Secret Sandman 2012 - Make others' dreams come true - Send the gifts by Dec 31st!

Secret SandmanSecret Sandman Registered User regular
edited November 2012 in Graphic Violence
You find yourself in a grand feasting hall. The table under your palms stretches seemingly into infinity, and you see several more like it around the room. Seated at these tables alongside you are people of every shape, color, and dress. Tiny monster scurry between the tables, carrying bottles, clean and dirty plates, and trays loaded with food. Your gaze is drawn to an elevated, ornate chair, nearly a throne. Seated upon it is a pale figure dressed in black. His hair is raven, and pinpoints of light shine from his sockets, stars in the night. He rises and speaks.

images.gif

"Once a year, in wintertime, it falls upon mortals to make the dreams of others come true. You who are invited here tonight will be given the chance to do this for your fellow Graphic Violence posters. Lucien."

A thin, bookish man with a shock of hair sticking up from his head steps to the front of the room. He reads from a book that he holds in front of him.

"Let those who are interested and willing to participate in the gift exchange announce themselves in this thread before November 17th, and send a new forum message directly to my lord Secret Sandman with your name and address. Soon after that deadline, every participant will receive a message with another participant's name and address; it will be your task to select a present for that person, and to send it to them by December 31st.

"The traditional guideline for presents is this: a trade paperback, or something of equivalent value. If you wish to give more, you are more than welcome to do so. Some people may prefer gifts in other forms: digital comics, action-figures, or perhaps comic-themed clothing. If this is true for you, please let it be known. It is also advised that you post a list of what comics you already have, that your gift-giver doesn't accidentally send you a duplicate.

"This post will be updated with the latest information. Refer to it if you have any questions."

The thin man closes his books and steps back. The dark man on the throne looks off to the side and waves his hand. You open your eyes and find yourself at home, in bed, the thin man's words still in your ears.

Thank you for signing up!

All participant names have been assigned and sent out! Please let me know if you haven't received one!

Gifts should be sent by December 31st!

That really sucks, Anti (especially since I, for one, would like to read a good TF comic; I keep meaning to buy some of the ones you've recommended, but keep not getting around to it). The only thing that I can say is that you will mostly likely be compensated for whatever gift you send by the gift that you get in return, but of course that's irrelevant if you can't afford to buy a gift in the first place.

You blink, and realize that you are back in the grand feast hall. It's much smaller this time, and there's only one table. Seated around it are just a handful of people. The pale man is not here, nor is the thin man in glasses. As you gaze around, you notice two short nightmares marching importantly to the front of the hall. One of them sets down a small step ladder and snaps to attention next to it. The other climbs the handful of steps to the top and begins to speak.

"The volunteers have stepped forth and been counted! Thank you for your generosity! Within the week, you will receive the secret names of the people you are to send a gift to. For now, please try to get together a list of comics that you own, so that your Secret Sandman doesn't accidentally send you what you already have."

The short nightmare climbs down the step ladder, and the other one collects it. They both march out of the hall; as soon as they leave, darkness overtakes you. You come to in your bed, at home, a slight headache buzzing between your ears.

    Stuff I am interested in:
Due to work and finances sucking for the first half of the year, I haven't really purchased anything in the last year or so.
Last stuff I read for DC was Blackest Night and I haven't read anything Marvel 616 really since right before Hope/Cable came back to the current time line. And since Miles took over in USM. Although I have been keeping up with the cliff notes, I want to snag the AvX trade eventually and kick back up there. Has there been anything that hasn't really sucked since One More Day?

I also hear the more recent transformers stuff (2011+) is really top notch.

Here is my Amazon wish list for friends and family to give you some kind of idea what I am interested in

You've been sitting in the grand feast hall for a long time. Other than you and your table-mates, there's no one around. Finally, fed up with the long, uneventful wait, you get up as a group and make for the exit. When you are mere feet from the door, a tall, thin figure appears between you and the exit. It's dressed in black, and on its head is a curious helm that resembles a mix between an alien skull and a gas mask. Around the figure's neck glitters a large ruby. The figure speaks.

    "Patience."

The figure spreads his arms wide, and glittering dust - sand? - floats through the air and settles on your skin. Burned suddenly into your mind is a name, a secret name. You know who that person is: the one you are to deliver a gift unto.

    The thin figure steps aside.

"You have your names. Make those people happy."
Everyone should have received the name of another person who signed up for the Secret Sandman. If you didn't, please let me know! Please try to send them their gifts before December 31st!

Here is my list of stuff and things I would be interested in:
I've got/read most of this stuff:
    - Pretty much most of DC from Crisis on Infinite Earths up to Flashpoint, with the exception of Wonder Woman books
    - most X-Men books like Uncanny, WatXM, UXF
    - Ultimate books up to the death of Peter Parker
    - Kurt Busiek's Avengers run (pretty much all of the Heroes Return books up to Diassembled)
    - Astro City
    - Fables/Jack of Fables/Fairest
    - Y the Last Man
    - Walking Dead
    - Ex Machina
    - Manhattan Projects
    - the new TMNT series
    - the two new Transformers series
    - Runaways
    - Chew
    - Saga
    - the new Valiant stuff like X-O Manowar, Bloodshot
    - Mini Marvels/G-Man
    - All the big Alan Moore books
    - Daytripper
    - The Other Side
    - Severed
    - A Tale of Sand
    - Grant Morrison's works
    - Roger Langridge's works (Thor TMA, Muppets, Popeye, Snarked)
    - Umbrella Academy
    - Atomic Robo
    - Locke & Key
    - Daredevil from Miller to the present Waid run
    - Spider-Man up to One More Day (no real desire to read anything after that)
    - Scarlet Spider
    - Remender's Venom run

Things I would be interested in:
    - post Flashpoint, no real interest in any of the books outside of Manapul's Flash
    - I've not read a lot of Cullen Bunn's work, but would be interested in that
    - Spaceman
    - Superior
    - Brubaker's criminal stuff for Marvel, the Incognito/Criminal stuff
    - X-Factor after renumbering back to #200
    - any of the 80's TMNT comics/stories, the old Eastman/Laird stuff
    - anything that is funny, doesn't matter if it's heroes or not, just funny stuff
    - Gillen's Journey Into Mystery
    - Hickman's Secret Warriors
    - any kind of Vertigo or Image or other independent book is cool with me, just nothing from Brian Wood

I'm also cool with anything being print or digital, no big preference there.
