By the way, if you do go that route, make sure you make backups before entering a new sector. The beacons are generated upon entry, so if they don't have the event you're looking for, you can load your old save and re-roll.
Turns out I was wrong on this, the beacons are fixed from the start of the game. Still doesn't hurt to make a backup, obviously, in case you die or aren't able to explore the entire sector. If you're into the whole save scumming business.

EDIT: A solid effort, Admiral Houn. Damn, what a way to go. Curse those plasma storms! They claim so many good lives. (Also, are you playing on normal or easy mode? Also also now I wanna do a similar "Captain's Log." thing.)
That comic was great, thanks for linking. Now I need more FTL comics!

I'm guessing it has been answered already, but is there any benefit to doing the ship unlock events (specifically the Zoltan Cruiser event) over again? I came across it again during my newest Zoltan Cruiser run, and I'm wondering if it's better to complete the event, or just blow up the rebel ship and collect the scrap if there's no real benefit to doing it the proper way again.

Generally they have very high rewards, and often will repair your ship.
Wait, wait... your crew have skills, and they can be upgraded? I did not know that. And what do the red / green dots on the map mean?
You didn't see the bars next to your crewmembers when you mouse over (maybe click?) them on the left?
Red = hostile sectors
Grren = nominally peacefulish sectors
Other than requiring certain kinds for achievements/unlocks, sectors are pretty much the same. You fight and explore in all of them. The red/purple/green affects the random flavor encounters, but I've noticed they all play the same.
Green = nominally allied to the federation or zoltan / engi / civilian
Purple = nebula = slug territory
Red = hostile to the federation or rock / rebel / mantis / pirate

I know the stealth one gives you a full repair, and I think an aug or a pile of scrap.
Also fuuucking plasma storm ruined me in sector one a run that was promising to be great. I was in the bulwark. My very first encounter was a slug interceptor, which I let run out of O2. I took 4 or 5 hull damage, but I got a hull laser 2 out of it, so it was worth it. I then managed to get 2 mantises from events and had enough scrap for a teleport. And then I landed in a plasma storm with a ship who had an anti ship drone and a missile launcher up. It was doing hefty damage. I had only enough power for my shields, O2 and the teleport. My mantises took 2 of the crew and almost got the last guy, but accidentally teleported the wrong one out and he died. And the missile had breached me somewhere and my doors were stuck open and the O2 broken. I managed to get it repaired, but with the breach and all everyone still died.
Also, I'd like it more if there wasn't that achievement on the rock ships to find the portal. I don't really like them, ESP the bulwark. The missle launchers only until you find an upgrade are quite frustrating. I've had several runs where I simply run out of ammo.
So what are you guys' favourite ships? For me I like Layout A Engi Cruiser. I just love Drones, and paired with the ion cannon you can pretty much coast through the first couple of sectors by targeting shields with the Ion weapon aimed at shields and the drone targeting weapons.
I actually liked the Kestrel B and the stealth A (haven't really used the B a lot yet). I haven't used the mantis or zoltan ships at all yet. But I really enjoyed the Stealth ship, but you GOTTA get shields first thing in those.

Oh man, finally got Rock ship B.
The Shivan? A goddamn Freespace reference in my FTL. Awesome.

My bad. You can't target the drone. I usually target their weapons with whatever the first weapon I pick up is.
If I don't get a new weapon early on due to a bad roll, against the tougher ships I will alternate the Ion weapon between Shields and Weapons. You have just long enough with a manned weapons system to keep both disabled.
@houn I think your next play is clear. You will be playing the Torus A. It will be named "Borg Donut".
The crew will have random generic numeric denominations for engi crew (4of42, 6of9, 2of8, etc.) whereas the non-engi crew will simply be called "CDR1, CDR2" etc.
Your mission? To destroy all those that do not wish to be part of your awesome collective!
tip.. tip.. TALLY.. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I'm in the middle of a pretty good Zoltan A run right now. I really like using boarding parties, but the crew I had when I got my teleporter made things rather...difficult. The only extra crew I had were to Engis. I still managed to wipe out the crew to a few other ships before I finally got a rockman and, later, a mantis.
I have to say I was extremely generous to the slaver who demanded one of my crew just now. I sent him twice what he asked for. He and his fellow crewmember did not survive.

Ah ha, glad to know that. Got a Heavy Laser I out of it. Not bad, but I need a burst cannon to pair with the EMP bomb and Halberd Beam to be able to have a chance, I think. Those burst lasers are tricky to find!
ARGH! My latest run for the crystal ship had me finally get the crystal GUY, but the last red sector? HAHA NOPE! Pirate controlled.
Heh I've been in that boat like 10 times now.

A few jumps later, and I pulled the rookie mistake of leaving autofire on when I sent my crew over to mop things up. I even remember pausing before teleporting and thinking I made sure to disable all my weapons. Boom. Bye, excellent boarding crew.
But I found another rockman to assist the other one onboard, and they became my new boarding crew! Once again I was doing extremely well. In the final jump before the Last Stand, I fought a ship and was prepared to board, but realized my rock crew wouldn't be able to take them on. Somehow I managed to accidentally teleport my crew over just as I burst lasered the ship to death. I just sort of stared at the screen for a minute when I realized what I'd done.
My ship was still well-crewed, though, so I pushed on. Beat the crap out of Rebel Flagship phase 1. Things fell apart completely in phase 2, unfortunately. I had my defense drone out to take care of the boarders, but I missed one and it got my shield room. I should have paid more attention because I thought my guys were taking him down well, but I completely forgot about the breach and two died because I didn't pump enough O2 into the ship. The drone swarm took down my shields and the rebels had themselves a Zoltan barbecue.

FUUUUUUUUCK!!!
Those 3 green sectors after start? All engi/zoltan. Got the pod on my first jump on the 2nd sector. Already had long rang scanners. 3 whole fucking sectors to get the science station and I never find it.
And then, of course, rock homeworlds.

Is there a way to autofire just one of the weapons? Or is it all or nothing?
Yes, after you've clicked on a weapon for targeting, hold left ctrl and then click your target.

Damaged stasis pod in sector 4! Zoltan facility in sector 5! Sector 6 is red, and branches off into two more red zones!
All of which are Rock territories. Once of which gives me a second damaged stasis pod. Goddammit FTL.
On the other hand that first Crystal guy was basically the reason I won the flagship fight. Lockdown is amazing. "Oh, you were going for the medbay? That's cute."

That lockdown ability would have been useful. I had a Mantis, and a Lt. King as my primary away party at the end. King was our shield system specialist and general repair engineer. But frequent boardings and his frequent availability led him to be the best fighter on the crew (non mantis fighter).
This is the first time I got to the last boss stage
I couldn't repair and went into the fight with a little under 1/4 hull integrity. I used up my last missiles taking out one of the rebel flagship's main guns, boarding party got the other one.
I had on non-missile, non-beam weapon and a level 1 offensive drone. We killed all but their last 2 crewmembers. Between stealth system, maxes shields, and maxed engines with a master pilot and engineer... we were at a stand still.
Eventually I managed to get two boarding parties on their ship at the same time and took out engines and shields... and then my beam set fires. Unfortunately, Lt. King and the Mantid were stuck on the enemy bridge while fires spread through the ship and a blast volley finally ALL hit.
The Escelcior ('x' key didn't work, got a new keyboard now) survived with one point in hull integrity left. Lt. King and his new Mantid buddy were goddam heroes and went down at the helm of the enemy flagship. They steered the remains of the ship into the rebel escorts as it broke apart.
At the session summary I saw that King holds both the most combat kills and most skill masteries of the 4 play sessions I've done so far. <sniff> Goddam hero.
This was an odd run. First things first, I unlocked the Zoltan Cruiser - yippie!
Started out with the Engi Ship and before hitting Sector 7 I had everything: Shields up to 3, Engines on 5, 45% evasion, 6 crewmembers and still 200 scrap to spare. You know why? BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE STORE IN THIS RUN THAT SOLD WEAPONS! >:(
edit: Forgot to mention that this was my first run where I didn't have a Defense I drone when hitting Sector 8. What a bummer.
I've had that Todesbart. Is no fun going into the Last Stand with basic weapons. In other news, I think I'm going to give up purposeful runs for the Crystal Ship. I've been avoiding playing the Zoltan and Mantis ships to unlock the B variant so I could find this crystal cruiser on the Rock Ship. Well, I think I'm done with that simply because it's making the game not fun for me.

I took the Crystal guy and Kazaak into my most lopsided flagship victory. It was a pretty cool crew.
I made a game! Hotline Maui. Requires mouse and keyboard.
Mantis and crystal boarding party, two burst crystal guns, a breach bomb 2, and a boarding drone. Never felt so OP. No air, picked off 1v2, shields do nothing, and your system room has three hull breaches and an assault drone. You so screwed.
Ugh couldn't even get a stasis pod in 5 runs tonight.

I haven't seen this posted, and open spoiler for modding at your own discretion, temptation to cheat might be too much
By the second sector I had my crew almost filled up and was using a teleporter to take a ship. Clicked "autofire" off for my weapons so they wouldn't destroy the ship with my crew still aboard.
I didn't expect it but all weapons fired next cycle killing my mantid and rockman... I think may targeting computer is a HAL 9000. Crew morale has been crushed.

If you turn off autofire you still have to cancel the current order for all weapons or they will fire once more.

Mantis B and Crystal B are the only ones with 4 room teleporter. Its awesome. Also if you are trying to unlock ships, finding or taking a ship with the long range sensor augment is really helpful.
