Victor Borge was born on January 19th 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His parents were both musicians. Victor took after his mother and learned the piano, taking to it like a natural. At the age of 9, he was awarded a full ride scholarship to the Royal Danish Academy of Music.

AND THEN, WAR!

Victor was in Sweden when the Nazis took over his home country. He was able to slip out to Finland and from there, with only 20 bucks in his pocket, escaped to the US on the very last neutral ship that managed to leave the country during WWII.

Bringing with him his expert piano skills and his unusual style of blending it with comedy, he was able to teach himself English by watching movies. His talents were quickly recognized by America and soon he was working with the likes of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra before getting his own television show in 1946.

Since then, and right up until his peaceful passing in the year 2000, he performed for audiences around the world, delighting them with music and laughter. In my youth, I was actually able to see him perform live before he passed away and it was such a wonderful show. He was easily one of the greatest comedic musicians (or musical comedians) of all time.

Please enjoy some of these classic bits and routines and pass on the delight that is Victor Borge to anyone you know who may be too young to know him.
