    Honestly, I agree with Jake's reasons for why the soldiers classes are random--if you can build the perfect squad, then that's all you'll ever use. And XCOM is all about adaptation.

    Ugh. Haven't been paying too much attention to this and it sounds awesome. Probably going to have to wait until Windows 8 comes out though - don't see the point in upgrading to 7 when it's so close.

    So this game is kinda hard.

    Also, I dislike how your soldier gets a random specialty, instead of letting you select one. I don't need 3 goddamn snipers.

    EDIT: And yeah, playing with a gamepad. There's no reason not to.

    You will need 3 goddamn snipers. It's just a matter of time.

    Man, reading this thread has completely changed my X-COM plan. My first game will now be Classic Ironman with PA names, because watching my name come up in other peoples rosters is insanely awesome, and I want others to feel awesome by showing up in my roster as I get them killed. :D

    So just got the chance to start. Playing Classic Wussman. First impressions.
    Iolo is a much better assistant than this Bradford guy.
    Woodroez is one of my new recruits for the second mission. He damn well better rank up to sniper.

    @Woodroez was a support in my game, but a damn aggressive one. He had 8 kills through 2 missions, but bit the bullet running to cover on a bridge where two sectoids were entrenched in high cover and elevation. Your sacrifice enabled me to finish the mission, Wood, but you will be missed!

    Uh.. so about that if/when... Goddamn elevation crap, I put you behind a log on a ridge, but for some reason you jumped down into the middle of 3 mutons and 2 thinmen. But at least you got a screenshot before the mission, right?

    My targeting cursor will be at the top of the cliff, then randomly jump to the bottom, then up and down. I'd wait for it to stop and settle, click the top, they'd still run down the cliff. Its infuriating, and I just lost 3 of my best guys on an ironman run. Iolo, Lanrutcon, and now ShadowThomas is bleeding out from a flank when I tried to get them to a safe position. :/

    What is reaction fire and supression? I'm assuming reaction fire is when they shoot in overwatch. Is supression an ability?

    Reaction fire is both Overwatch and Suppression fire. Suppression is an ability that Heavy's, Supports, and a lot of aliens get.

    How does that work? I just tried suppressing a thin man and he just sat behind his little rock, nothing else. If he had moved would that have triggered my heavy to open fire on him which would have counted as reaction fire then?

    Operation Patient Calm had a bumpy start as Cpl. "Lights Out" Dirtmuncher and Cpl. "Combo" Tef took early hits from a Sectoid and a Thin Man (respectively). But that got ironed out right quick - rockets will do that - and escorting the VIP out to the Skyranger was by the numbers.

    Cpl. "Lights Out" Dirtmuncher, 9/3. Promoted to Sergeant. Wounded (4 days).
    Sq. TheKoolEagle, 3/3. Promoted to Corporal.

    Heh.

    I thought my first terror mission was gonna be a nightmare. I'd had a fairly good run up to this point, but I'd just completed a horribly botched operation that lost my all of my best men at that point; my only sniper, my most veteran soldier, and my senior support specialist (my remaining man fled to the skyranger and came home defeated and broken).

    So when the aliens decided they wanted to whack Miami, I was understandably concerned. They even had new aliens with which to slaughter my men! These tough little bastards could withstand several shots from my (relatively) primitive ballistic weapons. And they looked pretty vicious...

    Buuuuuut they weren't enough to hold back the unbeatable, homicidal machine that is the human spirit.

    Here are my top PA alien murderizers after 3 hours. All of the nicknames and hairstyles came from the RNG, I just changed the armor colors and one hair color.

    @Gandalf_The_Crazed - "Hardcore"
    He started with the hair and naturally became and assault guy. Nickname seems like a good fit :^:

    @Yermum - "Witchy"
    She gets the job done. Probably missed less than 10% of her shots. It looks like she's probably a hardass in the barracks ;-)

    They speed up the process of research/manufacturing, and you also must have a minimum number of them to manufacture/research certain topics. They can be hard to come by and are pretty vital when it comes to actually winning the game.

    edit- Oh also, can anyone give me tips on how to effectively use Snipers. Currently I hate them.

    I really dislike snipers too, mostly because they can't see shit at all. More than half the time I'm running around with a goddamn pistol because these alien fucks aren't going to expose themselves for even a lame body shot.

    When they're low level give them a scout and high ground (assault with run and gun up a ladder, for example). Upgrade them with squad sight when possible (this way they can actually, you know, snipe things from far away). Get them a laser pistol, plasma pistol or the pistol damage upgrade ability so you can start getting them more kills on the move.

    Otherwise the alternative to squad sight lets you move and shoot the sniper rifle (with reduced accuracy) in one turn, which may also work.

    I feel like their aim is still crap either way, but hopefully when I finally build a laser sniper rifle or get to Major the sniper ability will give me more than 65% chance of sniping things.

    Still, my sniper nicknamed 'Longbow' has 14 kills over 8 missions...Including staring down a chrysalid and 5 zombies before she could back up, 'Nuke' got back in the building and utterly destroyed everyone with a rocket (or at least took them down to 4 health so my random assault could whip out a grenade. And then everyone picked off the remaining zombies in the next turn.

    If you capture them you get to take their weapons whole and undamaged, which is kinda keen. I haven't researched a plasma rifle yet to see if I can then use it, though. I should check.

On approach the UFO, we flushes out a group of Floaters. vegeta_666, eager to get back at the alien bastards after a week in the hospital, charged right up to one and shotgunned it in the face. It didn't die. Luckily, Squaddie vegeta was able to shrug off the return fire and kill it at the next opportunity.
