Does Chex Quest belong here? Because it totally friggin' does. Indisputably the best cereal premium ever yo.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSpGQ5AVJpI

A few years back, a couple of the original developers finished the third episode of this thing and packaged it with the original two along with a ZDoom executable for those not fortunate to have experienced its magic back in the day, digging out that CD from a pile of rock-hard wheat Chex. It's absurd, blatantly commercialistic, and, in the end, a pretty darned good way to kill an afternoon with a fun Doom TC.

It disappointing that the Doom 1 port still isn't on XBLA.

Do any of the source ports have decent support for the Xbox controller? Or even better support for split screen and multiple Xbox controllers?

Not sure about the latter, but zDoom works fine with a 360 pad. Or maybe it's Skulltag. One of those. Possibly both.

The only reason I even got the Doom port is because Amazon had it and Pac-Man:CE for $2.50 each one day (bought both). I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. I wonder why Doom hasn't been put back on XBLA. I know it was taken down because of licensing. I'm assuming the license wasn't reupped?

I haven't heard good things about Aeons of Death, so I've avoided it up until now. I've actually been playing a lot of No Rest for the Living, which is only on XBLA, unfortunately.

How come no one in the game industry has tried to make Doom again? Maybe nostalgia is addling my brain, but the gameplay is still fresh and viable to me after all these years.

I played through some of DWiD today and now I'm wondering the same thing. I would love to see a new franchise built on modern tech with those classic design philosophies, especially with regards to level design. Classic Doom 3 proves that the old ways can still be tons of fun on new tech.

Games like Painkiller and Serious Sam certainly have the Doom 2-style combat part going for them, but I still don't find them as exciting as Doom, for whatever reason. I honestly think it has to do with the lack of keycard hunting and backtracking. Exploring just isn't as fun without it.

Okay, after much consideration I've decided to update this thread as a Public Service Announcement for anybody planning to get the Doom 3 BFG Edition who doesn't have The Ultimate Doom or Doom II. It turns out that the IWADs for both games on all platforms are in fact the XBox Live Arcade versions, which are serviceable but rather barebones ports rather than the original PC versions; this includes the fact that the two Wolfenstein 3D secret levels in Doom II are censored to hell, replacing all the SS soldiers with regular Zombiemen, removing the Nazi imagery from the stage and even changing the map names to "IDKFA" and "Keen" respectively. The upside of it, though, is that PC players finally have an official version of the 10-map "No Rest for the Living" mini-episode of Doom II exclusive to the XBLA version (it's in the files as "Nerve.WAD"). Apparently you can use these in a source port, but it'll apparently require some patching, as this very helpful Doomworld forumer explains. There are apparently some other issues which you should probably read up on.

Anyway, it's been a while since this was last updated, and a lot has happened in the wonderful world of the Doom community since then, so for anybody interested, here are some more recommendations and releases!

    - The next version of Brutal Doom (v. 0.17) is coming on Halloween for your rippin' and tearin' needs. This mod just keeps getting more added to it, including buttons dedicated to vocal taunts and one-liners from Doomguy (many of which are from the infamous comic) and general polish.

    - Samsara is a mostly multiplayer-focused mod that works perfectly well in single-player as well. It features the ability to play as a whole host of characters, mostly from id/Doom engine related games, with their respective arsenals and playstyles. Of course Doomguy's still there playing as usual, but it also includes Heretic's Corvus with his item-carrying capabilities, the Chex Warrior from Chex Quest, BJ Blazkowicz in all his retro glory, Duke Nukem representing the Build Engine (complete with loads of quips), and, as of the latest version, the Security Officer from Bungie's Marathon Trilogy! Works with all WADs and levels that can be run on source ports like ZDoom!

    - WildWeasel Presents: Terrorists! is a total conversion mod which switches the classic Doom gameplay and style for a more Hollywood action-movie motif and arsenal, complete with human enemies (and some machines here and there). The best part of this mod is the surprisingly robust choice of weapons, complete with an upgrade system inspired from Medal of Honor: Airborne with which scoring kills with a weapon contributes towards "leveling" it up with improved attributes or visible attachments. The only problem is finding levels to use it with that keep with the theme.

    - Community Chest 4 is the latest crazy collaboration megawad from some of the Doom community's best and brightest mappers. I haven't tried it out yet, but considering the past iterations have all feature very solid and enjoyable maps I'd say this is a safe bet for anybody looking for a good time.

    - Coffee Break is a great short set (11 maps) of fast-paced levels with some surprisingly challenging setups and gameplay. Perfect for short bursts, as its name implies.

    New Brutal Doom on Halloween?

    How delicious.

  • TeeManTeeMan BrainSpoon Registered User regular
Anyone who hasn't played the Brutal Doom mod really owes it to themselves to give it a go. It's so entertaining and flat-out brutal that I finished to the end of Inferno in a single sitting, even though I've been playing those same maps a dozen times over since the mid 90's. Even if you take a pass on the extra stuff like taunts and fatality-style executions, the changes to weapon balance and monster behaviour completely revamp the game.

Weapons are no longer straight-up upgrades. The rifle (which replaces the pistol, but there's a mod to put the pistol back in if you're nostalgically inclined) is still good for long range fire after you've picked up the chain gun (which is basically a mid-range chainsaw; really tears things to shreds!). You've got to deal with reload mechanics on nearly all your weapons instead of just the double-barrel shotgun, so while the trusty pump-action shotgun is still the staple weapon, it's going to get you into trouble during prolonged engagements with an 8-shell max loading.

Pink demons are way faster and zig-zag towards you, Imps are a lot faster and jump at you, zombie soldiers scream and flail in agony when you blow off their arms... Just heaps of awesome shit, definitely give it a go!

Yes, Brutal Doom is still terrific fun.

Seriously though, you should check out Samsara some time, especially if you have games like Heretic, Hexen, or heck - even Chex Quest! Trust me, playing Chex Quest 3 with Duke Nukem is far more fun and hilarious than it has any right to be.

Batman Doom is an oldie but probably the best mod I've ever played. I have no idea how they managed to make Batman work as an FPS, but they've done it.

Most of the megawads I'm not a fan of - there's just too much filler sandwiched next to the showcase levels. But Batman Doom consistently mixes it up - there's an awesome level with a romp through a poison gas-filled Hospital with killer penguin robots. Then you're battling Scarecrow in a corn field, hopping across rooftops to chase down Two Face.... the whole thing is just immaculate.

Hm. That's kinda disappointing, but not really a dealbreaker since I already have the WADs from the original floppies and have never played Doom 3 (the original D3 demo wouldn't run on this PC and I didn't want to risk wasting money on an incompatible game). A PC version of No Rest for the Living is pretty exciting, though! I wasn't expecting that at all.

Probably because of the id/ZeniMax deal that took place shortly after Wolfenstein was released; up until that point id games and IPs were published by Activision - that's why Ultimate Doom on XBLA disappeared for a while before showing up again as a Bethesda-published title not too long ago.

It should also be noted that any current mods for the original Doom 3 won't work with the BFG Edition version, so until people start cracking on that what you see is what you'll be getting for a while. There are all sorts of discussion threads in forums comparing the modded OG D3 with the BFG version and saying the modded original is still way better-looking in many ways. Still, the BFG Ed. wins in terms of sheer content for price ratio.

EDIT: I should probably mention that Skulltag has been rendered obsolete as much of the team behind it has disbanded, but a few members have taken the base engine and remade it as Zandronum. Anything Skulltag related should still work on it, but as a whole the port seems to have been radically transformed and streamlined.

There's something still very beautiful about Doom's aesthetic. I just hope it's not deep seeded nostalgia.

Well, Zenimax already made the decision for people who don't own Doom 3 yet on Steam. The original version and its expansion has been locked away in the $100 id pack and the previous Doom bundles have been disbanded.

Well, doing some research I found that this isn't so much a mod issue as it is tweaking various config parameters. This seems to cover the FOV issue, while widescreen support is covered here (or here if that link doesn't work).

    Ah, megawads.

Once upon a time I worked on a megawad with my better half, though we only ended up finishing 12 levels out of 32. T'was entitled 'Underworld' and its levels followed a Greek mythological theme (ie maps sculpted around and named after the Underworld rivers and such).

We ended up burning out on it, though I put a bit of JDoom programming scripting into the effort.

If you still have it lying around, why not give the Doomworld community a crack at continuing or collaborating with what you already have? I'm interested in seeing what it looks like; not many people design levels with that kind of motif or theme in mind. Other than Epic 2 (Egyptian themed), and the Lizardmen WADs (more Amazonian/South American) I can't think of any WADs right now that don't use the stock techbase/Hell-themed/Gothic style predominantly.

BFG only has 600 points associated with it. Doom 1 and 2 are treated as the XBLA editions each carrying 200 points each to cover up the difference.

I was going through a stack of old software and came across this:

    IJGea.jpg
    iaGqS.jpg

I think my dad bought it for the map editor, but we never messed around with it long enough to figure out how to make anything.

The rest of the compilation appears to be Softkey doing their shovelware thing. Downloading as many .WADs as they could find online and slapping them on a CD with an incredibly misleading name. Still, it's a mildly interesting relic from the days before the internet was commonplace in North American homes. I wonder if there's anything good on it.

I would pick this up if you could turn doom 3 'classic mode' on, as in the original version.

But I understand you can't, for some retarded reason. So oh well.

  • GrimthwackerGrimthwacker Registered User regular
Well, some good news coming out of the BFG Edition tomfoolery - John Carmack has already been given the okay to release as much of the BFG version of Doom 3's code as possible, so people should soon be able to do whatever they want with it. It's not surprising considering that idTech 4 was made public a while ago, and this is just the same engine with some modifications.

I guess this is as good as place as any to mention some of the nice things stashed away in the old Doom Depot site - that's where you can get ahold of the "Doom 64: Absolution" total conversion WAD that's a standalone executable recreating Doom 64 with the old Doomsday source port. There's also a couple of nice WAD choices in the "Doom Diversity" section including "Console Doom", a megawad made by Kaiser (the guy who made the TC and its follow-up version, Doom 64 EX, which actually requires use of the game's ROM to use) that compiles maps from various console releases like D64 and the PSX version of Doom. It's interesting to see just how different some of the more familiar maps from the old games are when remade due to various technical limitations; I almost didn't recognize some of them.

Oh, and for anybody looking for Chex Quest 3: here it is.

What's even the benefit of the Doom 3: BFG edition? What's the bullet point that makes people want to buy it? So far I've seen:
    - Incompatibility with D3 mods
    - D1 and D2 versions from XBLA and incompatible with WADs
    - Resolution oddities with D3

Any one of them is reason enough for me not to get this package.

Yes if you already own it on PC its obviously a waste of money, but I'd say the crux of the sale is for console players who want it in their collection (for various reasons), and PC players who've never played it before and feel like trying it out.

Problem is they went and did....'things' to the old digital versions of doom 3 (ways to buy it I mean). Like, as how someone pointed out, you can now only get the original version of doom 3 on steam by buying one of their bundle deals. And likely only then because they didn't notice it was part of that when they had them take down the single purchase version.

Which pisses me off because after I decided I didn't like the changes they made in the bfg version, first thing I did was go to steam and try to get the original version; only to find it's effectively been pulled (I'm not buying a 99$ game bundle for a single game, obviously).

Of course you can no longer get Wolfenstein now either (the newest one) for completely different but equally retarded reasons. (can you get it anywhere actually? rumor is they don't even have an authentification server working for it, nor a patch to remove the requirement, so the only versions that even work are maybe the console ones; that's insane considering it was a AAA game that's not even, what, three years old? shows you what legalise and company bickering can do I guess)

Well, the main draw of the package, other than the convenience of having three games in one pack, is the tweaked engine that runs at 60 FPS with better quality textures and lighting that doesn't require almost constant use of the flashlight (as well as the shoulder-mounted light you can use independently from your weapons). Yeah, it's incompatible with current mods, but again, id's going to be releasing the altered code for the BFG version soon, so people will be able to go nuts with whatever they can think of. The versions of Doom/DII are the XBLA versions, but as I said in an earlier post they can be run with source ports and modded, plus there's the "No Rest For the Living" mini-episode for Doom II.

As for the fact that the vanilla versions are being squirreled away in the id Complete Pack, sadly that's Bethesda being Bethesda.
