I'm curious, is Ramius's aim with the sidebar to have the newest posts continually update, even as the page stays static, or to load once with the rest of the page and stay static. If the former, I can see why he might want to keep the sidebar, but maybe moving something like that towards the bottom of the page might make it a little easier on the eyes. If the latter, then I agree with Tube, in that they should be moved under their respective forum links.

Rough, in and under alternatives. Some thread titles would totally break the formatting though so obviously you'd need to cut them off uniformly and have ellipses or whatever. Also the icons had to be moved down to fit them and make it less cluttered.

...What the hell has got into me? I must have some interface design bug or something. I'm gonna go lie down before I start talking about fancy colour schemes or something.

    Vastly prefer the In. :winky:

And I still say to move the like things together. ODaM and WoW (MMO?) should be at least proximal to G&T. Same for WB, AC and GV, and arguably D&D and SE++. At least then there's the illusion of some form of organization.

No, it's not, it was just there when Ramius initially worked up this design.

Is there any way to provide users with the ability to personalize it (each user gets to set their own forum order)? Someone has probably written a plugin for it.

Personally, I like -SPI-'s modified version. Much cleaner.

OK, no thanks to most of you fucks, I've got a demo available here.

There might still be some minor tweaks, but that should be pretty darn close to the final outcome, barring any useful suggestions from you bunch of rabble.

It looks good, but can the Last Posts take the place of New Posts as the default open section. In that area as well, could the format for the posts match that of the Last Posts section of the Archives/Admin/Misc. Subsection? One other thing, and this is a little self serving, but can the PAX forum be moved from the bottom corner, maybe with the subforum the post was made in somewhere in there too?

I take it that in the real version the thread titles in the lists on the right will be clickable? In which case, awesome!

But is is possible to add a profile option so that the latest thread in each forum is listed under it's button instead of the description?

Overall, I like it; the blank list of forums is at the exact overlap between boring and intimidating ATM, which is not good. If I had known any of this was even possible I would have been begging for it a long time ago....

If SE's going to be listed in line with everything else, it needs a new description more clearly explaining it like every other forum has or there'll be a lot of new people going in clueless as to what it is or never going in at all and not thinking a chat forum exists. It would be nice if Tube's Circus was more prominent, maybe up with the other forums or just somehow more noticeable. As it is, it may as well be the copyright line at the bottom of a page.

maybe font-size, but in FWD's case, I think it is his NoScript Add-On. The sidebar is javascript driven, so if you have script disabled, it is probably gonna present the whole thing expanded...

    Change can be good!

My only addition is that maybe the "new threads" part on the right could also list the forum each respective thread is in. Someone may see an interesting thread title, but end up reading something they didn't want to. I think there could be a big difference between a SE++ thread about Pokemon and a G&T Pokemon thread, for example.

    What I like about it:

I can see all the main forums without scrolling, even if my window is relatively small.
Thread and post interface is pretty cool, but...

What I don't like about it:

The new threads aren't related to their parent forum. I'd rather have them under the actual forum title. If there's a flurry of activity in the AC, I don't really care about it, so I don't want my Latests Postests box filled with threads I'm not interested in.
Also need to see posters name under a new post, otherwise I don't know if it's changed since last time I viewed or posted in that thread.

What I'm not crazy about but it doesn't really affect me so buhuh:

I don't dig the pictures. They don't really improve the interface in any way for me.
From an overall navigation point of view, it doesn't seem as effective as the original layout, but I can't really c/d that until I've had to use it properly.

PS. Don't abloo abloo when people criticize your designs. Good grief.

Looking nice. I like the flashy sidebar, although even if you aren't going to go with the extreme extent of my ideas for that space, it could use some formatting adjustments maybe go with underlined text or something.

Anyway, one thing I noticed. I'm using a widescreen monitor, and I'm noticing that there's an awful lot of blank empty space on either side. This wasn't an issue with the old setup because it would just stretch out to fill whatever size the window was. It makes the whole thing look really empty and sterile. Perhaps you could have the dark grey area down the sides much like the main site itself.

    Uh, yeah. What I said.

It's a shame, because the whole collapsible menu thing could be quite useful, I'm just not sure how you'd incorporate it into the layout. If you stick the whole menu under each forum title, that's just going to be crazy, but making it linked to a button that changes which forum it's looking at would just be a bit cumbersome as well.

I think maybe the whole thing is just a bit too clever in a fashion that ultimately makes it less usable than a simple list of forums with the most recent post in each forum being displayed. But then again, it'd be cool to see the top ten most recent threads/posts in each forum some how, because then you could conceivably just do most of your navigation from the main page.

If there were less forums, then you could have them listed horizontally, and then have a drop down menu beneath each one, but with the current number they'd have to stack and then it'd just become too cluttered.

God, I feel like a diabetic in an ice-cream parlor.

Maybe if the recent posts thing changes based on which icon your cursor is hovering over, showing the most recent posts in the selected forum?

In general, though, the forums move fast enough that listing the first ten or so threads isn't worth anything. It seems like the changes would work far better in a forum much smaller and slower than the one that we actually have.

yeah, I agree about the usefulness of this.

Perhaps this screenshot will help explain:
    after.gif

Under that scenario, does it really matter if the last post is under the forum or in the sidebar? I mean, by putting them in the sidebar (disconnecting them from their forum title), I can sort so the most recently updated go to the top.

PS. Don't abloo abloo when people criticize your designs. Good grief.
It was the lack of design critiques that I was abloo abloo'ing about. I felt there was too much "I don't like change, leave it the same" and "yeah, but what order will the forums be in" and "the important message here is that things shouldn't be changed, just because" in this thread.

Still wouldn't mind the option of having the latest post replace the forum description though. I only need to know that D&D is a more structured alternative to SE++ so many times, yes?
