AC [challenge] 36: Get Your Cray-on

DMACDMAC Come at me, bro!Moderator mod

Remember when you were 6 and opening a new box of crayons was the best feeling ever? Time to re-live the experience!

crayons1.jpg

THE CHALLENGE:
Crayons are inexpensive, often inconsistent, and fragile. Your challenge is to apply some wax sticks to paper and see what you come up with. Linework is fine, just do what you can using traditional media-coloring only!

DEADLINE: Wednesday, May 22

For those of you who frequent the conceptart.org forums this should be pretty familiar; tens of artistic combatants thrown together in to an artistic arena, each struggling for the honor of being dubbed a master of the visual arts. Those of you who succeed will be bathed in glory and the blood of their competitors, those of you who fail will be exiled to a life of shame and isolation.

The aim of this thread is to try and spice things up a bit here in the ol' Artist's Corner. This thread is for entries in to the challenge or the discussion thereof. If you'd like to suggest a topic for the weekly challenge, go right ahead, but understand that the last winner of the challenge has total control over the task (unless they have won more than two challenges in a row, see rules).

The rules are simple;

RULES:

* A contestant cannot win more than two challenges in a row.
* Winner gets the privilege of choosing the next challenge.
* Winner also gets the honor of picking the winner of the next challenge.
* At the end of a challenge, the thread is locked and a new one is begun.
* Stick to the challenge topic; no going off on a tangent.
* All formats welcome, whether they be traditional or digital; 2D or 3D; still or animated.

If you're looking for inspiration, check out the aforementioned conceptart.org forums (specifically the creature/environment/character of the week sections).

Crayons were forged by the devil to make people who are pretty good with a pencil feel like an ape with his first set of finger paints.

  • earthwormadamearthwormadam ancient crust Registered User regular
If they were forged by the devil, then why are they so delicious?

My 98 yr old great grand-mother hooked me up with some crayons back in 98 (she was born in 1900), the copper crayon was green...
RIP grandma, thanks for ruining color theory...

I guess I will have to commit a crayon heist at my old school then! It will be like stealing candy from a kid, except it's actually stealing crayon from a kid...

I'm stealing some from work, so I'm only slightly not as bad as you, stealing from old people.

    Stay out of my territory.

Hard pressed on my right. My center is yielding. Impossible to maneuver.
    Situation excellent. I am attacking.

I had fun with the first one, so I decided to keep going...I mean, I am now the proud owner of a 64 box ( With built-in sharpener! ) so best put them to use. I'll spoiler tag it, as my first submission stands and I don't want to confuse anyone with multiple submissions.

Thanks. I'm learning as I go ( not just crayons, but art in general ), which is why I decided to start posting here. Hoping the constructive criticism will help me improve.

I wanted to do cool serious things with crayons. But when I opened the box and got a whiff of that wax, I had to draw silly things.

I don't really read the book, but for some reason as soon as I opened my daughter's box of crayons I was compelled to draw Daredevil.
These are washable crayons so that my wife and I can clean them off of the walls, the doors, the furniture, my desk, my computer monitor, and occasionally our daughter. I had envisioned him being in the rain and I was going to do this cool washed out thing by wiping over the drawing with a damp paper towel. Turns out "washable" does not mean the same thing as "watercolor." Oh well. I work with color pretty rarely so overall I'm happy with the results.

I learned color with oil pastels, so this translates very much so.
    cray-- ON!!

Edit: This is the first time I feel I have successfully captured my likeness... Even though its just a quick crayon sketch, I feel like my line work was spot on, and its thrown me into a manic exuberance.

I would have killed for an "army green" crayon, somehow my 24-pack's only greens are a green that's very bright, yellow-green, and green-yellow.
