They changed the law on my mortgage credit for this year! Now it's capped at $2000 and is deducted from the mortgage interest deduction. Dropped my credit amount from over $7K to just $2000. That change basically cut my return amount in half. It cost me a couple thousand bucks!
Man, fuck. That is really disappointing. I was gonna rebuild my back fence with that money.

“Are you a born writer? Were you put on earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action.

I basically hate feeling like I've got any obligation to anyone beyond what I have personally and explicitly signed up for
I don't see how telling teenagers to contribute meaningfully is going to get them to do it unless they're already the sort to have that attitude
Have you watched My Super Sweet 16?
A lot of teenagers are direly ignorant of the world around them and could desperately stand to grow as people by putting something else ahead of themselves for a while.
But again, I hasten to add that none of this has anything to do with whether or not we should have skate parks or kid-safe hangouts or any of that.
I have some difficulty believing the people on that show are real, as opposed to playing it up for the cameras (or being encouraged to do so). But also, I don't really care for the petty trials of the super-rich.
EDIT: Also, I object to using that show to say "a lot of teenagers". Across the runtime of it there's what, probably less then a 1000 people in a self-selecting group on display. It's hardly "a lot".
oh, I'm sure it's as carefully cast as the Jersey Shore. Nonetheless, I grew up and live in a richy-rich suburb and a lot of my schoolmates were unworldly clods about anyplace that wasn't their specific neighborhood or, like, Cabo or Aspen.

You know, that's probably the first time I've ever seen the concept "You owe the world something" spelled out that explicitly.
I don't care for it.
I think we all owe the world a bit, actually. Nothing we do is without consequence and a life spent not trying to at least improve the little patch of earth around us or the lot of the people we care for is a wasted experience. But that blithering fuckwit of a judge should just as well be telling people his own age that. Teens are a bit solipsistic but a) that is normal, b) many still want to pitch in as much as anyone else, and c) wanting to have fun is normal and doesn't mean someone isn't "mowing the lawn" or not looking for a job or any of that nonsense.
See funnily enough I actually agree to a certain degree with what the judge said but it's just said in such a manner that I can't help but bristle at it and find it really distasteful.
On a note that doesn't really regard myself personally and is more a general idea, I feel like telling kids who are doing potentially destructive things to make themselves more productive to society is folly, because they probably haven't discovered a proper outlet for whatever lack of purpose they might feel in life. Giving them something fun and productive to do to spend their time with like public recreation just feels like the correct thing to do.
It's hard to really articulate what bugs me about it personally, though. I aspire to do good things in my life, but I don't have some major goal in terms of what I want to do or feel like I want to leave anything significant behind. It really just boils down to helping people close to me, basically mostly my friends and family, except it feels like it's all a bit muddied by the fact that I only really have the means to look out for myself at the moment. Maybe I just haven't gotten far enough yet that I have a clear picture of what I could do. I guess in the end I don't want to feel like my choice in how I spend my time is invalidated because I'm not actively striving to make the world better.
hah. I have a coworker and friend that is really into BMX, he's only a couple years younger than me. He still struggles with cops giving him a hard time. Only, you know, he's near 30 and knows the laws about public property etc.
And no I didn't complain. I said give them a place to skate or accept the inevitable.
Yeah, complain was the wrong word. Sometimes my grasp of the English language fails me.
Skateboarder punks just gives me a 80s vibe. These days it's all about gangs and meth. Sometimes pirates.
hehehe, listening to a lecture series on the various forms of Christianity which did not survive the first 3 centuries.
The "Secret Gospel of Mark" is perhaps the greatest and most elaborate troll in the history of mankind.
Give us the gist of it.
very, very short version:
an extremely prominent, respected and skilled scholar of the New Testament forged a document purporting to be one of the 2nd century church fathers quoting an unknown gospel, the "Secret Gospel of Mark". There are two quotes and one of them is pretty much straight up a story about Jesus being gay (least subtle ineundo ever).
anyway, what makes it intersting is the degree of skill of the forgery. This scholar spend the last decades of his life having every expert he could find try to authenticate it. Even today it's not certain it was a forgery.
TLDR: an old dude pulled off a caper which resulted in the worlds leading experts on the bible spent 20 years trying to authenticate "Jesus was gay".

I think what bothers me most about the newspaper clipping is that the advice is just so grossly out of touch. Like, not even getting into bootstraps v childhood, it's just a pitiful list of bootstrap suggestions. A lovely mixture of chores, shit no parent would allow it 2013, and the sort of volunteerism that bootstrappers adore up until they're asked to personally contribute. There's a lot of ways to improve yourself and the world but washing windows and drowning in the river are not among them.

It certainly has to be an organic process, imho. You can't force people to spend 100% of their free time at a homeless shelter or rescuing kittens from trees -- nor is that necessarily better than any other way to spend your time, necessarily.
But I will definitely say that "How does my existing positively impact the people around me, and potentially humanity generally?" is a good approximation of The Point of My Life.

There's a thing about teenage brains and a self-oriented frame of reference that is strikingly obvious when it's pointed out a couple of times. Often, experiences are processed beginning with "how this affects me". Even charity and selflessness runs through that self-oriented frame.
