[Dragon's Dogma] - Please post in new thread

Developed by Devil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Devil May Cry 4 director Hideaki Itsuno and the rest of their team, Dragon's Dogma is a unique blend of games that, in short, has you create a character, choose your class, recruit and share party members from and with your friends, and explore a fully open-ended fantasy setting to complete quests and hunt giant monsters. What's most interesting is what they've taken from Shadow of the Colossus, however.

Eurogamer wrote:
Eventually the beast's wings catch fire and it tumbles to the ground. A quick sprint and we're up close, hacking and slashing with our daggers. But with a press of the R2 button we can grab the beast anywhere, then cling on for dear life, climbing, pulling at its feathers, stabbing frantically, eking down that boss life bar.

Grabbing onto and climbing around bosses is one of Dragon Dogma's most impressive features , and certainly the most thrilling one we've been shown so far. As the griffin flies into the air we hang on for dear life, moving about its body with animations that link together in a silky smooth, realistic fashion. We move from the tail to the back, seeking out weak spots, to the point where we're almost riding it. And stabbing it, of course.

"In a lot of action games, with big enemies the tendency is just to have you hacking away at the shins. You don't get the full effect of fighting a giant boss," Itsuno says. "With this game you can climb all over it. If it has a body part, you can attack it."

The grab attack levels up our interest in Dragon's Dogma. On the ground it lets you pick up smaller enemies and chuck them about, and enables you to come up behind them and hold them in a grip, allowing your pawns to kill them. But it is when used against the game's huge monsters that the grab shines brightest.

Capcom has assembled their largest team to date for Dragon's Dogma. It released in North America on May 22, 2012 and May 25, 2012 for Europe.

[Tips & Tricks]

Vocation Stat Growth & Augments document

New Game+ - After completing the game, a cleared state file is created. By loading it, you can start from the beginning with all your items, leveled vocations, vendor inventory, and NPC affinity status. Monsters are not tougher, but new quests appear on the notice boards with even greater rewards.

Wakestones - Wakestones allow you to bring the dead back to life. This can be used on you, your party members or even other characters in the game world. You may wish to keep that in mind as it can offer interesting new solutions to various quests and further rewards.

Earning Gold - In New Game+, there will be new quests offering very large gold rewards for their completion. But if you want gold now and don't want to spend the time it takes to do those quests, you can abuse the Strider's Pilfer/Master Thief ability. Simply find a pawn roaming the safety of the roads (it does not work inside the cities) and use that ability on them. You'll often find powerful and valuable healing potions, tools, or even equipment. You can refresh their inventory by moving outside of their viewable distance and then back again. They generally carry the same item you originally nicked, though not always. A good route is to leave by Gran Soren's southern exit and then head north, across the bridge, to the castle and then back again.

Forging - You can forge duplicates of items with rift crystals or gold, depending on the quality of the item, by visiting the Black Cat shop in Gran Soren. This comes in handy for certain quests, such as needing the same item to two people or if the required item is something you want to keep for yourself. You can do this with no negative repercussions for notice board quests. It's unwise to do this for quests given by persons, with the exception of the Wyrmking Ring. It's highly recommended to forge it.

Fast Travel? - There is a method of fast travel in the game, though it will become more widely available to you in New Game+. Ferrystones allow you to instantly teleport to a portcrystal. There is a permanent portcrystal in Gran Soren. Later in the game, during a quest, you'll find a portcrystal you can place anywhere on the map. Eventually you'll be able to buy portcrystals for 200,000 gold at the Black Cat in Gran Soren. Ferrystones can be bought from Fournival for 10,000 if you help him during a quest later in the game and from the Black Cat for 20,000. Prices can be reduced if you do further quests for Fournival and gain affinity with the shopkeepers.

Escort Quests - Escort quests allow you to raise the affinity of certain characters, as well as occasionally having worthy item rewards for completing them. They will only be available on the notice boards for a small amount of time, however, typically a scant few in-game days. If you miss one, you may be able to make it available again by raising that character's affinity via presents.

Augments - Augments are passive bonuses unlocked by raising your vocation level. But once you unlock and purchase them, they can be used across all vocations. A Fighter may be a better tank if you acquire a few Warrior augments first!

Shortcuts - Directly west of and a short run from Gran Soren is a place called the Ancient Quarry. It cuts through the mountain to a lake on the other side that's also very close to the Shadow Fort. Unfortunately, the Ancient Quarry is at first full of goblins, bandits and three ogres, but completing a quest from a merchant just outside its entrance will allow you to clear its halls permanently. A new merchant with powerful gear will even set up shop in one of its rooms once the deed is done. A second shortcut in the Witchwood - a path next to Selene's hut - will place you right next to Cassardis, but unfortunately it only works that direction.

Golden Idol - Eventually, Caxton and Magdeleine in Gran Soren will offer you a quest to find rare idols from a blacksmith in order to upgrade their inventory. The Golden Idol is the most prized. You can acquire it by completing Fournival's second available quest, which requires you to escort and entertain his daughter Symone around town. You must complete her requests in a timely fashion or you'll risk losing the reward.

The first task is to play hide-and-seek, and she'll run inside the inn next to the fireplace. The second task is to bring her a flask of water. The third and final task is to race her to the southern gate. You will want to let her win, but don't make it easy. Run (don't sprint) as fast as you can behind her, zigzagging if you get too close. You'll then be transported back to her home where Fournival will thank you for a job well done. Talk to Symone before you leave and she will hand you the Golden Idol.

[Classes]

This information was taken from the unofficial wikia.

Basic vocations are the first tier of the nine available vocations. They are unique to each other and each one provides various strengths. Basic vocations can eventually be upgraded to Advanced vocations.

There are three Basic vocations available:

Fighter - The Fighter focuses on the combination of sword and shield abilities.
Strider - The Strider uses a combination of daggers and bows and is capable of performing a double-jump.
Mage - The Mage uses a variety of magic and is the only vocation that can use curative magic.

Advanced vocations are the second tier of the available nine vocations in Dragon's Dogma. They are more powerful versions of the Basic vocations and can combine to achieve Hybrid vocations.

The available Advanced vocations are:

Warrior - A more powerful version of the Fighter that focuses on two-handed weapons.
Ranger - A more powerful version of the Strider that focuses on longbows.
Sorcerer - A more powerful version of the Mage that focuses on offensive magick.

Hybrid vocations are the last tier of the nine vocations in Dragon's Dogma. As the name implies, Hybrid vocations combine aspects of the three Advanced vocations. Only your main character, the Arisen, is able to become a Hybrid vocation.

There are three Hybrid vocations available:

Mystic Knight - The Mystic Knight combines aspects of the Warrior and Sorcerer, and is the only class that can use magick shields.
Magick Archer - The Magick Archer combines aspects of the Ranger and Sorcerer, and is the only class that can use magick bows.
Assassin - The Assassin combines aspects of the Ranger and Warrior, and has no unique weapons but can use a large variety of other weapons.

What sorts of skills do Assassins rock? Maybe if I take my currently-Strider to Assassin that'll be more entertaining for me.

They don't get access to the specific weapons of the advanced classes, but they can use the largest variety of weapons - bows, daggers, swords and shields. They have poison arrows, invisibility, instant-kill counters, huge bonuses to night combat, and so forth.

So the weapon pack kinda blows...

I mean, it might be good for a class you havent used yet with weapons you havent upgraded. The amount of gold and mats needed to upgrade the weapons is rediculous as well...

it's not exactly a game with lots of tactical decision-making or a game where being a really skilled player can let you come out of a big battle unscathed.

It is exactly a game with lots of tactical decision making (that you are clearly not doing) and it is also a game where being a really skilled player lets you come out of a big battle unscathed regardless of items or stats.

I'm completely disagreeing with you here. I negate your statement utterly. Total rejection.

I think based on their animation what they are doing is taking off the helmet to stop the horrible ringing in their head that is coming from somebody repeatedly drumming on it. Cos they're kind of dumb.

At least that's what I like to think. BONG BONG BONG BONG.

One thing I am really enjoying with Fighter is how useful skyward lash is on boss monsters. After you've put an ogre down on his knees I duck in under his belly and skyward lash his guts open. This doesn't do a lot of damage on each individual hit but in terms of damage per second vs stamina usage its easily one of the best fighter moves for putting the hurt on big things. It works on anything big enough for the hitbox to connect. You get like 8 hits? Or something like that, for each stamina cost. Sometimes you gotta take out some armor pieces but that's easy enough on a fighter because your normal attack is so fast you can just keep rebounding on the piece until it comes off. If you are standing in the right place he can't grab you or hit you with any attacks.

And it looks horrible. Like really really mean and nasty and cruel.

It hits everywhere on a chimera since they're so big. Probably would work well on a griffins wings when it was on the ground.

Also coming from a warrior with knockdown augment burst strike is even more amazing than it is normally. I haven't encountered anything it cant knock down. I remember it not knocking down a few things before. This is no longer the case.

Quite a few of my warrior augments are coming in really handy on fighter.

Also this is just a personal thing but the animation for cymbal onslaught is <3

So it's leg-up, early game stuff? Did you pick up the pack and try them out, or are you speculating based on stats?

No, i bought the pack. I compared Zombiebane to my current non upgraded wooden tower sheild and it was worse. Upgraded it to level 3, it cost me ~197,000 gold and 10 shrouds, but now its useable.

The fighter shield and the one hander were also worse than the non upgraded iron shield and cutlass my pawn has.

No, the Amazon preorder weapons were just some really early non-unique weapons for the starting professions at upgrade 2. These are unique with 'Bonus damage to X" creature but really underwhelming stats.

Man, I ended up starting over because I was frustrated by a few things that I just completely messed up on. It didn't bother me at all other than the fact that Caprica lost all her knowledge and ratings, which were really good. She raked in a lot of RC every day. It's really telling of how well they did the pawn system, I often care more about her than I do my character.

Would some of you dudes mind throwing me a bone and renting her out for a bit? She's low level, but having her with extra knowledge and etc to catch back up would help a lot. I have a lot of you friended already, but it's Waltz for Venus on xbox live.

So true. My first thought when i find or buy new gear is getting Apsalar kitted out properly so that she will be effective for others. Only after that do I worry about the main. When money was tight, my well equipped pawn was serving her hobo master.

I really hope, if there's a sequel, that we get three character slots, but each character only has one save slot. After beating this, I'd really like to start a new character instead of a NG+ but I also don't want to lose all the stuff I've already done.

Groovy. I'll hit the inn when I log in tonight, and grab your new girl.

Let me know if you can think of anything I should do with Jill. She's tearing stuff up in my game, but I don't know how that translates to everyone else.

She has been pretty solid so far, she seems to know when to get in close and when to stay away, which is the biggest problem I have with most archer type characters, they're often too obsessed with staying far away so they never get many hits in. She's not afraid to jump on a big monster which is helpful.
