Final Fantasy 7 PC !

EliminationElimination Registered User regular
Ok so it's on sale on the square store so i picked it up. It's been good fun so far replaying it at a sharper res. I've heard that there are mods out there that make the game a bit prettier and the music better, i've looked it up but there's so much out there I don't know what's what.

Hoping that some of my fellow gamers here can point me in the right direction at the good mods that are worth getting !

I'm not entirely sure those mods work on the new version of PC FF7, since they were made for the original PC version? I'm sure one of the people more involved in the community that worked on said mods can chime in with more info here.

A dude named @halkun that posts on these forums was working on something called Q-Gears:q-gears.sourceforge.net/index.phtml?content=3

I dunno if it works for the new version, but he might know. And he probably knows about different mods.

The screen shot portion of that site doesn't work, but it seems interesting.

Yea, we've been taking FF7PC apart for the last 10 years or so... On our forum we talk all about the game and mods available. Keep in mind that we are *very* piracy minded there and though we give you the keys to a lot of stuff, doing things like breaking the DRM, or or putting in models from other games (for example from FF7:Crisis Core or FF7:Dirge of Cerberus) is frowned upon.

You are probably going to want Bootleg, which is our package manager for FF7 mods. It will also convert your FF7 executable to something a little more mod friendly (and also retain the copy protection, so no sneaky stuff!)

You probably want to get yourself familiar with this too which digs a little deeper into the mod thing.

Here's a quick run down of what we've been doing.

    1) Bootlog - FF7 mod package Manager (see above)

    2) Q-Gears - A replacement for the FF7 executable and also a RPG engine in it's own right (Incomplete, but under development)

    3) Team Avalanche - Project to re-render the backgrounds to HD resolutions (Under development)

That stuff looks pretty cool. The high res re-render especially, those low-res renders really hurt the game in its current format. Definitely one of it's biggest problems. So this Bootleg thing converts my version into a more moddable version of the game? I see it also kills the cloud saving feature of the new version on the PC, which is unfortunate, i kind of enjoy being able to play it on my desktop then on my laptop with the same saves. :( Is it because most of the mods were intended to be used with the old PC version ?

The game originally came with a plug-in system for graphics. The exe is actually the same, but the new graphics driver intercepts the executable to do things like cloud saves and achievements. We replace it with our graphics plug-in which is more mod-friendly, but loses those extra functions. The saves, however are very small and can be moved about on a Google drive or thumb drive.

There is even a utility to convert saves from PS1 memory card format to PC and back again (PS3/PSP saves can be converted to PC, but not the other way around due to encryption)
