You guys realize this is a local news affiliate, and not the cable channel, right? All the Fox News hate in here for this story is kind of amusing, but misguided.
Every local news I've ever seen, coast to coast, is about this level of dreck.
    Fixed that for you.

The problem with local news isn't when they report what's going on, it's when they try to go out and find stories. They obviously didn't understand exactly who or what they were dealing with, and they sure as hell weren't prepared for the backlash that would ensue. I work in the same building as News 12 CT, and they're professionals who take pride in their jobs, but they're hardly infallible or have more in-sight because they're journalists.

What backlash? A few nerds on their forums spamming it up? Or has there been any "terrrust threats" in?

Later in the segment a woman says she bought a dog because she was worried that "Anonymous" was going to attack her emo son.

Yeah, but I mean, seriously, hacking people's MySpace pages?

Yeah, but I mean, seriously, hacking people's MySpace pages?

Oh, Jesus, it's the end of the fucking world, there. It's not like they were stealing credit card numbers or something.

It's identity theft. Stealing credit card numbers is another form of identity theft so, to me, it's exactly "like they were stealing credit card numbers," and maybe even worse because there is no benefit to the perpetrator except a malicious/vindictive pleasure with the whole MySpace-page-trashing thing. At least with credit card fraud you can write the motive off as greed.

While I understand the "MySpace? LOL" attitude some people might have, I rather think it's arguably worse for someone to masquerade as someone else for the sole purpose of trying to ruin that individual's private relationships than it is for someone to try to financially defraud the person. I mean, both are wrong, I just don't see one being significantly "less worse" than the other.

Ask yourself: Would you be more angry if someone called your friend pretending to be you or if some random dude somehow stole your CC number and rang up purchases on it? Both would anger me, but I think I'd be exceptionally more angry by the former than the latter. The latter I could at least deal with, with the bank and CC company. The former? I'd punish that person if I ever found them.

edit: I guess I should point out that both have heppened to me - not on MySpace but through other means - and while I hate the individual that tried to run up a massive bill for me, the person that tried to fuck with my personal relationships deserves a warm seat in Hell.

Er.. very much the first one. I'm a little surprised someone would think otherwise, actually.

Also, how unstable would your relationships with your friends have to be for them to not realize that someone is impersonating you? It's not like these Myspace hackers are going to log on, learn about the subtle workings of your life and then slowly corrupt it from the inside. They're just going to get on and spam other people with stupid shit about "desu" and whatnot

It's not about actually ruining them, it's about trying to ruin them. I find that morally disgusting. I find trying to steal ALSO morally disgusting, but maybe in my cynicism I expect a certain percentage of the human population to be apathetically greedy but still expect that most people aren't apathetically malicious.

*shrug* This is why places like SomethingAwful and /B/ should be raided on a daily basis. You know the malicious pricks in high school who would destroy your shit just because they could? Yeah, that's /b/ and SA. That's the entire point of the websites.

The only real difference is that the slightly geeker kids amongst us and the people that require some level of anonymity to be cocks are accepted there.

Seriously. They're not funny, they're not interesting, and given their very nature, they're not exactly places you want to hang out to meet and talk with people. /b/ and their constant dumbfuckery, and SomethingAwful with their "LOL, we can be dicks, LOL!!!" crap drives me up the goddamned wall.

    BULL SHIT!

    Awful Link of the Day.

"HAY GUYS, I KNOW WE NEVER EVER RAID, WINK WINK, BUT HERE'S THIS WEBSITE OF SHIT WE DON'T LIKE. OH, AND HERE'S THEIR EMAIL ADDY. OH, AND LOOK, A FORUM. IT WOULD BE SO TOTALLY AWFUL IF YOU GUYS SHOWED UP AND TREATED THEM LIKE CRAP. HA. HA. HA."

I've SEEN these fucking SA goon raids first hand. They're fucking horrible, thousands of dumbfucks marching lockstep, with stupid fucking memes that they think are the most hilarious thing ever, but to the rest of us just sound like the repetitive jokes of a 4 year old.

"Ha ha, I called you cocoa. Ha ha, cocoa. Hehehe, Cocoa. Hi Cocoa. I called you cocoa."
(Interesting Trivia: That was my roommates' daughter in law, and I'm pretty sure Cocoa is the sekrit word her fine, upstanding uber-christian guardians (my roommate's parents in law) use in lieu of "African American".)

No forum officially does, as far as I know, and yet the evidence of SA raids is readily available. On their own site, even. Don't they host the screenshots from their raid of that online dating quiz game, for example?

Well for one, asking them to raid a girl and rape her was totally wrong. Seondly it was obvious that the hacker and mom were himself and his mom.

Frankly the Shota in his folder which his mom showed and the appearent raids he was planning make him out to be worse than the raiders of 4 chan and SA.

There is nothing good to be gained from navigating 4chan. But I also have no sympathy from people who aren't going to take basic precautions with their passwords, because I guarantee 99% of the vandalism is simply enabled from "dude here's a list of accounts and p/w's, knock yourselves out".

Oh, no, not all of it. But you should go through the front page archives from Katrina, detailing how much money they raised. They raised so much, so fast, PayPal shut them down because they thought it was part of a scam.
