Food Guide: 15 mins from PAX Australia

PhnomenonPhnomenon Registered User regular

TL;DR: You need to eat. Here's a Google Map of food within 15 minutes of PAX Australia

I thought that I'd split food and drink into multiple threads: those close to PAX (in this thread) and those further away (forthcoming), and possibly a separate thread on Melbourne bars/pubs. I'm happy to do requests to sate any of your gustatory peccadilloes. Apart from Showgrounds Village, I've eaten everywhere on this list. The big hole in it is Moonee Ponds - I haven't eaten there but it's a ten minute bus ride from the showgrounds - so if anyone lives there, recommend away. Any additional input would help, and I'll add it to the map.

1. Walking: About 5 minutes away
Exit the showgrounds on Epsom Rd, and turn right.

Showgrounds Village has a supermarket and a kebab shop - I haven't eaten at either, so anyone who has been there, let me know.

2. 57 Tram line, towards city: 10 minutes away
Flemington has excellent Malaysian food, a few local pubs and cafes, and Melbourne's classiest Ethiopian restaurant.
Catch Tram no.57 towards the city from stop 33-Melbourne Showgrounds/Union Rd (Ascot Vale). Alight at stop 25 - Wellington St/Racecourse Rd, approx 10 minutes. (timetables)

    I approve of this list.
Footscray is brilliant for Vietnamese, I have a favourite, but I honestly don't even know the name of it :\
The Quiet Man on Racecourse road is amazing. They do this soup served in a hollowed out loaf of bread. It's awesome! And of course, it's an Irish pub so it gets points there too!

    As for Moonie Ponds:
I can heartily recommend Kao San Road - lovely Thai food, quite decently priced.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1507514/restaurant/Melbourne/Khao-San-Road-Moonee-Ponds

There's a bunch of fast foodish places on Puckle st. too.

Any big recommendations? In the vein of, "Oh, you're in Melbourne? You must go to *****, darling."

Vue de Monde is amazing as is Bistro Vue.

I also highly reccomend Spice Temple, European, Chin Chin, Mamasita, Movida and Papa Goose

All of these are in the CBD and some can be hell of pricey but worth it in my opinion.

Melbourne CBD food, bars and coffee

In short: here's a Google map of bars and food that I recommend around the Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs . On the map, places marked in blue are cheap (<$20 a meal), yellow ($20-30 mains), red (>$30 mains). Coffee and bars are self explanatory. At a guess, most people will be staying in or near the CBD and most places on the list are a short walk or tram ride away.

All of the top end places are worth booking now, if you're keen on haute cuisine. Attica/Movida may already be booked out.

Otherwise, you'll have a good time eating and drinking anywhere on this list. There are hundreds more restaurants and bars around. For other recommendations (alongside the usual suspects: urbanspoon, yelp, timeout), it's worth reading Broadsheet or Three Thousand. If you've got an iPhone, the free Play Melbourne app is worth the download.

Can I suggest adding Golden Fields (goldenfields.com.au)? Went there for the first time on the weekend and it's knocked Chin Chin off a spot for me.

The Abyssinian is excellent. Though I find it confusing that no one has talked about the excellent greek food in Melbourne yet. Though personally i'm more partial to Lebanese and Afghan food. Tiba's and Rezas respectively in Brunswick. Cheap and amazing.

For those looking for an ethnic feel, Lonsdale St in Melbourne is known as Little Athens - many Greek restaurants and shops including the famous Stalactites.

I am surprised that no one mentioned Squires Loft steak house. The last time I ate there (on a beer companies dollar) the steak was best described as "Emo" as it was tender enough it would cut itself. Along with that, I would also recommend Platform 28 at Docklands, opposite the Etihad Stadium and next to Channel 9 in Melbourne. For those who are interested in trains as well as gaming, Platform 28 is one of the old goods sheds from the late 19th century turned into a small business/restaurant area.

I don't think I saw Wagamama or Blue Train on the list either at Southbank - a minutes walk from the Belgian Beer Cafe and upstairs from both Bearbrass and PJ O'Briens. All of these places are very well serviced by public transport.

For a bit of trivia, Southbank is where John Batman first landed when exploring the southern waters. Melbourne wasn't the first name suggested either - the initial suggestion for naming the area was Batmania.

I would move to Melbourne if it was called Batmania.

The Quiet Man is reasonably close to PAX itself. Awesome food as well.

There is also quite a few english/irish pubs in the CBD - Pugg Mahones, Bridie Oreillys, Dan OConnell (bit further out), Elephant and the Wheelbarrow, and of course the Young and Jackson is smack bang across from Fllinders Street station, which has pretty much everything you could want to drink.. either way, I intend to be consuming a large amount of Guiness :D

Ahh swoon, I LOVE Melbourne for dining. By the last day of PAX you can guarantee I'll have gained like fifteen kilos in sushi-weight alone...

I have to agree with SandmanTech in regards to Squire's Loft though. Best steakhouse in the city. They are owned by the same people who run Rare steakhouse and all of their meals and chefs are absolutely monumentally fantastic.

The question is can they actually cook (read: not cook) a decent blue steak. SO SICK OF YOU SILLY HOBBITS CHARCOALING MY LOVELY FRESH MEATSES!! I HATES IT BLACK! I WANTS IT FRESH! *gollum*

    Heya,

Just wanted to add a few things to the food around the Flemington/Kensington Area. The Kensington Information probably isn't helpful to you unless you are staying in accommodation near the grounds and have a car. Alternatively you get off at Kensington Station which is before NewMarket. I may go slightly OT.... I apologise in advance.

For 5 Min away (Show ground village):
Pacino's is a family restaurant. It's 'Italian' but does a fair variety of 'pub' food. It's licensed, food is decent but moderately priced. It's more expensive than say Lazy Moe's, not as generous in portion size as Lazy Moe's but if you have kids or don't want a pub atmosphere it's pleasant enough. It also has Alfresco if being outside is really your thing.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1552437/restaurant/Melbourne/Ascot-Vale/Pacinos-Flemington

The Fish place is average, as is the Charcoal chicken place. I haven't been to the kebab place. The shops in that area don't always stay open very long. There has been an Asian noodle box place there off and on for ages but I believe it's closed down.

There is a deli that serves a nice Coffee in the actual Coles Showground building, as well as a bakery. It's a big coles, large bakery section etc.

There are most of the big name ATM's there too (including a Bendigo Bank). Also... in case of wardrobe malfunction or foot agony there is an Urban Target as well. Also a Chemist and Newsagency. If you have a small issue and need to pick someone up you should be able to do it there.

    2. 57 Tram line, towards city: 10 minutes away

Just want to add another great Malaysian place to eat.
Grand Tofu is a great little restaurant. It's alot smaller than the others and I believe Family run. There signature dish is Yong Tofu, but I've tried alot of different things and most of them are tasty.

    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1610515/restaurant/Melbourne/The-Grand-Tofu-Flemington

Laksa King is the 'big one' that everyone knows, it's in the cheap eats. It IS CHEAP, its QUICK. But you have to realise as well that it's a you sit, you eat you pay, you go. They are definitely about Turnaround. But for the price you shouldn't be too disappointed.

Chef Lagenda is owned by the Chef that used to work at Laska King back in the day. It's not too bad.
Also, if those 3 are ALLLLLLL full. Don't worry too much because there is alot of restaurants around that area.
If you want a kebab, we go here and it's not too bad.
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1610515/restaurant/Melbourne/The-Grand-Tofu-Flemington, sort of near the Quiet man, which is a decent little pub.

Note: I personally really really dislike Chillipadi. Of the Malaysian offerings available in the area it's not my favourite.

Around Newmarket station (this is the stop you get off on if you catch the 57 to the showgrounds), there is a Woolworths, Italian Bakery, Fergusons bakery, and a really nice family run Deli.

    Near/in Highpoint
Lazy Moes: Cheap....big portions. below Average
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1480617/restaurant/Melbourne/Footscray/Lazy-Moes-Maribyrnong
I'm a little iffy recommending this one, they used to be alright, it's been a bit ordinary lately.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1654065/restaurant/Melbourne/Footscray/Sambal-Kampung-Maribyrnong
Hogs Breath: Not your best option.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1717782/restaurant/Melbourne/Hogs-Breath-Cafe-Maribyrnong
La'Porchetta : If your in a rush, don't go there. It's not the nicest of the Franchise.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1420295/restaurant/Maribyrnong/La-Porchetta-Highpoint-Melbourne
Pancake Parlour (24 hours), only ever been for dessert so I can't tell you how the main meals are.

I'll only do Kensington if anyone is interested. It's more a breakfast/coffee hub. Though Kensington Pizza isn't bad for traditional 'aussie' pizza. Crisp is good for 'Gourmet' pizza.

I have 2 places for great views of the city if your want.
Naked for satan: The Rooftop view is gorgeous, I think it's at least 270 degrees of a pretty unhindered view of the city.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1544244/restaurant/Melbourne/Naked-For-Satan-Fitzroy

Fathers Office: Has a nice view of the inner city and Library. Not badly priced, the hotwings are overrated. But if your in the city and want a nice view whilst your in/outide might be worth a visit.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1703154/restaurant/CBD/Fathers-Office-Speakeasy-Bar-and-Restaurant-Melbourne

Don't bother with Pancake Parlour. It's expensive, gaudy and below average food wise (with mains).

They used to be an awesome family restaurant but the last 5 years hasn't treated them well.

If you willing to travel back to Melbourne, there is a restaurant called The Chocolate Budda in Federation Square (Across the road from Flinders Street Station)

A bit expensive (~$20 per meal) but oh so good! :D

Note: They actually don't have any chocolate desserts (Last time I checked) (Don't say I didn't warn you)

Just to update people, Bridie O'Reillys in Little Collins St is closed - found out when I went to check on my annual ANZAC day booking. A standing booking for the last 10 years.

Know how hard it is to find a pub for 100 people on ANZAC day in the city?

    Very inconsiderate :)

It's a shame too. The pancake place we have in Brisbane is pretty awesome and I was really disappointed when I visited Melbourne.

The Pancake Manor will never be beaten in my opinion. I don't go there as often anymore but when I do, I always leave as happy as the time before :3 And when we eventually have LoL events in Brisbane I'm gonna force all the LoL players to the Pancake Manor!

This is such a noble thread that I feel I have to contribute in some small way. Here's some places I eat regularly.

Brunswick: Bimbo's Delux often has $4 gourmet pizzas (including dessert pizzas) which are top notch. See their website for times. Be warned though, it fills up fast so get in and grab a seat before the pizzas drop to $4.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/760194/restaurant/Melbourne/Bimbo-Deluxe-Fitzroy

Footscray: I highly recommend Hao Phong as being cheap, loud and crowded with fast service and amazing food.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1431796/restaurant/Melbourne/Hao-Phong-Footscray
Also in Footscray is Olympic Donuts. This inexpiable shack next to a train station has been selling fresh cooked hot jam donuts for over 30 years. They're something like 60 cents each and will melt off your face with sugary goodness. If you're visiting the Footscray Market or having a meal in Footscray, I strongly recommend popping by.
    http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/71/1492659/restaurant/Melbourne/Olympic-Doughnuts-Footscray

Seddon: Just past Footscray you'll find Seddon, which has a few good places that serve breakfast well into the afternoon. Seddon Deadly Sins is my favorite, I recommend the Mixed Berry Pancakes or Gluttony (eggs on toast plus mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes and onions).

In the name of all things nerdy, everyone knows of Manabar and its geeky alignments however Robot Bar has long supported the Anime community and screen anime from their bar so would always give Yoshi (Yes that is right but he is not a green mario character :P) Mad props. Not to mention the back alley shinjuku bar style setup is amazing and one of only a few places in all of melbs that sell a cherry blossom liqueurs.

There's a strip of Indian places on Barkly St in West Footscray that are excellent and not that far from PAX. My pick is Aangan, if you're after North Indian food, or Dosa Hut for South Indian and biryani.
