Also, get an endocrinologist if you don’t have one yet.

on the upside, maybe you'll end up like my wife (type-1 diabetic) who metabolizes alcohol so quickly that one drink is enough to get her in a happy place. (it also makes it hard to tell if her sugars are going low so caution is still required) but think of all the money you'd save! (to spend on test strips)

    I'm bad at upsides.

I learned most of what I know about diabetes from the babysitters club books and Stacy
And later when both grandpas were diagnosed with it and also my dad a few years later so I'm guessing it runs in the family

That is a lot of beer and you might be an alcoholic but that doesn't mean it caused your diabetes. In fact I don't believe there is any medical or scientific evidence directly relating the two.

That is unless you drink so much beer that it also lead to obesity.

I thought I had diabetes in high school because I peed all the time and scrubs said that was a symptom

But I realized I was drinking at least a gallon of water a day and peeing can happen

I don't think I'm an alcoholic. I mean, the definition changes depending on where you look, but I don't ever crave it unless I'm playing multi-player video games. I know that sounds weird, but I find playing multi-player video games to be quite stressful. Having a few beers helped calm me down.

Unfortunately, being a single dude, that "few beers" started to increase slowly over the past few years until I found myself drinking about 16 beers on both Friday and Saturday while playing 6 hour long multi-player sessions. That kind of became my routine, and I'm a huge fan of routine.

Weird how things can start off fairly insignificant, and they slowly spiral to the point of absurdity.

Regardless, I still don't think I'm an alcoholic, but I'm going to stay away from multi-player games for awhile. Hello Hitman and Skyward Sword.

My cousin got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was 7, she's been dealing with it for almost 13 years now. You gonna let a little girl show you up?!

Maybe. My first goal is two weeks sober. On October 1st, if I've failed, then I'm going to seek out some AA meetings.

I pretty frequently think this. I've checked out my blood glucose a fair amount and it's always around 5mm which I know means nothing without a regular check, but eh. Makes me feel better about eating sugary crap all the time!

I go through this cycle pretty much whenever diabetes and the symptoms therein are brought up, purely based on peeing a lot and being tired sometimes

Look, forget what Stale said. What you need is homeopathic, all natural remedies. I bet that insulin was built in a lab, not ripped from the pancreas of healthier men. Do you really want foreign unnatural chemicals coursing through your veins? What you need is this all natural fish oil. You know it's on the level because fish don't get diabetes. That's a fact. And all of us evolved from fish, really, so this will bring your core back closer to its primal nature. Which is really important, because you are diabetic.

Sounds like the best thing to do (other then exercising and watching your diet as Stale and others said) is to just stop playing multiplayer games so much and doing anything else that is so stressful it drives you to drink. Do that and you would probably see the amount that you drink naturally cut itself down to an acceptable level (and if not, just make some more adjustments, maybe only drink a bit on weekends).

Straight up giving up drinking might do more harm then good as you make other changes. Moderation should be the name of the game.

My girlfriend's mother is a pretty full on career hippy. She's told me horror stories about growing up in that house.

Like at one point, for six months or so, her mother decided that salt and pepper and sauces were really bad for you. So the only condiments allowed in the house were ground up seaweed and cayenne.

Also they grew wheat in the back yard, and they used to make flour by grinding up the wheat in a coffee grinder. When she was 20 and living out of home, she made her mother pancakes using normal white flour and baking soda and sugar, and her mother freaked out like HOW ARE THESE SO GOOD???

First off, calm down and breathe. You're type-II and young. You are fine provided you make some relatively (in the grand scheme of things) minor changes to your lifestyle.

Now, odds are good you have these images of amputations and dialysis and blindness and OHH GOD running through your head. Stop it, you're being a little bitch.

You lucked out. Type-II is very, very controllable and provided you aren't an idiot, those things won't happen for the next 60 years or so. By then you'll be so old and broken down who the fuck cares?

For your diet, you need to learn to control your carbs. Carbs are everything. Keep in mind, your body operates on one kind of fuel, sugar, and everything, to one degree or another breaks down to fuel your cells. Obviously gummi bears and wheat bread break down to very different kinds/concentrations of sugar, but in the end, they are the same shit.

The next few weeks you need to start testing your blood, a lot. Learn your chemistry. Learn what your ratios are. Everyone is different. How your body reacts to a bowl of rice is different than how mine does, or how Dru's does, or how your nutritionist's does. The only way to learn is by observing and taking notes. Get a decent meter, and get a decent journal. You won't have to keep as close an eye on things forever, just until you learn your chemistry.

Test strips are expensive. Welcome to earth. This is not a cheap disease. Deal with it.

And yes, you can drink, yes you can eat what you want. You want a beer or two? no problem, just realize that those carbs have to come from somewhere else in your diet. It's all a balancing act. The sugar from booze will burn hot and quick, while the sugar from say, rice will burn low and slow. You'll learn this when you learn your chemistry.

Sound annoying? it is. Welcome to earth.

Now, take another deep breath and thank whatever God you choose that you aren't type-I.

    This. A thousand times, this.

Type 1 Diabetes is a very shitty lot in life.

I've had it for 8 years and so far it hasn't really kicked my ass, mostly just kind of exhausted me with dealing with all of the maintenance. But it's just a countdown to when the more serious side affects start wearing on me.

Also, I found out about my condition considerably worse off, when I was probably hours away from slipping into a diabetic coma, with a sugar level of 950.

I had ever symptom on the chart, and didn't bother seeing a doctor for weeks because I was a fucking moron and didn't think anything of it.

Fatalspoon, you can take a small measure of relief that you are not me.

Late to the party, but yeah, there's a lot of good advice in here. Like everyone has said, becoming aware of what you put into your body is going to become a big part of your life now. It's almost second nature to me now-- I've been Type-1 for... 25 years now? Just be mindful, educate yourself, and take care of yourself. I was non-compliant back when I was in my early teens, and reaching for 28 now I've got the minor beginnings of Neuropathy in my feet and legs; it sucks and it's going to get worse. Like Stale said, bread is just as bad if not worse than sugar, because starch is a polymer of glucose and breaks down into glucose.

I've pretty much got my endo and nutritionist on speed dial, so it's really not out of the question to become friends with these people. It's really manageable, just so long as you're responsible about it. It's a lot of work, but getting control of it early is pretty key in making sure your future doesn't suck hard. You said you like routine, so eventually doing whatever you need to do will just become second-hand nature. Get some good support from the people closest to you, and check your blood sugar all the time; you can never check enough if you're ever not sure.
