    Prague is also very nice, even if a bit tourist-y nowadays.

    Got a question for

    @Ronya
    @Mazzyx

    Apparently Chinese immigrants coming to the UK, and then burning their passports - because the Chinese government won't recognise them as their citizens unless forced to (like by having a passport issued by the Chinese government proving their nationality) and they can stay here because we can't deport them.

    This strikes me as a pretty odd dynamic, are there any articles you guys know of discussing this? I'd be interested to know more because I've never heard of anything similar.

    @Leitner

    sounds like a urban legend. Entering the UK would generate a paper trail already, and the UK border agency would use that to prove nationality to the PRC.

    it sounds plausibly like a distortion about a much more believable account that a dissident (separately) burned his passport as a political act and also claimed refugee status due to dissidence. The PRC, not liking dissidents very much, resists taking him back anyway - but that too is separate from the passport-burning.

    Wow. You go, Herman Wouk.

    I don't think I've ever read anything by him, though I'm aware of The Winds Of War and I think he wrote the original novel of The Caine Mutiny.

    I haven't read anything of his either, but I'm kind of curious about this one now.

    Ermergerd so there is the most adorable old (not a couple from their conversation but totes flirting) man and woman on my train. They have this strange vaguely british/american upper crust accent and they are sooo adorbs. On the platform waiting for the train, the guy was all "oh beg pardon!" And went back to discussing the exquisite traits of various greek islands with his sweet old posh companion. And the on the train when the ticket guy came around he was all "excuse me, but is this the right train that takes us to Pennsylvania Station?" Oh you cute old codger (as he referred to himself) no one calls it that anymore!
