This movie is amazing. Just came out today and I loved it.
It has a lot of big name actors/actresses in it...
Tom Hanks
Halle Berry
Hugo Weaving
Jim Sturgess
Doona Bae
Susan Sarandon
James D'arcy
Hugh Grant

, but that isn't super important.

Let us discuss this movie and how it is awesome.

Should I read the book first?

    Probably up to you?
    I didn't and loved it.

I went with someone who has seen it twice (saw a sneak preview) and plans to see it again tomorrow.
So I'd say it is enjoyable either way.

This movie is divisive as hell, so I am definitely seeing it this weekend

At the very least it looks super ambitious and very pretty

Most people who were outraged went "Oh. Yeah. Actually it makes total sense" after seeing it.
But don't look for why, just see it first and you'll get it.

    Outrage? Wha?

I'm just referring to the fact that it's got a 61% (barely fresh) on Rotten Tomatoes, 40% from top critics

Also, Ebert gave it four stars, and while I don't always agree with him, his perspective is always a nice one to read about and he sounds really into this movie

I loved Speed Racer and Run Lola Run so the directors all have good credit in my book

*I* liked it. What more reason could you want?

Reason for outrage (I wouldn't click unless you really don't care about spoilers):
Is that Jim Sturgess wears makeup / prosthetics to look asian during some scenes.

    Oh

Well I assumed most of the people in this were playing characters of different races. Maybe even genders?

I've prepared my mind for extravagance

Also a number of complaints have to do with it being "too complicated" or "Not enough like the book"

Went and saw it earlier today.
Overall, I feel vaguely disappointed. The movements of the overall story were vast and slow, like an orchestra that forgot its crescendo. Saw some great performances from the actors, no doubt, but the make up was horrendous. I wanted sexy "Mr Anderson" Weavings, not falsetto broomhandle nurse Weavings. I was hoping for a cross-generational fight against oppression and ignorance, but the action only ever seemed to materialize in shots already exploited by the trailer.

I feel like this movie was crippled by its trailer. All of the important plot points were completely transparent if you had seen the trailer more than once. The repetition of the fabricant's mantra lost its staying power by the third or fourth time it snuck into a scene.

I give props for being willing to murder characters across the narrative and intermingle between genres and times. The parts without mangled ethnic make up were pretty. Cute to see the same character shift from useless extra to villain to hero over time. Overall, just kind of okay.

I was really interested when I saw the trailer before Dredd. I'll definitely be seeing this.

Based on the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems like everyone either loves it or thinks it's an overambitious failure. This is actually more intriguing to me than if it was just positive reviews across the board. I've been meaning to read the book for ages, so I was thinking I might hold off on seeing the movie until I read it, but now I don't want to wait.

Considering how good it is will vary depending on the individual in question, this seems a pretty arbitrary and meaningless ratio.

I can see the logic behind this, but Speed Racer is a really odd movie where it was critically loathed and yet the fanbase for it seems disproportionately high

    (Because it is great)

Belief, like fear or love, is a force to be understood as we understand the theory of relativity and principles of uncertainty, phenomena that determine the course of our lives. Yesterday, my life was headed in one direction. Today, it is headed in another. Yesterday I believed I would never have done what I did today. These forces that often remake time and space, that can shape and alter who we imagine ourself to be, begin long before we are born and continue after we perish.

It's not really juvenile to point out that the way this thread's title is constructed could be read as kind of goosey
