You know, part of me has that itch to try out Ranger/Cleric right now. I don't know why, I just want to check it out right now. Probably go back to Kensai/Thief later.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm really digging my current playthrough. Avenger is fun, but the rest of my party is a management nightmare. Having to sink gold into keeping my reputation between 10 and 13 is really getting old.

I'll keep with it until I assemble my final crew (Ajantis, Alora, Tiax, Shar-Teel, and a dedicated Mage), but if it doesn't pick up any then, I may abandon this and play a Blade or pure Mage myself. Maybe even do a Kensage, since I haven't actually played one since 2001.

Why not just get the tweak that prevents characters from leaving if you have high/low rep. Or at least I'm assuming that's what your dilemma is.

There's a Baldur's Gate Trilogy Tweak Pack that has a version of Happy Patch that works for both BG1 and BG2.

I have it enabled via the BG2 Tweak Pack, but it doesn't seem to work with BG1 NPCs. I may enable the BGTTweaks version and see if that helps.

Edit: Well that settles it then.

been thinking about what character im going to take all the way from candlekeep to TOB, i've only been through original bg1/totsc and bg2+tob just once with a fighter back at release (thems were the days, i rushed out to buy tob expansion, the disc was faulty had to go aaaaallll the way back to the store on the bus) and been through tutu/bg1 of bgt twice as a fighter too.

thinking on dual classing but not sure which way to go or even if i'll be a fighter. i might pick ranger or something but minsc is a ranger and it seems moot. i do have a insane amount of kits installed however. plus i dont think if i go pure fighter again that he will survive what scs2 has in store from what i've been reading.

  • korodullinkorodullin What. SCRegistered User regular
Well the Ranger kits would heavily differentiate your PC from Minsc. Archers will flatten BG1 while still being excellent in BG2 while Stalkers start out good and just get so great by the end.

Also, don't count pure fighters out. Mazzy (a pure Halfling fighter) survived all of BG2 with SCS2 with ease and Korgan (pure Fighter) is absolutely incredible.

Yeah fighters are actually really good in BG2, you've got so many uber weapons floating around by then that you can really mess stuff up.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Mazzy is more like a weird Halfling Paladin though.

  • DeaderinredDeaderinred Registered User regular
hmm i will have to think on this more once i've finished installing the mods and can read through the new kits in-game. i do like walking around in full plate and packing steel, but i kinda want something new from my pc this time, some new abilities that kind of thing.

was thinking of fighter/mage since ill be loosing khalid (who is modded as such) when i get to bg2. then again he kept getting wiped out all the fucking time.

  • Professor PhobosProfessor Phobos Registered User regular
Kensai dualed to Thief at level 13, eh? I might try that. Paladin is boring and I"m not far enough along restarting is out of the question.

Well she lacks the immunities and Cleric spells of Paladins and her special character abilities are just a cherry on top of an already well-rounded character, so a CHARNAME Fighter could pretty easily replicate the insane archery results you can see from Mazzy.

I've never played any of the Baldur's Gate games and these threads have convinced me to enter the fray!

Downloading BG1 & 2 from GoG and I think I'm going for Trilogy. I have one question that I can't for the life of me find the answer to, though:

Do you get access to Kits in BG1 using Trilogy?

I've got it and like it. There are some annoying interface issues - mainly to do with the interface making it difficult to target enemies, items and doors in some situations - but the developers have already said that they have a solution in progress. Other than that, it's a smooth and fast port on my iPad 2.

honestly the most fun parties are the ones where you're constantly having to massage everybody's ego so that they get along. My favorite BG2 playthrough was with effectively a four person evil party (edwin/korgan/viconia) that cycled through all the neutral/good NPCs, killing them or running them off as I went

    NREqxl5.jpg
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget

So I've played through the Baldur's Gate series a number of times, to the point where virtually every character and location has been burnt into my mind permanently. Does BGEE provide enough new content for someone like me? Is there lots of dialogue with the new characters? I haven't followed its development at all so I'm not sure if it's worth getting.

Kuroisan the Acid Kensai, by Westley Weimer: v180 c BWP patch

God Weimer's mods are so awful.

Also how did you install this, @Deaderinred ? Did you use the BWP installer or did you install each thing manually by hand? If it's the former, link me to the installer you used because I'm now curious about how easy it is to use.

If it's the latter, seek professional help. A bartender would be a nice start.

My Morrowind mod list is as long and my New Vegas mod list is at least double that, but both of those have automatic load order sorting utilities.

To me I already have a challenge still staying invested after putting 20 hours into just side missions early on, the idea of wanting to add MORE to BG2 seems kind of crazy

Party members, maybe, but I don't trust random modders to write a character I would put up with.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

NPC mods are extremely hit or miss.

Finch in BG1 (no BG2 version yet, sadly, and there likely never will be) is fantastic. Well-written, an unusual concept (Gnome Cleric librarian), a fun little sidequest, and she is actually has high-quality voice work, which is nothing shy of a miracle.

Other BG1 NPCs I've played tend to have decent VA work as well. Gavin's is competent, if a bit boring. Mur'neth's (oh boy, another thief) works due to the heavy post-processing filters. Indira's also not bad.

BG2 NPCs tend to be a massive barrel of suck though. Hell, there's an extensive series of posts on GameFaqs that go into detail about awful BG2 NPCs.

I will say, though, that I've always wanted to stop being lazy and learn weidu so I could make my own "get Montaron in BG2" mod, where you find him alive but bound in the chest after Xzar's taken care of. Suddenly without a partner, he'd rather tag along with you than be left to the tender mercies of the Harpers. I think he'd be fun in BG2: Hitting on Mazzy, bro-ing it up with an evil PC, taunting the Rangers, forming another bodyguard/personal assassin kind of deal with Edwin, etc. Maybe even an encounter with
his former masters in the Zhentarim, who certainly wouldn't enjoy one of their agents becoming all pal-y with a Bhaalspawn (as they're followers of Bane).

Edit: @Deaderinred, you need to show the whole description of that kit. That looks absurd.

What exactly is reworked about the BG2 GUI in 1PPv4? I don't see much if any difference in screenshots.

buttons and stuff, new fonts, the actual main gameplay hud is darker and nicer looking, there is a new clock icon, the item description windows and journal look more like the scrolls versions from bg1, the background of icon boxes look much better, that sort of thing. in the readme you can see most of the differences, the new main gameplay hud "repeats" better for widescreen use.

you should see my elder scrolls and new vegas mod lists on my last runs, the new vegas one was insanely huge but still was easier to install than this.

yeah i have a few weimers mods and i forgot how they were... too late to uninstall now though hahah.

but yes i manually installed it, the auto installer thing wouldn't work with my custom mod list (though some people have got it working just fine by using the preset stuff) following the bwp pdf file, extracting all mods myself into the dir, using the fixpack batch and just following the install order guide in the pdf.

it... it takes awhile. :|i watched 5 movies during installation

about Montaron in BG2, there was a mod a guy is currently building that brings all the bg1 npcs into bg2 with full quests, dialogues and stuff. xzar and montaron have a murder mystery quest if i recall, not sure why i didnt install it. i know its not finished yet and it has a long way to go.

i almost installed vecna. i did on the last failed install but not this time, vecna is supposed to be this end game trip through the nine hells with insanely powerfull enemies meant for end of game god characters with 58 new areas.

Hahahah what. All other stats capped at 6? That's ridiculous. I guess it doesn't matter too much since 50% physical magic damage resistance is god damn insane, but 6 is kinda silly.

Screw that, we need a halfling PC romance with Mazzy. She was the coolest.

Although I always got the sneaking suspicion Patrick wasn't the first boyfriend Mazzy's had die in a dungeon

hmm apparently one of the mods is letting me multi-class a human. i am now seriously considering doing a fighter/mage and then maybe using near infinity to make it a beserker/wild mage or some shit. though if i do this i may change khalid from a fighter/mage to something else otherwise ill have too many damn mages.

what do i have look out for and what would be good stats? game is modded to wear armour while spellcasting with spell failure rates, i'm trying not to cheat this time with stat rolls (i just found an old char file, bg1start with 17 17 17 16 10 11. i think i clearly modded this)

I always wished I could multi-class and still get to choose a kit for one of the classes.

Choosing a kit for both would obviously be broken, but getting to keep level up both classes was always more fun to me, didn't have to deal with stupid downtime or planning out whether you'll switch at 9 or 12 or etc etc

hm yeah checking both shadowkeeper and nearinfinity and it seems you can only assign one kit, any kit, but only one to multiclasses. oh well.

It's actually quite easy to do this in Shadowkeeper.

Let's say you make a Fighter/Cleric multiclass, but you want the Cleric to be a Priest of Lathander. You create the character, go into the game, and make a hard (not quick or auto) save. Open Shadowkeeper, load that save game, and find your Fighter/Cleric. In the Characteristics tab, choose "Priest of Lathander" in the Kit drop-down, then go over to the Innate tab. Click the "Kit" button, find "Priest of Lathander" again, and set the level range from 001 to 001 (assuming this is a BG1 level 1 character, otherwise set it to whatever level it is) and click OK.

You now have the proper innates for your level and with the kit properly flagged in your Characteristics tab, you'll now continue to increase the kit's power as you go along.

Edit: It gets a little more complicated if you're doing something like a Thief kit (or a Stalker), since you have to factor in the lowered thieving skill points for most of the classes, but that's doable by pre-generating a level 1 thief of the kit you're wanting to assign with the race and DEX of your multiclass and compare the thieving skills of that pre-genned character with your normal one.
