At 0624 Zulu Time, the Lapland Computer successfully matched everyone up with an appropriate Santee! :)

Using the Dangerous Forbidden Art of "Mail Merge", I have constructed a brief message to everyone telling them who to project their classiness to. If you haven't got a message and think you should have, let me know.

    Happy Gifting!

Eeeee yay it's santa time! Santa I will post my desires sometime today. I will craft such an equivocating, vague, confusing, and downright unhelpful list that your frustration shall ring through time and space, and I shall feed on it on every year hence, for it shall be the gift that keeps on giving

oh so i made a mini gift like/dislike rubric in my original signup post but i would like to take this space to say that ultimately i feel like this process should also be about the santa having a moment of shopping satisfaction. if you are suddenly struck by 'oh man, that'd be an awesome gift', ignore any dislikes or annoyances i've listed anywhere on the forums!

i would prefer to get something that you are excited to give/would use yourself/or think is clever/or think is an original way to tap into who i am/that is local/any number of things... even if i wouldn't strictly 'want' the thing. have fun please!

So a list of what I'd like. Well you're shit out of luck. Doing those always gives me a splitting headache. Sorry. The upside is that I should be easy as hell to stalk.

    What not to get me:
NSFW items. Stuff is being shipped to my job. I won't be the first person to open the box.
No alcohol. I don't drink, and any booze I get will be regifted. Same with other mind altering substances.
Clothing is rather tough. Probably best to avoid.

I've been collecting odd or interesting T-shirts, I'm an XXXL.

Other clothes are probably not a good idea since I have a really weird fit. I've gone total e-reader with my iPad, so I'd rather not get any books, too.

Interesting or odd stuff I like. Especially if it's uniquely local!

So i realized that even though I am here all the freaking time, I am more of a lurker and post mostly in the sports threads. So my secret santa, I am pretty easy to shop for. I like odd stuff, booze and local stuff. I have a pretty warped sense of humor so unless you are shipping me the remains of a targeted race or religious people, I'll probably find the humor in it. NSFW is fine, I am sure I can find some sort of unintended use for it. My last santas sent me local beers which was awesome except now I have to travel back to Mississippi ever so often to just get more lazy Magnolia beer.

It occurs to me that I never provided any sort of wishlist. So...

    :^: :

Board/card Games - I used to play in a regular game night, but folks have moved away and they owned most of the games. 2 player would be nice so I have something my wife and I can play together. When in doubt, err towards the middle of the spectrum between party games and hardcore nerd games, but I'll play just about anything. If you have a game that you particularly love, so much the better!

Clothes - I typically fit either a L or an XL in t-shirts/hoodies and am always looking for something smart/funny/distinctively designed

Food/Booze - Got a favorite national/regional liquor? Yeah, I'll try some of that, so long as it isn't licorice/anise flavored. Ditto for foodstuffs. My wife and I are also amateur wine snobs, so that's always fun.

Graphic Novels: Always interested in finding a new series/writer to love. Some favorites from the past have been 100 bullets, Ex Machina, Transmetropolitan, Preacher.

    :...: :

Video Games - My steam profile is in my sig, but I've already got a huge backlog. I also own a PS3, but it rarely gets used as anything other than a Netflix device due to TV-sharing logistics.

Books - See above re: massive backlog. I love to read, though, so if you have something that you're just dying to share then by all means...

    Music - See also: Books

    :v: :

    NSFW stuff

Anime/Manga - I've tried. Really, I have. But it just isn't for me.

Hope that helps, but please, PLEASE feel free to experiment.

Ok, Santee. Your first thing is coming to you in the mail. It is a poster from a web comic you apparently really really really like. Not Penny Arcade. I couldn't include a note, so that's all the hint I can give you, just in case you go 'WTF, where did this come from?'.

Really random thoughts on a gift guide for me as I get ready to hit the hay:

I like sports a lot, especially basketball, and various sports paraphernalia (baseball-style hats especially). Mitchell and Ness is a favorite shopping spot of mine when they have sales, since I really dig throwback stuff and defunct teams, etc. Trying to fashion a nice actual clothes wardrobe too, though clothes are pretty tough to gift, I know. Shirts would probably run M and my hat size is 7 3/8

I play video games, though not as much as I used to (I have a 360, an N64 and a Wii which gets basically no use). I don't have any sort of e-reader so books are definitely welcome. Sports books like Breaks of the Game or the Book of Basketball (both of which I have) are great, but any topic would be awesome too

Some hobbies - playing guitar, playing poker, playing basketball, working out

I have no objections at all to getting DVDs or music but I have fairly large collections of both already which are hard to list so it might be tricky

I do have Celiac disease so it'd probably be more trouble than it's worth to try and find or make gluten-free food/alcohol, and most of it isn't so great anyway

Stuff to probably avoid this time: Anime/Manga; NSFW stuff; comics or stuff based on the comic universes; food or drink with delicious, delicious gluten

I really can never think of anything I specifically want as gifts, and I've just been spitballing random ideas, so go nuts! I'm gonna be happy with anything I get

Okay, I've received a couple of messages from Santas concerned that their Santee hasn't yet put up a wishlist or even a like/dislike list. Everyone to whom that applies: Please put up such a list ASAP.

Also, when you sent stuff, try to give me either an order number from the shop or site you ordered from or a tracking number from the delivery service you used, so I have something to pass along to the Santee in the event of something going wrong as proof of your classiness.

  • simonwolfsimonwolf i can feel a difference today, a differenceRegistered User regular
Alright, I made a promise to myself that I would post a likes and dislikes list just for you, my secretest of Santas. So here goes.

    What I Am Into:
Board/card games - Despite never having a chance to play them, I really do enjoy having them. A small number of required players is appreciated, since I don't really have a group going on here.

Food/booze - Who doesn't enjoy putting on those holiday kilos? Something different is always appreciated, so if you have a local speciality, send it my way.

History books - I like reading about history, especially the areas that aren't typically covered by anything but an incredibly specialised curriculum. Stuff set about the 1800s/early 1900s is always interesting, doesn't matter where in the world we're talking.

What I Would Open And Say "Oh, Thanks" But Secretly Be A Little Ambivalent About:
Video games - I don't have a gaming computer here in Japan, nor do I have my PS3. So it's a little difficult for me to do any gaming of the video variety. If you want to get me something as an investment for the future, go ahead, I guess!

Fiction books - I have a relatively large backlog of fiction to read, and my library is pretty comprehensive back home, so I dare say that you might end up duplicating something I already have if you go down this path.

    Music - See above!

What Would Probably End Up Getting A Receipt Request:
Anything that's an "objet" - I do not have much room in my apartment to display anything of the sort, and I honestly have a very hard to pin taste in these kinds of things.

But honestly, take this list as a guide, and not a strict set of rules and regulations of what will be tolerated. Anything you get will be interesting to me (for as long as my digital generation mind can pay attention to it), especially if it's something that isn't super common.

I love you, my Secretest Santa

    truly

    Please No.

    I don't want Video games
    I don't want music
    I don't want movies
    I don't want books
    I don't want candy
    I don't want Anime
    I don't want glassware

    Please Yes.

I do want decorations/nicknacks - specifically I am looking for something to put ontop of some shelves or on wall.
I do want something you made - especially if it falls in the above category of decorations/paintings/nicknacks.
I do want liquor/beer - mostly just liquor/beer that I might not have heard of and or ever seen.
I do want clothes - so long as its a long sleeve shirt or sweater. I wear a size large. No T-shirts please
I do want neat little tech gizmos gadgets and whatnots - I'm an engineer.
I do want Dishonored for PC - I decided to leave 1 videogame as a backup gift just incase the rest of the list sucked for you. My steam name is Dunadan019. no big deal if you skip it.

  • HakkekageHakkekage Space Whore Academy summa cum laudeRegistered User regular
So I have been agonizing somewhat over this since I have been so preoccupied with getting gifts for others that I did not even consider what I want! It turns out, not much.

    :D list

I like alcohol. Wines and liquors are excellent. Particularly if it is something I have not tried before (to give you an idea of how high class and far ranging my tastes have wandered, anything beyond sutter home and smirnoff is a good direction to head in). For red wines, I like pinot noir and shiraz; for whites, chardonnay; for liquors, anything but tequila, god damnit tequila.

I also like food. Any food. Non-food food. I'm a fat goat.

Experiences. I guess I am at the point where I am less enamored by *stuff*. Though please don't burst through my window dressed in a skimpy clown negligee leading your pet lemur on a leash promising to give me the night of my life. No good.

I like books and comics. Sandman is my very favorite of all time. Neil Gaiman is my spirit animal. I also like Good Omens and have been half heartedly trying to get into Discworld and Terry Prachett for years but never know where to start (already read Colour of Magic and its sequel. Where next??) I also like non fiction (bill bryson being the height of what I'm talking about), politics, and art history.

Speaking of I fucking love novelty museum gift shop type items with famous works of art on them. I have a beautiful umbrella with Starry Night and I adore it. Any european painting from giotto onwards (caravaggio, french impressionists, all the way up to klimt, escher, etc), 20th century american modern/postmodern (kara walker, rothko, calder...if you get me a calder mobile I shall die), japanese prints or screens (rinpo school represent), persian rug patterns/illuminated manuscript/calligraphy/shahnameh, etc.

Thinkgeek. I love dem. Unfortunately I simply do not need more *things* and urge caution while traversing the treacherous, siren-flushed waters of thinkgeek. Although I do like those firefly les hommes/les femmes art nouveau posters. And all the stuff in the home/office section. My nerd and media tastes are strong with these: game of thrones/asoiaf, firefly, portal, battlestar galactica, community, breaking bad, doctor who (!!!matt smiiith!!!), and whatever else I can't think of this fucking early in the AM.

I also love home made things. If you have a talent lay it on me. I will make an exception in the experiences rule if you would like to hold a boombox over your head and serenade me outside my window, although I can't guarantee you won't be arrested.

By the way, these are just suggestions, not desires. Things I am partial to but am easily going without (if I weren't I'd have gotten them for myself already!). If you want to surprise me please by all means do so!!

    :( list

Just...random, useless things. I have enough STUFF. If it's good for a chuckle but not much else pleeeaase do not spend your money.

I will also try to cobble together an amazon wishlist if you want things to be easier (I don't blame you, gift shopping is driving me nuts right now I totes understand)

Oh looks like santees have been assigned...guess I should maybe try and throw together some semblance of a wishlist! Somewhat edited from last year...here we go!

    The :D

    - Tabletop/board gaming stuff. I have quite a few pen and paper RPGs, but mostly core books for those systems (D&D, Pathfinder, GURPS, M&M, Savage Worlds, World of Darkness, Burning Wheel, etc.). Supplemental books for any of these systems would be cool, or even some indie RPG that you think deserves more attention! I also love board games, but only have a few (Catan, Chaos in the Old World + Rat expansion, Twilight Imperium). Expanding that collection is always awesome.

    - Beer/whiskey/coffee/regional food. Stuff local to your town/region or a personal favorite of yours would be cool. I like trying out new stuff, so something that I'm unlikely to stumble across or pick up at random at the local boozery or cafe could make for a nice and shareable gift.

    - Something you made. I don't care if it's knitted, sewn, carved, painted, or forged from cold iron, if you made it I'll probably like it!

    - Basically anything from ThinkGeek. I'll likely love all things related to Star Trek, Star Wars, LotR, Game of Thrones, video games, general "nerd culture" and such. Just not so much into nerdy shirts or clothing in general though.

    The :)

    - Video games. I love them, but like a lot of people I have a pretty decent backlog going.

    - Books. I love reading, but I've never put together an Amazon wishlist to handily link here or anything, and putting together any sort of comprehensive list of stuff I want to read would take a while. For fiction I like sci-fi/fantasy like any good nerd, and most non-fiction ends up being to my liking. Comics are also always welcome!

    The :?

    - Movies/music. I don't really buy music and movies in a physical format anymore, and like with books putting together a list of what I want to watch/listen to is daunting.

    - NSFW stuff, unless it's really really funny and/or clever.

Okay, I've received a couple of messages from Santas concerned that their Santee hasn't yet put up a wishlist or even a like/dislike list. Everyone to whom that applies: Please put up such a list ASAP.
Is that me? I bet it's me.
    Here we go.
    :)
-I'm pretty much a nerd who likes nerdy things.
-I love to read, especially Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I read a lot when I was a kid so if you know of any books that came out within the last couple years and weren't part of an older series, it's much more likely that I haven't read them than if you go with something more classic. Graphic novels are pretty cool, I only own a few nearly all of which were gifts from previous Santas. Also books that are funny, or about weird things.
-I love music, especially vocal or piano music. Classical, video game stuff, symphonic, Jazz, that kind of thing. I sing and play piano, though I don't currently have a piano. Do not get me a piano, I have nowhere to put it. Also shipping on that would be heinous.
-I love computers, I work in tech support, and I like programming, specifically Python and I'm learning C#/XNA.
-I love videogames, have most of the systems and a decent PC, but I have quite a lot of them, and my Steam backlog is pretty daunting as is.
-I love anime, especially Ghibli stuff, One Piece, Cowboy Bebop and the like.
-Things that are cool or neat or uncommon that you can make or are some kind of awesome local thing.
-Oh yeah, Davidsdurians reminded me, tabletop gaming is also fun!
    :|
-Clothes, I'm kind of hard to fit and shop for, and most of what I'm lacking clotheswise I'm getting from my wife or parents for Christmas.
-Beer. I love it, but know from personal experience that it is a pain in the ass to ship.

    :(
Large bulky objects, or things that serve no purpose except to be sat somewhere and displayed. Between the size of our apartment and the fact that my wife is in grad school, (horizontal) flat surfaces are at a premium and usually already covered in something.
Porn/NSFW - Things that are NSFW are a no go. So, no sextoys and what-have-you. If it's something that has merit besides its NSFWness that's fine.

For my Santa I'm not difficult to please.

    The don'ts:
No nudity beyond if you are sending a dvd/blu-ray an R rating.
No video games, I have too many in backlog as it is.

    That's about it.

I'm stealing a bit from others with these likes but:
Do think about board games, I already own Kingdom of Solomon, Lyssan, Zombicide, and Gamma World, but that should be an indicator of some of my interests as well.
I'm always up for trying locally brewed beers and vintage and again, I'm easy to please there.

I will absolutely adore anything sent my way!

And a not complete list from Amazon that should not be an indicator of my desire for very expensive things but only some hints as to my interest areas. Unless you are rich and loose with the cash, please do send all you dare. Thanks Santa!

I'm rather easy to buy for, as I prefer books. If you are not from NZUK then anything local, fiction (excepting romance) or non fiction (local history etc) from your area would interest me. I'd prefer paper books rather than an eBook, but if cash is a problem, go with your heart.

    Good Things
    • I have been known to read a book or two. I suppose I stick to the "classic" titles but i'm open to newer things. (eg. if I ended up getting the limited edition 14 color reprint of The Sound and The Fury i'd probably cry tears of joy.)
    • Comic Related (At the moment I prefer DC/Vertigo and Image over Marvel. Generally I enjoy things like The Walking Dead, Y The Last Man, Scalped, and The Boys. So less common and often without your spandex style heroes.)
    • Doo-dads and gadgets. Or in other words functional novelty items.
    • Vidja Games. Most of my gaming is on the PS3 or PC. I'm partial to things with high difficulty or little indie gems.
    • Fine spirits and booze. (I adventured into the realm of craft brews and never quite came back)
    • Painfully spicy food. Think mouth mace. I enjoy that sort of atomic catastrophe level of spice and cannot get enough of it.
    • MMA is still very very cool in my book.

      Not so good
      • Music is a bad idea because I have awful taste
      • DVDs are similarly a bad idea because I usually never watch a movie twice
      • I don't own any posters or any other forms of decoration. This is not to say i'm adverse but it's a tricky field.

I know this isn't the best list but I have been cited as difficult to shop for. Only because i'm pretty open about gifts so anything unique would be greatly appreciated. There aren't many gifts that I would find upsetting so feel free to be creative. I'll try to make an addition to the list soon once I clear the cobwebs from my brain and recall some things that i've wanted in the past.

Hey everyone. I have a ps3 and a steam acct. but I'd rather have something nifty from your neck of the woods. I love booze (I'm collecting American bourbon and rye) and clothes, though I'm very fussy about fit so something I can exchange in size if needed would be best. I love hoodies and usually wear a medium.
