I'd put Batman: Earth One under the Batman family as it is both very good and directly designed for new readers

also Blue Beetle under Other but that is just personal taste

I tried not to have too many origin retellings, just for simplicity's sake. Do you think Earth One would be better than Year One?

    Hmmmm

    yes and no

Year One is a classic for a reason and I do love it

but Earth One is definitely more modern and new reader friendly, in addition to being more in line with the current popular version of Batman

I think I'll leave Year One there at least until Earth One shows up on Comixology

also, does Catwoman appear in Earth One? if she's not a prostitute that's at least one point in Earth One's favor

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular
She does not. The only major female character is Barbara Gordon, who is the sole bright light in James Gordon's pretty shitty life.

Read the first four issues of Saga recently. Its phenomenal. Recommend me some other things!

My library includes sandman, walking dead, y: the last man, lxg, watchmen, and some batman, xmen, hulk, thor here and there.

How is ex machina? Read the first volume and thought it was alright. Should I keep with it?

The first two trades were excellent but I wasnt a fan of the stuff I saw after it. Maybe I didn't give it a fair shake though?

And yes, I forgot to mention that this is a great list, the work put into it is much appreciated. I've been dipping slowly back into Marvel stuff and will likely refer to the recommendations.

Oh, speaking of Marvel, how's about Wolverine and the X-Men? That's been getting lots of praise around these parts.

I'd toss in The Goon as a suggestion as well but I'm a book or two behind and not sure how it currently is.

This is a separate post just about Thanos, since I figure people might be getting curious about him.

If you want to know what Thanos is all about, these are the four stories to read!

Marvel Masterworks: Captain Marvel, Vol. 3 - After a few years in hiatus, mighty Marvel's space-born super hero returned, and under the aegis of writer/artist Jim Starlin, his story would achieve a scale never before imagined! Stripping the Kree Captain down to his very core and forcing him through a gauntlet of past opponents, Starlin then brought to the fore one of Marvel's pre-eminent cosmic menaces for the very first time: the mad Titan, Thanos. With the stage set and the players from unearthly entity Eon to Drax the Destroyer and the mighty Avengers pulled into fray, the good Captain led the fight against Thanos in a confrontation that would redefine superhero epics forever! (Amazon)

Rebirth of Thanos - The quest that led to Infinity Gauntlet begins here! Back from the dead, Thanos is after the power to bring the rest of the universe with him on a return trip! Can the Silver Surfer, Drax the Destroyer and others stop the cosmic iconoclast before he uses reality as a token of his affection for Death? (Amazon, Comixology)

Infinity Gauntlet - It's the Avengers, the New Warriors, the X-Men and more against the omnipotent Eternal, Thanos! The Mad Titan has become the most powerful being in the universe, and enslavement or destruction may be the only choices he gives it! (Amazon, Comixology)

The Thanos Imperative - The dangerous cosmic fissure known as The Fault has ripped opened a portal to the Marvel Universe, spilling out the demented forces of a horrific mirror universe where there is no death and life prevails unchecked - the Cancerverse! From this dark realm, the evil Lord Mar-Vell - a twisted version of the legendary Captain Marvel - leads his army to claim our universe for their own! Nova, the Silver Surfer, Quasar, Gladiator and more of the greatest cosmic champions of the Marvel Universal rise to stop them, but when even they cannot stop the forces of the Cancerverse, the fate of the universe lies in the hands of the cosmos' never-say-die underdogs, the Guardians of the Galaxy! Facing a threat like none other, Star-Lord and company cook up an all-or-nothing plan to bring their prisoner, the mad titan Thanos, into the Cancerverse to unleash hell! With everything on the line, the fate of the universe rests in the hands of one of Marvel's greatest villains! (Amazon, Comixology)

Knowing the tropes and history of comics can help, but I think the book holds up pretty well on its own as well.

It'd be worse if you didn't know about the Cold War and mutually assured destruction.

This is a pretty dark book, however, I found it pretty good.

Legends: The Enchanted - Violently ripped from the pages of folklore come the Enchanted. Supernatural immortals living in a dark, steampunk, creature-infested world where nature, technology and foul magic are in constant conflict. When the twisted, burnt remains of the half-wooden, half-mechanical warrior, Pinocchio are discovered, wolf hunter Red Hood and giant killer Jack realize the fragile rules of their existence have been shattered. With the help of other powerful Enchanted (the mercenary, Goldilocks and psychic exterminators, Hansel and Gretel), Jack and Red team up on an adventure to stop whatever, or whoever is destroying their powers and murdering their kind.

    Amazon
    Comixology

This is a little lighter. Standard drama/investigation fare. Fun character in Dex.
Stumptown - Dex is the proprietor of Stumptown Investigations, and a fairly talented P.I. Unfortunately, she's less adept at throwing dice than solving cases. Her recent streak has left her beyond broke-she's into the Confederated Tribes of the Wind Coast for 18 large. But maybe Dex's luck is about to change. Sue-Lynne, head of the Wind Coast's casino operation, will clear Dex' debt if she can locate Sue-Lynne's missing granddaughter. But is this job Dex's way out of the hole or a shove down one much much deeper?

So this Marvel Now thing is really intriguing me, and I'm looking to get caught up on what I've missed in the Marvel Universe. The last thing I read was Civil War. Any mandatory arcs I need to hit? Anything in TPB format would be ideal, I've got some Amazon gift cards to go through.

From recommendations in the OP, I was thinking about picking up The Thanos Imperative (...and 1602 and Infinity Gauntlet, because I missed them before). Are the Secret Invasion / Dark Reign arcs any good? Anything I'm missing? I'll probably pick up the AvX arc once it hits TPB, too.

Thanos Imperative is indeed awesome, but I recommend going with Annihilation first instead, as Thanos Imperative was the end point of a long and awesome Cosmic series.

If you want to get caught up on what's going on right now with Avengers vs. X-Men, this is what you want to read:

X-Men: Messiah Complex - Introduces Hope, the Mutant Messiah
X-Men: Second Coming - Hope returns, now a teenager
X-Men: Schism - The X-Men split into two groups, one led by Wolverine, the other by Cyclops
Avengers: The Children's Crusade - The return of the Scarlet Witch

Now, if you wanted to save some money, I ran across this book in B&N the other day: Avengers vs. X-Men: It's Coming, which contains excerpts from all those stories to get you up to speed for Avengers vs. X-Men.

This isn't really mandatory, but I would really recommend Wolverine and the X-Men, which is the book that follows the school that Wolverine builds. It is a really good, fun book.

Personally, with most events, I find myself liking some of the tie-ins better than the main storyline. Like with Secret Invasion, Secret Invasion: Captain Britain and Secret Invasion: Thor are both really fun. Dark Reign wasn't really an event, in that it didn't have a main storyline, but Secret Warriors is a fantastic series that started during that time period. Highly recommended if you like superhero superspy action.

Thanks WiseManTobes! Is there a middle part part I should pick up - after Annihilation but before Thanos Imperative?

The Middle is where it gets a little tricky, Annihilation Conquest starts right after, but after Conquest it gets a little crossover-heavy ( and hard to find after conquest )
But it's after Conquest that Guardians of the Galaxy's series starts during/post War of Kings/Realm of Kings, both crossing into those events and having a few of it's own, until everything finally culminates in Thanos Imperative

Nova runs thru Cosmic from beginning to end for the most part also.

Marvel really needs to release an Essential Cosmic.

Edit: Found this, to help/explain how the middle gets a little , well, loaded with comics heh.
