Tornados in Oklahoma

Munkus BeaverMunkus Beaver You don't have to attend every argument you are invited to.Philosophy: Stoicism. Politics: Democratic SocialistRegistered User, ClubPA regular
Anybody seen this? Anybody on the forums near the are or got friends there?

The tornado hit a fucking elementary school and a hospital. People were running to pull kids out of the wreckage.

When the tornado went through T town, it was 50-100 yards away from hitting it and blowing it off the map.

Just...

Weather is fucking mean, you guys.

For my money, tornadoes are the scariest shit weather can pull on you. Hurricanes, blizzards, heat, etc all come with several days warning. Tornado will just drop on your town and maybe let you know about 10 minutes ahead of time.

That and they're the easiest weather disaster to anthropomorphize. The sound, the look, the randomness: it's like a roaring cone of gale-force hatred bearing down and crushing everything in its path. I know it's a natural and impartial weather occurrence, but goddamn it certainly feels personal when it destroys your house and leaves the ones just a couple houses down completely untouched.

A few days before the Oklahoma one, a couple of tornadoes hit the town next to mine here in Texas. A few of my friends lost their homes but at least they're otherwise alright.

Tornadoes are both fascinating and terrifying. I wonder if @Chimera saw the one up in Oklahoma?

Yesterday weather reports were freaking me out because the shit was supposedly happening here too. Tornado watch for all of north-east Texas and all, god that was so dumb. As far as I know no tornadoes touched down. But I bought into it because I haven't gone through a tornado before and I'm terrified of it.

Was the tornado that took out the elementary school the one that was 2-miles wide?

That reminds me so much of the aerial views of Tucscaloosa and the surrounding cities.

It cut a swathe from my house down 15th street and missed the hospital by a close 100 yards or so.

Put in another way: You used to be unable to see the hospital from the main thoroughfare because of the trees blocking the view.

That first image is crazy. I can't even imagine how fucking lucky and thankful you'd have to feel just for living in the cul-de-sac on the right.

I could be wrong but AP said it was an EF5. A mile and a half wide. 200+ mph winds. Hurricanes don't typically get that fast.
A tornado like that isn't just a simple funnel, it has other smaller vortices in it. A really big tornado with little baby ones inside it.
2x4s will be thrown like javelins into concrete curbs.

You don't fuck around with tornadoes, and when one the size of that monster comes into town you either get your ass into the basement or you go to Church.

I still can't help but feel awe and amazement when I see videos of tornadoes, but I always think of the families that lose their homes and loved ones and must start from scratch again. Watching people's reactions to tornadoes and talking about how awesome it is can get upsetting because they're getting enjoyment out of something deadly and destructive. I saw people this time around doing very stupid things, getting way too close to the tornado to get the perfect shot.

One time a storm was coming and there were tornadoes surrounding my city and I was freaking out and ended up vomiting in the bathroom.

Those tornado sirens are probably one of the scariest things I've ever heard

Yeah I was 15-20 minutes away from Moore, I live in Norman.

I've lived in Tulsa my whole life up until January and T-Town seems to have some sort of magic anti tornado forcefield so this was super terrifying and unknown to me.

Luckily Norman got away with pretty much no damage and my friends in Moore were seeing a movie at the Warren Theater which had only superficial damages and no injuries.

Mainly wondering if @Chimera and other OK crew were all right.

Seeing the this kind of damage up close is surreal.

Especially when it's a place you hung out in for 75% of your life.

Would you say you're more afraid of tornadoes than hurricanes? I've truthfully never experienced either, but people that live in areas with hurricanes seem pretty chill about them. I suppose they are generally less destructive, and there's more of a warning. Tornadoes happen pretty quickly.

Chimera hasn't posted since Novemberish. i last heard from her in March. she's probably okay, though it'd be nice to see her on the forums again; hopefully, she's just too busy taking photo commissions.

aunt says my parents are fine, and my cousins on the other side of the fam have designed a tshirt and started a fundraiser for the OK Red Cross. my Norman folk are fine, and i don't know that i have any in Moore to think of...

even when you come through a tornado okay, it's a thrilling sort of terror to watch one. i mean, the joke is that you can tell a born Okie from an import, 'cause as soon as the sirens go, the new guy gets in the basement -- a native goes out to see how close it is. there's a lot of truth to it.

i lived in OKC in 1999, and have been nearer to tornadoes in other instances. my grandfather slept through one and woke to find his front porch collapsed, and the workshop demolished. i'm glad that we just moved to Texas, and i didn't need to worry about my beau and cats, but Oklahoma is home. i dunno... every place has its risks, you just learn to adapt.

If I lived close to the coast I think I would still be more worried about tornadoes, mostly because they strike with very little warning and are so erratic in their path. With a hurricane you have several days to prepare and leave, and their path is pretty well-known.

You have about 15 minutes when a tornado hits. You have a week when a hurricane is coming.

These tornadoes happened especially quickly. I was down in Moore just 15 minutes before they came through, and made it back home before I turned on the TV and saw what they were doing.

These people were prepared as they could be. These schools have procedures for this kind of thing. Sometimes, it just isn't enough.

I try to go an visit once a month. Love that city.

My dad told me some bullshit story when I was a kid that would freak out when it stormed at all about how one of the Native American tribes did a ritual to keep the area that became Tulsa safe from disasters

Obviously it ain't true but jesus I am still amazed by how lucky Tulsa has been and hope it holds up forever

Yeah, growing up in OK every kid is shown what the tornado drill is at least twice a year and typically it is more than enough. Go to the innermost room, usually a closet or bathroom, crouch on the ground and cover your head and neck.

I was listening to the radio as it went througj Moore and we were heading to OU's shelter and it was the first time I have ever heard a meteorologist say "Do not go to the interior closet or bathroom, the tornado is too powerful and that will not save you." in my life. There really wasn' anything they could do with how much warning they had. Which is a tragedy.

Yeah. Mike Morgan said that over and over, and it was one of the most surreal things I'd heard in a while. When everything you've been taught about tornado safety is completely turned on its head like that... I was pretty far away by the time they hit (north of downtown), and it was still terrifying.

My friends who were vacationing in Oklahoma this week are safe, although the town near where they are was hit a little bit.

    Those images are absolutely harrowing.
