I guess I would just end up accusing the person who said it of internalizing the language of white racism, and suggest they break free of the rhetorical chains in which they're bound. Additional slavery metaphor, blatant accusation that the opinion is an example of patriarchy instead of a protest against it, etc.

The U.S. government spent about $2.2 billion last year to provide phones to low-income Americans, but a Wall Street Journal review of the program shows that a large number of those who received the phones haven't proved they are eligible to receive them ... A review of five top recipients of Lifeline support conducted by the FCC for the Journal showed that 41% of their more than six million subscribers either couldn't demonstrate their eligibility or didn't respond to requests for certification ... The FCC until last year allowed consumers to self-certify, without requiring documentation, that they met federal poverty guidelines. Subscribers didn't have to recertify once they were enrolled in the program, and there were few checks on whether households signed up for more than one cellphone.

The Obamaphone "scandal" is something meant to anger old (white) voters who don't realize how important a cell phone is these days

Why back in my day you walked into the door and shook the owner's hand and you had a job by crikey, you didn't need to telemephone or fancy futuristic cellular phone (which is cheaper than a landline)

The FCC said new verification procedures saved nearly $214 million last year, and projected total savings over the next three years would reach $2 billion. Disbursements under the program began to drop in the third quarter after 12 consecutive quarters of increases.

I know about the Obamaphone lady

Doesn't change the fact that it was started by Reagan and the specific expansion the WSJ article is talking about was a Bush policy

What do you mean, "Ironic Racism?"

I mean jokes where you pretend to be racist but it's not really racist because it's a joke.

With scare quotes because I don't really observe the distinction.

i kind of don't understand this position

I guess it's like death of the author shit. Like, all I know about Seth McFarlane is that he makes Family Guy. So when he (or one of his writers, I guess) writes a homophobic joke or whatever, all that is presented is the homophobic joke. There isn't a disclaimer that the real joke is that anyone would make such a joke (and I'm not advocating such a disclaimer; jokes that need explanation are not good jokes)... as far as anyone can reasonably tell, it is what it is. A statement where the humor capitalizes on bigoted assumptions without challenging them.

Ironic racism to me sounds like when you make a joke about or allude to a stereotype and the joke is funny because of how blatantly stupid and absurd the stereotype is

Like if Chu were to say he's been cutting his spending and saving up for something important and I made some absurd reference to Jewish folk and money, or the international conspiracy backing his efforts
