    Oh my god

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

the prophesy for the next pope is
112 Peter the Roman, who will Nourish the sheep in many tribulations; when they are finished, the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people. The end.

    THIS IS IT

    They're rebooting the Crusades?

    Directed by J.J. Abrams

I hear Zack Synder is going to direct a spin-off where they just sack Venice instead.

If the prospect of being the first of their friends to get laid didn't entice them into the church, nothing will.

Sources are kind of hazy and I only saw this written once, but apparently there hasn't been a resignation in something like 800 years.*

*note: this could be wrong, I have not checked

From some quick checking up, looks like you're correct. Apparently Pope Gregory XII resigned in 1415 to end the Papal Schism.

Well there is also the legend/possible Vatican cover up (more likely legend) of the woman who dressed as a man for years who rose to pope who was eventually outed when she gave birth.

    On a horse.

yeah I've got a historian friend who is kind of boggled by this

if you don't count Gregory XII being forced out then the last voluntary resignation was 1290

Resigning is actually kind of stupid. He was ordained by God. He's saying he knows better.

Yeah, this is the main reason I think there's a deeper reason here. JP2 was sick for years and didn't give up.

Man, I'm Catholic and I had no clue that a pope could resign. I thought it was till death as well. Really interesting.

I guess technically he's not turning in his vows, he's simply stepping away from his position, like an Archbishop would do. (I think technically he is the Archbishop of Rome.)

    Time to do historical research!

Holy shit, I love pope history. It is the silliest history.
    Wikipedia wrote:
In 1045, in order to rid the Church of the scandalous Pope Benedict IX, Pope Gregory VI paid Benedict to resign the papacy in his favour.[6] Gregory himself resigned in 1046 because the arrangement he had entered into with Benedict was considered simony. Gregory's successor, Pope Clement II, died in 1047 and Benedict IX became Pope again.

I have a theory that there is a connection between the Pope resigning and the Archbishop of Canterbury resigning.

Maybe they are secret lovers and they're just going to leave this whole damn world behind.

Please tell me someone has written this fanfiction already.
