Living in the far north is pretty rad. In the summer you get 24 hours of light, in the winter you get amazing Aurora Borealis.

Again: the entire book has words like that.

Let me hit you with one complete sentence from the book. From page 195:

"And in such essays as Reclus' 'Ouvrier, prends la machine!', with its loathing of artifice, suburbs and spiritual deracination, and medievalist longing, there was surely much for Morris to approve."

    Have fun.

At least not as bad as reading Joyce. But still, oof.

the northern lights are truly really fucking amazing.

apropos: it is annoying how like, every single video of them are time-lapse. Clouds seem to move and shift and flicker in time lapse too!

but the northern lights do that before your very eyes. It's a p big part of the magic.

the aurora I saw here a while back was different from the other times I've seen it. Fainter, since it's much farther south and well, in the middle of a city, but it was flitting across the sky with great speed. It was super cool.

when I saw that one, I spent 7 hours at night freezing my fucking ass off because I had locked myself out. The time before that was day 10 of an exercise and it was balls cold and I was so very, very, very sick of field rations and waking up in a slightly damp and cold sleeping bag every time.

totally worth it both times. If I had to tent outside for a month I would consider it time well spent if I got to see the northern lights like they were that time in the army.

reading bad machinery again from the start - after reading scary go round again from the start this weekend - is a good way to start the day.

Bad Machinery is getting a proper book release sometime soon from Oni press. I think he's revised some of the art and generally brushed things up.

For me BM is head and shoulders above SGR in terms of writing, art and general polish.

    oh, yeah.

    Still though, SGR is wonderful.

    Such a strangely melancholy end.

Melancholy which is mostly healed by reading on. Ryan and Amy are wonderful in BM. Also there's giant days! Which is no longer availible on-site.

I would consider buying his comic books. It would be the first of the sort in my collection.

Man Allison is just so good at characters.

    also:
Sarkozy: "Monsieur Lovelace, do you know why I married Carla Bruni?"
Lovelace: "Because she's physically flawless, wealthy and intellectual?"
Sarkozy: "Non, non, non. If you write ze 2nd "r" very small, she is "Carla Bunny".

I know, I know, it is like a dream."

or well the main characters and their families were changed somewhat from their appearances in SGR.

in BM I love them all. Although a bit of that... everyone are pretty lovable people thing was in there with shauna's bigger brother whose main skills was according to shauna, spitting and loitering but he was still charming.

also: currently investigating if this character is a returning character or non. Will report back.

    preliminary findings:
The typical train driver is a man called Mike, 41, who once bought a pirate dvd but threw it away on the way home from the pub.

The typical coach driver is Trevor, 41, who killed a party of Cub Scouts with a freight train in 1995 and doesn't care anymore.

The original ending of SGR was a lot more violent, but because of Jacko's spectacular death and subsequent unpleasantness regarding his probable crimes would have lent the story a somewhat sour note Allison changed things. Originally The Boy was going to be transformed into a terrible monster of some kind by Jacko (along with a couple of others, I think), then run amuck at the school disco, killing several. Eventually Esther reluctantly kills him. Everyone is sad. The end.

I kinda prefer the revised ending, to be honest.

Man, Bad Machinery is absurdly charming.

I need to actually read through it sometime; I usually get to just before something interesting starts to happen and then forget to keep reading.

I would also recommend reading a bit of SGR. Maybe from around... chapter 30?

Oh hey, I should do my annual re-read some time soon.

I hear he's working on a sequel. However that would work.

I'm really glad I didn't stop reading after the first chapter looked like fan fiction.

Actually just found this short story he did about a casino in the universe. http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2003/5/17/212828/593

Hey, if the USA rebuffs Puerto Rico's desires of Statehood, can Norn Iron join instead? You'll definitely get at least one Republican senator out of it.

Aside from the time I spent in my half-homeland of England, I've only ever been to Italy

This needs to be rectified before I am too old
