It isn't at all as cool as it used to be in RO1. I maxed it here for when I have to AoE hold agro on stuff in dungeons because pretty much all bosses have the "I'm gonna spawn some random adds at different intervals" mechanic

Getting grouped together with ESL countries is really getting aggravating to me. It's bad enough half the quest text is barely understandable. But the culture and language differences trying to communicate with other players just frustrates me to no end. Lots of spam, they don't understand what I mean over half the time when talking to them. They ask me stuff in annoying and rude ways etc... sigh.

Put in a little bit of time, but the combat is just so boring (to me). This game totally feels like a more 3D, modern graphic'd version of the original Ragnarok, with all that implies.

What is this I don't even.

Yeah I agree. It def feels RO but prettier and 3D. You can even adjust the controls.camera to be like that of the original RO. RO was good back when it came out in the infancy of MMO's in general, but RO2 feels dated because of its adherence to the originals grindy gameplay. I get why they did it, but I just don't think it is the game for me, I am too spoiled by modern games I suppose.

I was hoping for RO's charm, combined with at least vanilla WoW period game design. Alas, only the former delivered.

The music isn't as good as RO either, i find its short and stops too often, in the original RO it would always be playing music all the time and the music was excellent.

Hmm, I was playing this the other day just fine, but now when I try to launch it, it just opens the Ragnarok2 Updater, fills about halfway and just closes. There aren't any processes running involving RO2 and I can't seem to get it to open again...Gonna see if I can find out how to fix this. In the mean time- What would be the best class to go Solo route? I'm guessing they're all pretty similar in that regard, but was just curious.

edit: After looking around, the general theory is IP Block causes this and the fix is a proxy. Meh.

Appears to have fixed itself. Very odd, all the posts I found concerning that were fixed with a proxy. Oh well, works now.

Ro's Sprites and music were like 75% of the charm. This game has none of that, which is why I got bored after 10minutes. It's unfortunate.

I think the servers exploded yesterday for a bit, so that might be the problem you had.

Personally, I love the art in this game. I think it's an excellent transition from the sprites in 1. Not a game music fan in general, so I can't comment on that.

My main problem so far has just been the input delay on attacks makes battle feel unresponsive. That's possibly just a problem with certain classes. My knight feels really clunky, but my sorc doesn't feel that way at all.
Whereas in 1, I don't remember any classes feeling clunky at all.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this, just not happy with Playpark.

Edit: I also miss awesome cards.

I tried this the other day, unfortunately the game crashed to desktop without any error messages after I tried to start playing on the first toon I made. I might give it a go in the future, but for now I'll just take the experiences described in this thread as an indication that it's an ~ok~ Korean Grindfest with a nostalgia factor.

My archer was beyond clunky. The ability that makes you leap back basically teleported me 10m back, left the character hanging upside-down in mid-air for a second, then went "okay, continue" and put me back down.

The knights charge does pretty much the same thing except it moves towards the enemy. Usually to where it was before it went agro on you so you fly somewhat past it. :\

I think that the first attempt at a sequel was much better than this current incarnation. From the visuals to music, the earlier (scrapped) version seemed a lot better. The current game just seems so bland, and like others have mentioned, kind of clunky. There's a lot of gui clutter as well.

I can't seem to use max resolution either, keeps telling me that it can only go up to desktop res, but my desktop is higher than it allows?

Hmm, it actually seems a lot slower paced than the original RO. Back then, the skills went off quicker, and you could mob pretty easily. A poring didn't take like six or seven hits to kill in the beginning, for example.

  • LucidLucid Registered User regular
This game is really boring. It seems everything is extremely linear, feels like you're on rails or something. For example, there doesn't seem to be any room for player skill in combat. In the original game, you could take your low level character against some higher level monsters, like say an acolyte healing zombies, and level up faster if you were able to maneuver well enough and time things properly. Seems impossible to do anything like that in this game. You can't do any kiting of monsters as they'll simply warp back to their spot and regain full health. There's no room for ingenuity, the game play is very limited.

It's simply kill x number of monsters per area, then boss type monster, then move to next area, again and again. There was one very brief escort quest so far(like walking twenty feet) and that's the only variation I've encountered in twelve levels.

The official English version is launching on the 1st: http://www.playragnarok2.com/news/article/37

If RO1 is any guide, anyone not in Asia is going to be locked out of the Playpark server the moment this goes live.

So quick question, I gather stats/skills still work like they did in RO1, but is there any sort of respec system? Or do you still need to have your entire build planned out from the second you start your character, or else be doomed to eternal not-awesomeness?

I think respecs are available through the kafra shop, though stats definitely are not as important in this game as they are in RO1. The skill trees are pretty well organized and helpful but you may want to plan ahead and decide which of the later level/second class skills you will want and their pre-reqs.

I just started playing this today and I'm hooked. I've got my main and second job up to 12. Are there any dungeons or party areas that I'll be getting in range for soon? I've just been doing a lot of the beginner quests so far. I did get to meet the king though! :P

Also, are cards destroyed when you unequip them? I came across a dragonfly card and used it as I only had the beginner cards beforehand, I don't want to lose it. I still don't understand the card system in RO2. Also money. I do not understand money.

So I started playing this last night. And I like the graphic style, but I immediately started feeling the repetitive grind. I'm only lvl 9 and I feel like it's just going to be more of the same as I level. Anyone on a higher level that can confirm that?

I'll probably stick with it a bit either way.

so... the draw of this game is not to sit and farm the same mob for several hours in hopes it will drop an awesome piece of loot? honestly that was one of the reasons i liked ro 0_0

Yes and no, it took a more dungeon format, and the card system has changed.. It feels like the old ro in terms of battle, with the streamline system of WoW.

Yeah but the problem is the quests aren't too interesting :(

I've gotten to lvl 10 so far and it's been kind of a slog but it's a game i feel like I can play without paying too much attention so it hasn't worn on me just yet.

The problem with quests is that they're just part of the grind. That's it, there isn't anything about them that changes things up at all.

I downloaded this last night on steam, and of course the servers were down so I couldn't play, I'm a bit sad that this game apparently isn't very much like the original ro, but since its free I'll give it a shot

Seriously, this game is like a more grindy, less engaging WoW. During the two hours or so I put into it, I didn't find a single redeeming thing about it other than that it was called Ragnarok Online. It doesn't have the charm of RO1, it doesn't make some exciting changes or improvements to MMO's, it doesn't even try adorably and fail to produce something new and interesting.

What is this I don't even.

What's keeping me going right now if that my character is absolutely adorable. But outside of that it's just a mindless thing to do while watching a show or something so far.

I do like that my thief can teleport to enemies though. And some of the bigger enemies are actually tough fights where I have to be very careful. But so far those are few and far between and I just mindless mash my buttons for the vast majority of enemies. (Well not "mash" but the combo of 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3 gets a bit repetitive)

The art style is cute though, and while the VA is atrocious the sound effects are classic so I like that part.

Oh and I love the music.

Yeah, I think the people who will dig this are the ones who just absolutely HAVE to play this kind of art style and this cultural setting and everything, and none of the other anime-esque MMO's right now are doing it for you.

Maybe. Although I wouldn't say I HAVE to play this style, it is just a style I enjoy. But then again I much prefer stylized games to ones that go for realism for the most part. (Wildstar vs Neverwinter for example)

And honestly most of the anime-esque mmos I have played have a pretty atrocious style to them. I think the only other one that kind of nailed it in recent memory was Tera. Most of the other ones I have tried have either been so far over the top that they were just insulting (Scarlet Blade, I saw the gameplay and couldn't even bring myself to even TRY it it was just that bad), or so cheaply done that it was just too horrible to play.

This one is simple, but the characters are well done, the animations aren't anything to write home about but they are in line with the style and fairly detailed. The monster designs are classic RO so they have that going for them. The environments are a bit sparse thus far and don't seem that well designed. The music is pleasant and very nice, the sound effects are decent, but the VA is really bad (Mostly its that the chosen voices don't match the look of the character they are assigned to)

The quests are boring and as someone else mentioned its just more added to the grind, but RO to me has ALWAYS been about the grind so I pretty much went into it expecting that I would have to mindlessly grind monsters for a long time to progress.

If I didn't know about RO1 or wasn't that familiar with MMOs I would probably hate this game, but I think it's ok mostly because I am not expecting much of anything from it besides some mindless slaying of thousands of cutesy critters.

Sorry for not following up on the guild suggestion, I've been a bit busy as I have to hand in my final university papers next week. I'm still happy to make it, though I am GMT so we'd need to co-ordinate some time where I could meet you and invite you, but we need a name first! Preferably something PA related. I'll try to think of something too.

Even though the feel of the gameplay is completely different to RO1 it does seem to have that same friendly community element. In RO1 I hated all of the grinding but the experience of going somewhere interesting with a party of friendly people was what made it all worthwhile, and it's been the same so far in RO2. Even when you're just getting parties together to blow through the quests as quickly as possible, the somewhat monotonous combat system leaves lots of space for conversation. :P
