated and offered more.
But their relocation isn't what I want. If company #2 offers more, is it kosher to see if company #1 will do any more? Mostly because I'm not sure I can afford to eat the remaining relocation costs.
Or is one Ask-For-More all I should do?

Yeah, lay your cards on the table. Say what you need for relocation.

Saying that, if you do this you also need to be happy with walking away from the offer if they say no.

@Blake T Yeah I did, and company #1 offered me half that in relo. I'm hoping company #2 offers me something good, so I can tell company #1 to match or come up a lot.
And if not, I still have a job, I can always try again somewhere else later.

It's good to know my value and I don't want to regret taking a job somewhere less than I should be paid (again).
That being said, company #1 is really interesting so I do hope it works out.

Yeah I know I'm late on this, but companies paying relocation costs is getting pretty rare. Also remember that relocation costs you pay are tax deductible!

Even consensual fobbing is gonna come back to bite you in the ass if they get pissed off or fired and decide to take you down with them

I did get what I asked for in relo expenses but we negotiated the total between my annual salary and my relo to come up with the annual earnings that I wanted. In hindsight that could have totally bit me in the ass though, really glad that our profit sharing is still a thing.

I have generally avoided them, but my current employer wants me to build "eminence" by being certified for things. And it goes on my resume, so yay

My company is a horrible, horrible company to work IT in. It is by and large a marketing company, which means those with the best presentation skills and 3 word tag-lines go pretty far here. Meanwhile, the decisions being made by these marketers drive the IT portion of the business into the effing ground.

No joke, I have pushed 1 successful piece of code consisting of 3 tables into production in the 7 months I have been here, at the cost of ~$2.3mil internally. It is being heralded as a supreme success in exec meetings too, since the last successful production push happened like 2 years ago for my department.

    Some bad decisions:
    1. Let's build a product management suite without talking to product managers, because that takes time, and "Fast wins games!" Project fails after delivery to production because of lack of adoption. Hi5

    2. Let's make 80% of our IT workforce 1 year contractors because "Lean Business Solutions", and not focus on documenting or cross training, so that pretty much every system in production has no SME, poorly documented code, and fails on a regular basis. Hi5

    3. Let's start 3 projects at the same where 2 are completely dependent on the success of the 3rd, because "Goal Line Push", and then when the primary project starts failing due to them realizing this was a bad idea and shut down the other two projects without documentation, throwing away all of that codebase and several million dollars.

    Bingo.

If you become the expert, then every dumbass, moron, fuctard, and lazy ass will hunt you down to ''help'' them do whatever it was you got a cert or passed a licensing for. Which is a fancy way of saying now it's your job.

Which is why I let my HAZMAT shipping credentials lapse. I was tired of having to not only do it for my job, but for every goddamn person who was too stupid or lazy to take the same training and pass the test.

I told my managers when I was applying to jobs. I am a Good Employee.

(Okay granted, it's slightly different since I am basically the entire salad bar department so I knew I'd have to train my replacement(s), but still. I am a conscientious lad (tm).)

In other news, my training manuals arrived today! Roughly 600 pages of stuff to read, from the history of the fort and island, to soldier life during the period, to various park information. Plus the manuals for my main job duties plus an additional manual about the War of 1812 programs we'll be doing to commemorate the bicentennial, and a book about historical interpretation in general. There's even sheet music with bugle calls and a cd with some of the music I'll be performing (I assume that's more for the singing I'll be doing, I haven't listened to it yet).

I am absurdly excited, and just a tiny bit daunted.

Seriously you guys, I have two separate manuals of arms.

Huh. That's interesting... Although my friends in the Bay Area say it isn't rare for them, but maybe it's a region-specific thing?
Everything they've offered is great except for relo. The second company confirmed they'll make an offer "soon" and they know my other offer expires Wednesday.
I told them I need it today or at the latest early tomorrow to even consider them. So hopefully I'll be able to ask the first company for a bit more relo (Since I can't eat $2000+ in the difference in moving costs).
If so I'll be happy to say yes.
