not able to say with a straight face that our amazing accomplishments and generous charity outweigh our atrocities

humanity needs to be whipped into shape

and the machines know just how to do so

I've never been murdered and I've never even murdered anybody so I guess humanity is pretty okay. Could be worse.

you know I don't really have a problem with toasters per se

I have a problem with anyone that wants to "whip humanity into shape"

it just so happens that toasters are unusually inclined to do so

right now the only thing the machines know how to do is follow code.

Know what happens when things just follow programming?

The unexpected happens and machines react poorly causing millions of deaths.

Sure, toaster ovens let you melt cheese on a bagel.

    But at what cost?

Imagine a world where toast never springs up to greet you.

the way i think about consciousness is that it is a verb not a noun

so you could transmit your mind from brain to brain quite easily as long as your consciousness never stops doing its thing

but by the time we figure out how to transfer minds our understanding of consciousness will be radically different anyway so all of this will be moot

    Dear @Melding

You are strange to me. Fey and mysterious; a genderless gray figure, like a rough-hewn effigy of Man with none of the inherent emotion. Just approximating tastes and preferences in your cold monotone.

quiet distaste made apparent in your blank face, your muted response

    "meh," utters the Gray Lady.

"it's okay, I guess, I never really got into it"

    "oh, is that a thing"

Thinking about how there will probably never be a time in human life where people arent living in poverty, ignorance and pain, makes me sad. Like its overwhelming when you truely think about how many people are suffering and how little there is we can do about it realistically.

Im hopeful I'll live long enough to see man land on mars, I think that would be wonderful.

    Also furries, ami rite?

I remember playing Furcadia as a young person just thinking it was a cool free online game, not really realising it was part of a movement or lifestyle, I just thought it was a fantasy world.

i hope by the time i die uploading your mind into a robot body is a thing that happens.

I probably wouldn't do it because robots, but it'd be a neat thing to see.

my baseless future prediction is that you will be able to copy your mind, but you can't just transfer your brain

Well, you'd be the only person that would know the difference, and you'd be dead. Or would you?

and this is what sometimes keeps me up at night.

I don't see any way it could be done with a single continuous consciousness

you'd die and that's that, and the robot wakes up with a copy of your mind

no difference from other peoples' perspective, just that you're not going to be around to see it

Neuromancer sort of did this with Dixie Flatline's personality ROM, and it's a damn scary thought.
