Well it's an RNG thing that worries me. All the seering and vig secret or most of them could easily be contributed by the mafia and not end up in mafia hands. A day mafia dying day 1 would have plenty of incentive to void them all and could add one or two fellow mafia held secrets to the list. Grats you have several people without powers and one or two of them are mafia, so you can't trust any of them until you either get all the mafia in the group or confirm the villagers.

On the other hand the village network head could have everyone submit the secret they hold and the one they wrote to see if anyone is lying.

I think the secret mechanic should be more focused on using the secrets and set it up so that people can use their knowledge of what was written to invalidate secrets. The host would probably needs to add a handful of secrets to the pot to ensure that a savvy network head couldn't make a list of what people wrote to find mafia.

    On Post Restriction:

I honestly had no idea that such a thing could be construed as 'racist' and if something that I did in effect upset, offended, or similar hurt people, i do apologize. It was meant to be entertaining and fun. If you want to bitch about it, then PM me, but the only thing you'll get from me is another apology and my saying what I am here. I had no idea that it could be seen as racist or offensive. It has honestly never crossed my mind that it was such.

    On Burning Secrets:

My first reaction when i woke up and saw spool doing that was 'ohgod no' But then i remembered my personal #1 rule of hosting which is 'do not interfere when you set the ball in motion'. Plus, by the time I woke up, he'd already burnt through 3 or 4 of them and there was no way for me to go to him and say "knock if off you jerk" without influencing the game even MORE. Plus the fact that most of the ones he had outed were already invalidated by dead people. I think only one was still in the game and that was Sunkist's. I think.

    On Double-Tapping

In almost all of my past games (and yes this is where I'm forcing you to rely on metagame, deal with it) you were able to double-tap a kill to go through a guard.

    On Secrets in general:

Even if the secrets had all been burnt up in the beginning of the game with the suggestion that everybody just post theirs in the thread, then this would still have been a vanilla game. The only adjustments I would have made was to move the mafia from having 3 kills to 2 kills. You guys were free to make that happen, if you had really wanted to. I'm grateful that you didn't.

    Overall:

I hope everybody had fun. I'll probably take a short break, but I might do another vanilla flavored phalla at some point in the future. Probably whenever there isn't a main ready in the wings. I am the emergency phalla.

Sidenote:: Bad Vanillaforums. Every time I run a game something happens. Last main before this that I ran was when we did the switch to vanilla. Now maintenance and then the jdarkocalypse. Ahava is not pleased.

had the mafia put 2 kills on kime, that would have overwhelmed the guard and killed kime.

Basically putting 2 kills on one target.

    Ah, thx.
But then i remembered my personal #1 rule of hosting which is 'do not interfere when you set the ball in motion'.

This should be written in the Phalla Master's Guide, available at you local hobby store.

It's pretty much my own #1 rule.

Once the game starts, answer clarifications, but do nothing that might interfere with how the players react to the game. Especially no conversation with players in the thread.

Well, that was my fault, then. People in the mafia proboards were actively arguing for that particular strategy, but my experience as a mafia had always been the opposite (a guarded target was guarded, no matter how many kill attempts they were hit with) so I talked them out of it. Oops. Ah well, at least it didn't cost us anything in the end.

Before I ran my first main, this was the number one thing Egos told me as well.

I think it is a very very very good rule.

That is what Blarney and I always try to explain.

It is much more important to host well, than to design a good game.

Keep things moving, keep things updated, don't interfere, don't disappear.

If your game is a steaming unbalanced piece then you'll still see "thanks for hosting!"

Yeah, that was my #1 takeaway from hosting my phalla as well, and something Munkus hammered into me whenever I was going crazy.

Always be a clockmaker, never interfere.

It is good (the best) advice.

If you look back at Green's game based on "The World Ends With You" you can see a perfect example of a game that was hosted well but balanced horribly.

I also don't know how you host poorly, other than just skipping days.

    From our PMs:

"Oh, and never EVER 'quote for truth'

If you answered it, ignore the question or say 'already answered'. If you don't want to answer, 'Clarification denied.' Collect your clarifications in the OP to help.

But part of how people play the game is to obfuscate the truth, so highlighting someone's mistakes in logic (or lies in some cases) hurts their play. Try to do as little hand holding as possible."

sorry about the late reply on this everyone, my internet was cut on tuesday and i just got it back.

    so, my thoughts:

first, @Mill - you said you suspected me as mafia, i would like to know when you started? i know it wasnt on day 1 when there was that nonsense bandwagon..

secondly, i was actually a little disappointed at first when i got the mafia role. and more and more with every day 1 vote because of my long name. which was so annoying.. you didnt actually have to use it ever, so why did everybody hate it so damn much??

it was especially crappy cause i had planned (pre-role) to contact anyone with a 'noble/honorable' sounding name and turn it into a game of nobles/common folk/mafia. just for shits and giggles. then i got the mafia role and decided to go with it anyways.

then i realized that there were like 3 other mafia in the list i compiled. but i decided to go for it anyways.

then when the day 1 long name wagon came calling, i leaned on that soft network to help me out of my jam. people like alegis and greenbarons helped greatly to keeping me alive. and OS wanted to talk too, and he happened to have my secret. i explained to him that it was just flavor and he helped me out too. still, i was looking like i was about to die.

i decided to try and claim a special, and landed on a guard. i was actually planning on getting my team to withhold a kill to back up my claim - except they didnt know we had 3 kills per night so no one would have bought it.

i told my noble soft network that i was a guard and that if the votes continued to pile on me i was going to claim it to the thread. also OS. i told them all that i couldnt guard myself and thats why i didnt actually want to come out.

then langley saved my life before i had to, and kime became the head of the network.

i gambled on a 'true' special, rather then a odd/even special, and clearly infidel had me right away. then, after the kill on infidel slipped through, i panicked.

there were still a few people alive in my noble network who knew i claimed as a guard. worse, there was a dead mafia in the noble network.

anyone still alive in the noble network should have been able to look at that and say 'i think psolms is not actually a guard'. also, if any of them had told anyone else still alive the members of that soft network, after everyone except the mafia in it died, they would have had cayrus and TRV by the short curlys.

so i called the kill on the remaining living from there and the rest is history.

just a little story from my point of view. im amazed i lived as long as i did, knowing that infidel was gunning for me (correctly).

im still upset that i was a target from day 1 because of a pre-game choice, but i got my vindication.

also, i know that it upset a lot of people to watch spool burn the secrets away, but i was laughing my ass off the whole damn day. if the network was as coordinated as we thought they would be, that would have been one of the only ways to stay in the game. we all seriously thought that there was no reason not to tell kime your secret and the one you made - and that he had a list, and a guard every night that was 'clarification denied' whether we could break through it (no point wasting 2 kills when there are so so many other villagers who need to die) we were seriously afraid of the village.

kime for honorary mafia this game :P

and thanks for running ahava. it was fun and terrifying and exciting all at once.

and grudge on TrueNeverBorn for almost blindly killing me as a mafia on day 1 because of a friggen pre-game choice.

seriously. i worked way harder then i had to on day 1. and all it got me was an open shot on a village confirmed infidel. which.. well thats pretty good. consider it a single day 1 grudge TNB.

edit: forgot to mention, i gave myself a post restriction of trying to sound like an english noblemen in the thread, and writing in letter format in private messages.

I would have thought that one of the other people that were publicly seered would have taken over the reigns. Since I was obviously busy and doing poorly (although we did get several behind-the-scenes mafia kills, which was nice). But I guess they were all busy/not willing to take over too :(.

I put too much faith in kime, despite knowing that he was busy. I passed on my suspicions about psolms and told kime everything that I knew up to that point. I also passed on the fact that they were pushing really hard to kill TZ and that he was prob a good target to not worry about and consider as village.

I'm actually really sad that kime got public seered when he did. Despite Psolms being mafia, I was having a lot of fun RP'ing as General Nash in PM's with him. Once kime took over as network head, I told psolms I was basically going to let Kime give him orders and let kime give me orders, and that there wasn't much point for us to continue speaking strategy.

There was really no way for me to know which guard fucked up, since I was under the impression that there were several and that one of the secrets was also a guard. I expected the network to weed through Psolms lies, so I don't feel bad about not being more vocal in getting him eliminated.

I still stand by my defense of him on Day 1. I will never support a bandwagon that is based on fluff. You guys just got lucky that he also happened to be mafia.

I look forward to more soft networking with you in the future psolms. We know the risks and benefits of soft networks, and I don't feel particularly taken advantage of or burned :)

I also wasn't super pissed about losing my secret. Its effect would have been ambiguous. It is hard to appropriately use a secret that you aren't sure if it will end up as a kill or a roleblock.

  • MillMill Registered User regular
@psolms it wasn't so much that you did something mafia like, I was never convinced that the bandwagons on day one hadn't targeted a mafia. That and I thought people were a little too eager to swap over to langly when he voided someone's secret, I get the rational for why he got voted out but I think there would have been less people switching off of the first two bandwagons if neither leader was mafia. Retaba coming up green pretty much convinced my gut that either you or TNB had to be mafia because you had a villager tying things and the mafia would have zero reason to break that tie if no mafia was being targeted. Tie goes through, two villagers die and Retaba easily eats the vote for doing it. It was mostly a gut feeling though.

If I were more confident in mafia radar, I probably would have either killed you or TNB on night 1, just to see what happens. Unfortunately, I wasn't confident in it and was also worried that offing psolms as a vig would draw attention to me given my earlier joke. I have no idea whether the mistake with my secret helped or hurt me in the long run.
