Assassin's Creed is really the series you wanna point to as an example of a plot-critical series where the first one is a demoralizing chore to pull yourself through.
Oohhh shit yeah. I am totally down with this one. Two was so much better in every way and I would actively recommend against playing the first. I mean it had a great setting but man that gameplay needed some refinement

I actually didn't mind Assassin's Creed 1
That said, it had the worst ending in the series, and I did feel it was a chore going through all that work for that shit ending

I'd probably argue pretty strongly for Mass Effect 1 having the most cinematic and tense ending sequences in video games in general.
I'd argue pretty strongly that Mass Effect 1 is a chore to play after experiencing Mass Effect 2 and I wish I had the ability to skip all combat in it forever like that one Bioware executive lady suggested and got death threats over.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Mass Effect 2 is absolutely the high point of that series for me
Mass Effect 3 feels too fast and shooter-y for me. Like I'm playing Gears of War. And I don't like Gears of War.
Luckily I had absolutely no qualms about turning it down to "narrative" difficulty (which basically means you can't die) and zipping through story beats, since they're the reason I'm there. At the very least, very good on BioWare for doing that.

Putting combat on easy makes a big difference but yeah, it's still not great.
Someone sent you death threats for suggesting being able to skip combat in the game? Were you posting in G&T at the time or something?

I played ME1 recently (for the first time, after 2 and 3) and the combat was pretty fun for me. However, I was playing an Adept which turned into a powerhouse about halfway through the game, which I think made a big difference.
The Mako sections were awful and all of the side content was unplayable. If you played DA2 and got upset at the re-use of dungeon zones, you don't remember ME1.
I think I just ended up trying to do crazy stunts with the Mako and realized I had forgot what side mission I was on.

Guys I'm just a couple of minutes into this Minecraft quick look and I really want to play Minecraft
Shit, I restarted playing as soon as that quick look was over. We used to play a ton in the office. One of the dudes set up his old computer as a server. It was cool.
Because my setup for my 360 is more comfortable than the setup for my laptop, why should you care?
Apparently the XBLA version is missing all the updates past the adventure update, which was released at the end of last year. Though I think I heard it supports 4 player split screen, which seems kinda nice for playing with friends.
This New Assassin's Creed III Trailer is the Very Definition of a 'Teaser' 112
I used to post real trailers, until I took Ubisoft's social media strategy to the knee.
I really don't get the appeal of Minecraft personally
I tried it and it was kinda lame
Totally with the GB crew on this one
Same here.
I mean I've heard it's that whole "make your own fun" deal with it
A ton of games I play have some sort of level editor in them, I never bother with them. I see them as being unnecessary completely to my experience, but neat for the people that want to mess around with them (even if the things they make are never, ever, as good as the things the actual developer makes, so why bother)
But a "game" built around that purpose? Nah. I'd rather pay $40 to have someone make a neat little playhouse for me to run around and do things in than pay $20 for someone to give me the materials and say "Build it yourself without any real direction or objective."

Yeah. For certain types of people, I'm sure it's fantastic and awesome and blahblahblah, but I don't have the time or the inclination to spend my entertainment time making my own fun. I'd probably end up playing like Jeff - just digging to the bottom of the world and getting bored.
I wanna say that I loved Minecraft a lot. I got bored with it, BUT that was after many many hours of playing it. I got Final Fantasy hours worth of value from it.
I had a lot of fun building ridiculously large pagodas on multiplayer servers.
There are a lot cooler materials to build with these days, so some of this would look a lot better with things you could make now.
The outside:
The Meditation Hall (Bamboo lines the walls and soothing-sounding water runs beneath the floor)
The Shaolin training room
The gold Buddha statue with donors listed on the wall
The dining hall
The sleeping chambers
The library
The zen room.

Noted.
As for my interest in this game, watching this video just scratches an exploration itch in my brain.
Because as ambiguous as they are towards this game the part where the Creeper explodes behind them and affects the makeup of his mine is really cool to me.

That one took me a couple weeks at least, and I was playing hours every day. I don't think monsters or damage were on yet, so it wasn't too difficult other than falling and having to run back up. I built more pagodas later with damage and monsters on, and it made it a bit tougher for sure. A lot of the work is collecting materials
