Yeah, Bolling got completely screwed over by the state Republican party re primary/convention, despite the earlier agreements. Counting his vote as in the bag for R's here is, uh, premature to say the least.
Is "fuck off. . ." the new ". . .goose" or w/e it is?
Seriously, this is a topic about which you know nothing.
Is there some secret Virginia Internet that only Virginians have access to, preventing anyone not from the state from Googling and becoming abreast of current Virginia politics in oh. . .10 minutes?
And "coup" is a bit melodramatic; shady definitely. Underhanded probably.
I just don't trust Republicans to do right by much anything these days, records be damned.
Sorry, I just don't generally react well to people telling other people that their reactions are unwarranted based on what they read two minutes ago on Wikipedia.
Here's the deal with a tie breaking vote in the Senate, particularly as it pertains to Bolling: Virginia's Constitution is unclear on what specifically the Lieutenant Governor is allowed to vote on, so Bolling considered past AG opinions from periods where the State Senate was split and then issued a memorandum to establish a precedent on what he is and is not willing to issue a vote on. The rule of thumb is that on issues where the Constitution mentions Senators or members elected, he won't bother voting because he doesn't feel like he's constitutionally entitled.
Considering that the chief goal during redistricting in 2011 was incumbent protection and thus ensconced a fairly intractable 20/20 split, that seems like a terrible deal for Senate Republicans. Because the state constitution says explicitly that Senators vote on judges, so Bolling won't even try voting to confirm judges nominated by Governor McDonnell and presumably a future Governor Cuccinelli. It also says the same thing about budgets, so Democrats can effectively prevent the state's legislature from passing a budget they don't like.
This move is actually pretty important precisely because it's attempting to mitigate the role of the Lieutenant Governor as Bolling has defined it.
For bonus class with a capital K, they then adjourned in the memory of Stonewall Jackson.
Gotta love southern Republicans.
ffffffffffffffffffffff
I mean come on! I really hope someone finds some legal bullshit they can use to overturn this just on principle at this point. This is the biggest fuck you ever. [hyperbole engaaaage]
On the bright side, I just realized it can't have been a holiday when my mom was in school because Dr King was still alive. So we are more recently terrible on that front.

The entire holiday in Virginia is recognized as Lee Jackson King day. I believe this has been the case since my mom was in school.
It's a four-day weekend with Lee-Jackson day being on the Friday and MLK Jr day being on the Monday now.
Though, the Sons of the Confederacy still parade down their Avenue of Second Place Trophies in Richmond over the weekend in full Confederate garb.
I hate living here sometimes.
Do people at least get Friday off to, like, violently masturbate themselves sans lube to interracial porn, or whatever it is one does for Jackson/Lee day?
This is really overblown. It's effective 2016 (meaning the Nov 2015 elections). We have a gubernatorial election this year. If Cuccinelli wins, state politics are in a much worse position than it is now anyway. If he loses, that means Democrats have a senate majority (since they'll have the tie breaking vote) and they'll have plenty of chances to undo this before 2015.
Edit: I'm dumb, Republicans would still almost certainly control the House, so Senate Dems wouldn't be able to undo it. Still, outside of it being a pretty sneaky move, it's not really unexpected or any worse than you see in other states.

I think it's more the shock of the balls of the Republican Party here than the severity of what they actually did.
Honestly, I hope they keep doing more shit like this so people wake up and stop god damned voting for them.

I think you will find that quite a few of them are more than happy to continue voting that way because, "I don't care if they play dirty so long as we win."

Well, yeah, but the problem with Democrats not winning is low voter turnout. Get them pissed off enough and they'll actually vote in off-off years.
80% of our State-level seats went unchallenged in 2011. That's what Republicans count on.

It's not just that they're uncontested, they're uncontested because a lot of them are drawn to be noncompetitive, and it's tough as shit to persuade someone to sink a year of his life into running in a district that Barack Obama lost by 10 points with 98% name ID and a record-breaking war chest.

UPDATE #7: Chelyen Davis tweets, "@lgbillbolling spokeswoman says Bolling wouldn't have voted for redistricting, "has grave concerns... it's not something he supported." Verrry interesting, he can't be pleased about this (makes it more likely he'll run as an indy?).
UPDATE #8: Jeff Schapiro tweets, "Even @BobMcDonnell is steamed over surprise re-redist maneuver by fellow R's in #Va Senate; worried it threatens his agenda." Nice.

No, we changed that back in 2000 [to much bellyaching amongst the Commonwealth's conservatives]; MLK day is today and Lee Jackson is appaerntly the friday beforehand, wiki says
I've lived in this state for almost 2 years and I still have absolutely zero knowledge of its politics.
That's not surprising. Less than 40,000 people vote in any given state senate race because voter ignorance or apathy is such an obvious biproduct of putting state leg elections between Congressional midterms and the Presidential election that I'd only be half joking to say that it's intentional.
That type of apathy is why the GOP keeps winning state elections despite sucking and being unpopular. it does have national effects on the federal level too. Like how do you think they had the power to gerrymander all those congressional districts? Most places the state govt handles that shit.

No because they don't control the committees.
I doubt it has anything to do with a Black president being sworn in on MLK day, right?

Long story short: At least in the Metro Richmond region, a lot of the state and local politics sucks ass.
That's not surprising. Less than 40,000 people vote in any given state senate race because voter ignorance or apathy is such an obvious biproduct of putting state leg elections between Congressional midterms and the Presidential election that I'd only be half joking to say that it's intentional.
