Moving pictures with sound is the most mainstream-accessible form of media (and hence most profitable), so it's pretty normal to want to get to that status! This of course includes film, of which Scott Pilgrim is a prime example of ascension.
Oh, yeah, I get the material rewards side of it, but you can find that same level of exposure and personal profit in webcomics, without having to sell off your own work to a third party.
Though I'm thinking mostly of stuff like Penny Arcade and MSPA, which might be bad examples.

Story
Many years ago, near the end of the 2002/2003 school year, I was in the minority engineering program lab. The free printer and communal nature of the program meant a lot of familiar faces. Everyone was working on their stuff and a few teams were working on their projects. Suddenly everyone was shaken out of their work buzz (I may have been gaming) by a woman running out of the lab and into the hallway and talking loudly on her phone.
She was hispanic and while I never knew her personally, I knew enough people that knew her and her sister at the school to know she was good peoples. I knew that she was a blessing to those around her and that I should be sad we weren't friends.
This woman spoke on the phone to family back home. Her sister was close at hand as she switched from Spanish to English asked why their grandmother was crying.
I can only imagine how hard it is to lose a brother, much harder when its so close to her college graduation.
Everyone silently sat in the lab digesting the private moment we had been privy to.
Then gay X speaks up, "Well that was weird."
Now, to explain why I was compelled to beat this man soundly, you need two facts. The first fact is that he inquired into the sex life of my girlfriend and I had when he tutored with her at a local high school. The second fact is that whenever there was a forum on gay issue, gay X took over the entire session and would invariably dominate the topic on how his family disowned. A tragic story, but an annoying one once you take over a number of forums every FUCKING time you attend.
I glared at the prick, walked away, and hugged my baby extra tight.
Oh, and we called gay X gay X because there was another guy named X who was from the same country as X and we called him short X. He's a much nicer guy, he's an author now so that's why I'm leaving this shit anonymous.
