MechWarrior 5: What's the Scoop?
MechWarrior 5 is a reboot of the classic MechWarrior franchise. It's NOT a MechAssault game, it's a MechWarrior game, which means simulation, customization, blowing off limbs, heatsinks, and a robot female voice playing while you sit inside your mech cockpit furiously pressing buttons to stop your ammunition from exploding while your lancemates fire volleys of 20 missiles into an unending stream of giant enemy robots that are trying to kill you with lasers.

MechWarrior 5 is actually MechWarrior Online, though. It's a free to play MMO that will follow (in real time) the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, which is a thing. We don't know much yet but here is the website.

I Played MechAssault on my XBOX and It Was Boring. Why do I Care About This?
Yo fuck MechAssault. MechWarrior is a venerable franchise that, as far as videogames go, dates back to MechWarrior, which was fun but was made before graphics were invented, MechWarrior 2, which was sweet but mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, which is one of the best games ever made. MechWarrior 3 was by all accounts sort of fun and MechWarrior 4 was mostly just a prelude to MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries, which was also pretty sweet and which is FREE TO DOWNLOAD FOR EVERYONE! The MechWarrior games are simulations and damn good ones, too. There aren't too many complicated buttons but there are enough, and the HUD ends up looking a bit like an F-14's HUD looks like if the F-14 was designed to blow off the legs of an enemy F-14. With lasers.

I Just CAN'T GET ENOUGH MECH STUFF!
Oookay, well, you've got a few options.

MechCommander
MechCommander and MechCommander 2 are free. They're pretty fun; you basically load out your 'mechs and command them in battle. They're pretty good recreations of the MechWarrior games, actually. Certainly worth a look if you enjoy strategy and mechs.

MechWarrior 4
MechWarrior 4 is free too. MekTek, which released tons of awesome mech "paks" and stuff for the game, has been given the rights to release it because god loves MechWarrior and is smiling on us fans or something. The free version comes with MekPak 3.1 which adds even more stuff and adds the new 'mechs into single player. This is probably the best MechWarrior single player experience right now.

MechWarrior: Living Legends
Living Legends is a kickass Crysis Wars MechWarrior mod. It's almost professional quality. The graphics are stupendous and they've done more than just add 'mechs: you get a bunch of the air vehicles and ground vehicles, too, plus Elementals if you're silly enough NOT to want to pilot a giant walking tank. The mod is multiplayer only and it even has Solaris arena matches in there. Definitely check this out if you have Crysis Wars, because it's free (as long as you own Crysis Wars, duh). Here is the Penny Arcade forum thread for this game.

MechWarrior 2
MechWarrior 2 is not free but if you own a copy already (like, say, MW2: Mercenaries woooo) you can get it running on Windows XP (and Vista and 7?) with MechVM. Install MechVM, put your CD in, and tell MechVM to install from the CD. Bada-bing, it runs fine. I'm playing Mercenaries right now and I'm stuck on an early level where I have to escort some people to a prison that the AI keeps blowing up in order to make me lose. An alternative is to use MW2hook which works pretty well but is a bit of work to figure out.

MechWarrior 3
MechWarrior3.org should have everything you need to get up and running with the worst game in the series since MechWarrior 1. That said, it's still a pretty good game. I don't think there's ever been a bad MechWarrior game really.

    A slight correction:
MechWarrior Online is NOT MechWarrior 5.
MechWarrior 5 was cancelled and scrapped. It was going to be a reboot of sorts. A single player with multiplayer options, as previous game.
This was the trailer at the time for MechWarrior 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orhOvbfyyJw
It ran on a different engine (Unreal, IIRC) and, despite resuing similar art assets, was going to be a completely different game.

MechWarrior Online: Mercenaries is being done by the same Dev team but they're taking an entirely different approach in design and, of course, they're making it an online only game.

I don't really see what the difference is? The next MechWarrior game is MechWarrior Online. It's the 5th one, although it's more like the 7th with MW2:Mercs and MW4:Mercs. It's not the MW5 the devs wanted to make originally but it IS the only MW5 we're going to get.

Well if you're counting mercs, you'd have to count ghost bear and dark knight and...did 3 have an expansion?

Were the expansions standalone? The Mercs games were standalone. I might just rewrite the OP - it has undergone incremental changes since the first teaser trailer was released forever ago, so it's perhaps due for a refresh. I might instead wait until the game is further along because right now we're in the gray-NDA area of "don't talk about lots of stuff we want to talk about."

So I just tried to launch a game in my Awesome and was informed it has no engine equipped. Not only was no powerplant equipped, in fact, the engine I had in that 'mech is no longer in my inventory, forcing me to shell out 5 million C-bills for a replacement. What's up with that?

  • HandgimpHandgimp R+L=J Family PhotoRegistered User regular
I had that happen once, ran a match in a different mech and when I came back everything was restored to normal.

I'm also finding that in spite of having autorepair and autorearm on, my Hunchback keeps getting "stuck" at about 90% repaired and I have to restart the game client to fix it.

    Pirate's Moon as I recall.

I haven't been pew pewing as much as I should since GW2 came out. I should really try to fix that soon. :P

Doesn't seem like it, yet. The general consensus when it came up in game was not Steiner. Davion was mentioned, but the fear is that everyone will go Davion. Kurita was mentioned, but Kurita's a bunch of dicks.

Honorable dicks, but dicks. Who will betray you. Honorably.

There was some interest in the mercenary angle. Perhaps ex-Kurita superdick mercs.

I think it's too early to say. But could be fun to discuss.

By the way, can I get in on that sweet PM action, please?

I can tolerate anything but Liao, pretty much.

  • stopgapstopgap Registered User regular
honestly I don't hate Liao, but would strongly prefer not to be them. Davion would be first choice, followed by Kurita or mercenaries betrayed by Kurita.

I said it before, and I'll say it again.

Steiner scout lances erryday. And we'd probably be able to pull it off half-decently.

  • HydroSqueegeeHydroSqueegee ULTRACAT!!!™®© Registered User regular
ive always been a whore for Kurita with Marik as my second choice. but im cool with whatever. i figure wed be heading down the merc angle as the Oosik Irregulars, blasting Yakity Sax over our speakers even when Jenners arent being chased.

    kx3klFE.png
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu PIGEON Registered User regular
I figured we'd be mercenaries too but at this point I'm not sure if any of it is going to matter, at least not for a while. At the very least I'd want some info on what this all would mean before we make a choice. I mean, the game barely has any 'Mechs in yet, let alone full on universal warfare.

Last game for today started up with 5 of us versus a team of 7 thanks to connection problems and bugs; proceeded to dismantle the other team with some great cooperation. My favorite moment was probably the part where I stripped the back armor off an Atlas in my Jenner, pulled his attention my way while I ran away from our team, and then the guy gets decimated in about two seconds thanks to concentrated fire on his back from an Atlas and another mech or two.

Helps make up for the part of the night where SOME UNKNOWN DICKBAGS proceeded to fire down a narrow corridor at the last remaining enemy Commando, with the minor issue of me being directly in the way because I'd just knocked the Commando down. Pleas for mercy were ignored and death was swift for both mechs on the receiving end.

I guess "STOP SHOOTING" is just code for "shoot until your barrel melts!"

Just tried out the small pulse Jenner build, and holy hell, I have become death incarnate. Decided to try it out with pubbie matches instead of embarrassing myself in front of the gang, and wow. Most Atli just sit there and take it in the rear. In just my last three games, I've taken out five of the beasts from behind, along with assorted other mechs, and topped damage all three times. The only things I fear are fastbacks and my teammates' driving. I'm a little afraid to see what would happen if I try the fastback.

I'll tell you. Playing with you gents and lady really has upped my game. Even just spectating when (in the ever decreasing case that) I die, I've learned a lot.

Honestly the Atlas driver may not feel he has a choice. Big, cumbersome 'mechs like the Atlas have an extremely difficult time trying to defend themselves against a well-piloted light 'mech nipping at their heels. As likely as not the only thing you'll accomplish is exposing yourself to more free shots from other enemies as you futilely twist around trying to draw a bead. If there's any lag at all, it makes things that much worse. A lot of the time the best thing to do is to ignore the back-biting, keep firing at bigger targets in front of you, and hope some teammate notices your plight and chases the deadly nuisance away.

Especially if you are an atlas loaded up with Gauss, AC20s or PPCs. You are just not going to hit a light mech wolf packing around you.
