Internet WAR.

Two web properties I don't really like that much are about to get into a sissy slap fight with enough firepower to make you roll your eyes in embarrassment.
This all stems from a sub reddit of creeps who take creepy photos of women and post them online (without their consent). This quite rightly alarmed some people and pissed other people off.
So a tumblr user started a tumblog called Predditors, which searched out the identities of the dudes posting creepy photos, and posted those details online.
Shortly thereafter the Predditors blog was taken down by Tumblr, then put back up, then taken down again but then put back up with password protection. Tumblr is predictably going crazy.
Gawker has since made moves to publish personal information on Reddit admins, which has caused Reddit to auto-ban links to Gawker Media sites.
The doomsday clock ticks closer to armageddon.
So anyway let's have a long and drama filled discussion about internet privacy and online social vigilante justice.
CONTEXT: What you have just read is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying that i'm a complete dumbass.
Not necessarily internet vigilante justice, but a good example of stupid as fuck social justice on tumblr would have to be people calling Neil Gaiman transphobic and racist.
Seriously Neil Gaiman. I nearly got a fucking migraine from the whole incident jesus christ.

shitredditsays got control of his account in a hilariously ironic turn of events
I still read reddit on occasion, and the amount of people jumping in to defend this shitbag is simultaneously hilarious and incredibly depressing, especially all the complaints about violating his privacy when the entire incident was due to a subreddit dedicated to violating people's privacy.
The creeper subreddit reminds me of the dude that made a thread here bragging about how he always had his camera with him so he could take photos of people (mainly women of course) who were foolish enough to change clothes in their cars. He sure had a hard time understanding why we didn't all appreciate the selfless service he was providing society.

i know that in certain parts of canada they have signs saying that you are going to be monitored on surveillance when you enter certain areas (gov't buildings, malls etc) and that by entering you are giving tacit consent

Yeah, that's mainly for security footage - same law that allows that also gives the creepyshots people some protection.

My wife and I will be starting a family soon and this kind of thing just... man I don't even know how to parse the information. Like I want to simultaneously give up and also punch a LOT of people.

so sad
I can honestly not imagine being a teenager today with facebook and shit
This is honestly one of the few things I worry about with my daughter. In ten to fifteen years, where will social media be, and how do I give her practical safeguards.
I know a couple of people at work have solved that problem with "no Facebook account for you!" but when you have relatives in another country, that my not be a practical solution.

on the other hand, i don't like gawker's company-wide site redesign
i guess it's kind of a wash really
while simultaneously defending their right to take anonymous photos of women and post them on the internet

juuuuuust missed that curve. i mean i had facebook in high school but it was not nearly the social juggernaut it is for people now.
Yeah, it was still enough of a fringe element for me that I didn't have to think too carefully about what got out there.
I don't think people have really thought about the consequences of having tools like this available during a child's formative years.
then we'll get raneados back
STEAM!
Ahh fuck.
