The Black Bolt moment in Hickman's NA showed better use in two panels than Bendis ever did with that character in his entire series

The art for Captain Marvel has been all over the place. I'm not sure why the book has such a rotation for the artists, but I think it's hurt the book a little, despite the overall quality of the art itself.

Launching a new title for a character with a new look without having a consistent style doesn't strike me a good idea anyway.

Probably why no one can agree on Carol's look, too.

Captain Marvel #9 finally pushed me over the edge on this book, I was enjoying it fine, but this issue just clicked perfectly for me. I loved it.

This issue felt like it was copping Hawkguy's "Avenger's Day Off" routine in a good way. The pacing and paneling was often genius.

Also it had the best cover.

Fraction and DeConnick are married, so they're bound to influence each other somewhat.

    Heh.

That's why I love Marvel. You'd never see Batman and Superman walking down the street naked because of a bet, while the Flash takes pictures of them.

Well, DC has more characters with secret identities than Marvel.
Marvel did have that whole registration act and Civil War thing after all.

Ultimate Comics Iron Man #4 was a pretty nice conclusion to the miniseries, and great ultimazation of the Mandarin (It is a machine AI that uses humans to do it's dirty work aka the opposite of Tony Stark the man who uses Machines). Rhodes/ War Machine was pretty baller too., and his armor up / battle is the motw for the book.

Dang it Bendis, Wolverine would not use the phrase "I must say". I'm sorry, that just sticks out like a sore thumb.

  • ElderlycrawfishElderlycrawfish Registered User regular
"I must say, bub." would have been much more in character.

yeah but it still reads as a bizarre word choice to me

"I gotta say, seriously" would, I think, fit the character better

Speaking of New Avengers, did anyone notice that at least one of the alternate Earths in the two red splash panels near the end of the issue was the DC Universe? Hickman is a glorious bastard.

I forget, does DC have a Squadron Supreme except with the Avengers?

    because they totally should.

  • SolarSolar Registered User regular
No because DC editorial is up it's own ass

also yeah that is the Squadron Supreme verse duders

which, incidentally, is where Avengers Hyperion is from (I think?)

  • BalefuegoBalefuego Registered User regular
Hyperion is part of the Squadron Supreme but there have been multiple Hyperions in Marvel history, so there's no way to know where this one is from, he may be a brand new one.

  • Centipede DamascusCentipede Damascus Registered User regular
I think Hickman's said the Hyperion that's showing up in Avengers is one that hasn't been used before

Nah. It started out as a gag but the Squadron Supreme verse is very much it's own thing at this point.

Using context clues, I'm gathering that Squadron Supreme is Marvel doing their own little tongue-in-cheek version of the Justice League?

  • Centipede DamascusCentipede Damascus Registered User regular
    Indeed.

Recommended: The Super Hero Squad episode "Whom Continuity Would Destroy", where Hyperion (Superman), Power Princess (Wonder Woman), and Nighthawk (Batman) show up. Nighthawk is voiced by Adam West.

One of the alternate universes in Final Crisis was also a thinly-veiled Marvel universe, IIRC. I might be thinking of the Superman/Batman one, though.
