99 pages of code in the thread,
    99 pages of code.

If one of those pages should happen to bug,
There'll be 871 pages of codSegmentation fault
    Core dumped

I had a VM based development laptop for an Oracle project that my work supplied.

8 cores, 16 GB RAM, etc. etc.

    Yeah, that worked out alright.

Seems like, you know, putting that shit right on the laptop might have worked better. Slightly.

How do I put a three server farm right on the machine?

    MAGIC

So since I'm going to applying to a big deal place in the near future, I've been trying to get my resume all awesomed up. Anyone willing to look over it? No big deal either way just thought I'd look for some opinions here once I finish.

Sure, I'm trying to track down a memory leak right now, and I'm just watching statistics right now, and figuring out ways of debugging this legacy app.

    A distraction might be nice!

    AHHHHH

    THEY'RE LEAKING OS HANDLES

    *FROTHING AT THE MOUTH*

    Edit: DAMN IT

Seriously - that trick that @bowen linked to earlier with the smart pointers?

It's seriously priceless. It's RAII at its best.

I something similar all the time for stuff like critical sections, and OS resources that must be freed.

If the guys who wrote this had done something similar, they wouldn't be leaking these handles.

Now, I'm not sure if it's *this* leak that's causing the product to crash after 17 hours of operation, but GRAHGHHGSDKLFJKLSD:FJSDFKLJ

    Frustrating.

I love it when what was going to be a 200 line Python script turns into a 1800 line monstrosity. And I spent all morning going through the pachinko machine of volatility surface fits to end up in the R codebase again. Think it's fixed but the job takes 5 hours to run so we'll only know tomorrow.

Man, I say this everytime the topic comes up, but I really can't believe how you (US) Americans can deal with your crazy labor laws. I have a hard time even understanding the concept of "sick time". I don't think I could ever work outside of our European socialist wonderland. There's a huge cultural gap here.

How's it handled over there? Now that I'm Staff and not a contractor I get "unlimited" sick. I think that's how it should be everywhere. 1) I don't get anyone else sick by forcing myself in. 2) I don't lower my own fucking morale banging on the keyboard with a sinus infection so I work harder and better when I get back.

Here in Germany, we basically have unlimited sick days by law. You get full pay for up to 6 weeks (consecutively with the same illness). If I'm out for some reason for 3 months in a year with different causes and none of those causes adds up to 6 weeks, then my employer has to pay me in full for the whole time. I think if you get the same disease again within a certain period (one year or half a year or something like that) then the days will be added up and counted as if they were consecutive.

After the 6 weeks you get "sick pay" from health insurance (which is pretty much mandatory). That is 70% of your gross income, but no more than 90% of your net income.

Also if we get sick while on vacation, we get the vacation days back. (So if I take a 2 week vacation and get a doctor's note for 3 days of those 2 weeks, my employer has to refund me those 3 vacation days.)
