Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? A stand-up thread.

It's a pretty good time for comedy! Funny or Die and YouTube, Twitter, Vine, podcasts - comedy is easier to find and love than ever before. As a result, audiences are getting smarter, comedians are getting more adventurous, and shit's just generally rad across the board. Let's talk stand-up!

One of my very favoritest current comedians is Kyle Kinane. His "erudite dirtbag" persona speaks to me deeply, for reasons probably obvious to us all. Here is a delightful bit of his:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSUeKme8uJQ

John Mulaney is an excellent comedian who's profile has been raising pretty high in recent years, and deservedly so! You may know him as the dude what writes Stefon on SNL. Here is a fantastic story of his, which once caused me to laugh so hard I dry-heaved for like ten minutes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw6hv4168O0

But if we do nothing but post stand-up videos, we're no better than those animals in the YouTube thread. Fuck those guys! We can also talk aboud stand-up in real life. That we do ourselves. With our real bodies and faces and voices. Have you tried it? How'd it go? Do you want to try it? Why haven't you?

Staaaaand uuuuuuuup threeeeeeead gooooooooo

Ross Noble shows are an unforgettable experience, he's easily my favourite comedian of all time. And Adam Hills is the person I aspire to be.

    Hey.
    Hey Pooro.

None of my standup is online, mercifully. I don't have nearly enough stage experience to be comfortable recording myself yet. My work schedule makes it really, really hard to get up nearly as much as I'd like. It's been over a month since I've hit a mic.

I'm having trouble maintaining my energy level when I'm up there. When I have an on night, and I'm really into my material, I tend to do really well. But other times, I'll get stuck in my head and start muttering my way through rabbit trails and lose the thread on a story. I can sometimes bring it back, but usually not. One of those things that only comes with practice, I reckon.

I've been meaning to do more improv. I'm even more out of shape on that.

I was listening to the You Made it Weird episode with Anthony Jeselnik, and he was talking about how he found his voice in a stand-up class. And I was shocked that a guy that assured, whose persona is infallible, sociopathic confidence, had taken a stand-up class. For some reason, I think of those classes as... dorky? Or something? Which is really weird, since I think improv classes are vital for anyone wanting to try that out. I've never even entertained the idea of a stand-up class. Not sure why that is.

Do you have any prejudices against them? Would you take one?

I imagine they could be massively hit or miss, but if nothing else I could see a stand up class being able to prepare you against a lot of mistakes you might not think of beforehand.

yeah i have friends who have done them, but i'm with you. i feel like so much of stand-up is finding your own particular voice that i just don't really see how a class would help with that beyond forcing you out of your comfort zone. i think stand-up is a lot less 'technical' than improv, so whether or not something's good comes way more down to just whether or not it's funny. there's not a basic structure that you have to learn.

also, i just passed improv 401 and am applying for advanced study. yikes! my teacher's comments were very positive, but i still kind of am expecting to have to re-take 401 since i haven't done much in terms of outside groups.

I look back on them with a mixture of fondness and second hand embarrassment. I don't understand how you can get second hand embarrassment from...yourself??

I love stand up and I really appreciate those who do it well. It's one of those things I wish I could do, but realistically I doubt I would be very good at coming up with material.

Or, if you have Netflix, it is currently available on Instant streaming.

Although the film was made available by pirates shortly after release, C.K. believes that the rate of piracy was low due to the low cost of the product, convenient delivery, and the lack of a middle man profiting from its sales.

Even if you did download it illegally you could go back and pay for it, or you could torrent it after paying instead of using the provided servers. I think the most profitable aspect of the whole situation was that it was really easy to give Louis CK five dollars for a comedy special
