With regards to social advances, you just need to look at the progress of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s or gay rights over the last decade - things can move very fast under the right circumstances.

yeah those problems are definitely fixed

Your first mistake was reading the mass effect books

The books are fairly removed from the games in terms of relations between different species. It's almost Star Wars-esque, where humanity is the default species except where Saren is concerned.

Now we've hit 100, and we can let this topic die peacefully.

    Good riddance

It should be noted that if you orchestrate it such that
Mordin survives ME3, you miss out on the most boss death scene ever. I mean, Mordin was already neck and neck with Wrex for my favorite character in the series, and you could see them setting it up from miles away, but still his death scene was just so perfect I didn't even think about resetting. When he delivers the "Had to be me, someone else might have gotten it wrong" line I was literally rolling around on the floor in a fit of character arc satisfaction, and then he sings Gilbert and Sullivan as shit is blowing up around him.

Say want you want about the rest of the game, but Bioware nailed that so hard its babies were having babies.

mordin sacrificing himself for the cure is trite and yawningly predictable

the alternative is horrible and picking it makes you horrible blah blah we've all heard it before but at the same time it sets up parallels between shepard, mordin, and maelon and fits together nearly perfectly and provides the genesis for some incredible later scenes and character work

but you knew I was going to say this

I'm sorta tired of martyrdom as a story element

it's too often used to balance the consequences of an ending

Deus Ex nailed that shit down with the Dark Age ending
and left a proper amount of ambiguity to boot
