I can see how this would affect the job market, I can see a future where there would be some kind of test that looks for your "original race" not the one you merely purchased. Also race != personality so even if you did change your race and you were from the Compton projects people would probably be able to tell and quite possibly still discriminate.
People are fucks and I'm sure would be happy to discriminate just as much as they do now.
Oddly enough, an old associate of mine who spend time working pretty much everywhere in the world told me the most racist place he had ever seen was Kenya. Apparently the white folks who were normally there for humanitarian purposes were liked well enough, but tension between the black people was really high. I guess there wasn't a whole lot of difference in skin tone, but the shape of noses, foreheads, etc would reveal what tribe a person was from. Outright hatred, discrimination, and violence were both common and accepted. He said it made the southern US look like a Coke commercial with everyone holding hands.
Is it American thing to say fractions of what race you are or is it done in Europe and Asia? I don't hear such stuff from my Latin American friends, they would say I am was born here and thats it.
I find it's generally Europeans from the a few generations back that put the most emphasis on nationality. It's like many of them have a catalog of what surnames and features belong to a certain country.

I'm half english, a quarter irish, and a quarter scottish
I don't think that I'd change my race, I'm pretty perfect looking. The combined features of German, Metis, Native American, and Scottish have formed me: the greatest looking creature in existance. Mostly German though, Germans look pretty good, I think that perhaps we should have genes in everybody, or maybe just work on concentrating this race. Who's with me?

Mums from England, grandmother on dad's side is from Holland, grandfather on that side I have no idea but its all been in Australia for at least a generation or two before him.

Although it gets kinda complicated when I try to describe my ancestry to people. 50% Finnish, thats the easy part.
50% Canadian. "Oh, so like Native?" No. Canadian. White people who used to be rich Americans but decided that no, they didn't want to keep their vast American fortunes, they would rather be merely well-off in Canada. Loyalists.
Course, it would be easy to just say that I am descended from Loyalists but most people won't know what the fuck I am talking about. Or I could say I am half descended from the British, although all my ancestors on that side were from Canada/USA for the last... 250 years.
I'm happy with my racial background. Eurasian, or Ameriasian as I guess some people prefer. My dad's family is mostly from Western Europe (mother's Italian, father is German and English), and I believe his great-grandmother on his father's side was Eastern Indian. My mom is Filipina, and her grandfather was Spanish.
I agree that dividing your background into fractions is a peculiarly American thing. The reason I have to specify my ethnicity so often is because I don't particularly look like I belong to any one, and my last name doesn't give any clues. It's German, and I definitely don't think I look German. When people ask they generally aren't satisfied with "American." Plus I'm a third culture kid, so that doesn't make explaining where I'm from any easier.

All of my family has come from Scotland - both sides. My father was born in Glasgow during the war, and my maternal great-grand mother came from Edinburgh(? I can't remember for sure on this one) to homestead in Saskatchewan at the turn of the century before moving eventually west.
But I still consider myself more Canadian than anything, quite honestly.
I always get told that my ancestors were some of the founding fathers of Canada. Apparently there is a huge old mansion in Port Hope, Ontario that my direct ancestors lived in.
Kinda cool. I only wish some of that family money had gone my way...

My mother's side is related somehow to General Wolfe, and owned a huge house like three generations back, while my father's side has a bunch of United Empire Loyalists, but is also descended from the first Canadian-born Lieutenant Governor (of New Brunswick), Lemuel Wilmot or something.
It is sort of is difficult when people ask where I'm from though, wanting to get something from the old world, although the answer is mostly England.
