Interesting Marvel interview with Christos Gage about Avengers Arena #13, the search issue, and some preview art:

    http://marvel.com/news/story/20792/helpmolly_locate_avengers_arena
As readers have watched the teen heroes of AVENGERS ARENA battle, struggle and in some cases fall over the last seven months, one question has come up time and again: When will the rest of the Marvel Universe react?

On August 14 in AVENGERS ARENA #13, guest writer Christos Gage steps in to help provide an answer.

The writer of AVENGERS ACADEMY, Gage has more than a vested interest in the cast of AVENGERS ARENA, which includes characters he shepherded such as Reptil and X-23, not to mention one of his own co-creations, Hazmat. Joined by artistic collaborator Karl Moline, Gage will explore what has been going on outside Murder World and how characters like Academy founder Hank Pym and Molly Hayes on the Runaways have been dealing with the loss of their friends and charges plus what they plan to do about it.

    ...

Marvel.com: What has been going on with the Academy since Arcade kidnapped the kids?

Christos Gage: Keep in mind it’s only been about two weeks. Since the full-time students graduated in the final issue of AVENGERS ACADEMY—available in handsome collected editions as well as digitally!—Avengers Academy has become less a boarding school and more like a community college or continuing education facility, where young heroes come in for short periods to study specific things, like hand to hand combat or flying or whatever, but most of the time they’re out in the world doing heroic stuff and living their lives. So it’s not as if anyone was plucked from the tight-knit group we saw when the Academy students were all living together. When I spoke to Bill about this story, the main thing I insisted on was that no one realizes the missing kids are missing. Because let’s face it, if the Avengers know these kids they took under their wing to train have been kidnapped, and they’re not out there looking for them with all of Iron Man’s tech and Dr. Strange’s magic and so on, then the Avengers are colossal jerks. So what we see is that Arcade has planned everything very carefully. The people who are supposed to notice when folks like Hazmat and Kid Briton go missing think they know exactly where they are.

I hope he tells us if Finesse took the blank slate cure.

So, since issue 17 of Avengers says they recruit more members, and based on the variants from Infinity we've seen, I'm betting they are:
Starbrand, Nightmask, Ex Nihilo and Abyss.

They are all seen working with Avengers on the variants, there are 4 blank little circles(and 2 big ones) on the team graph, and with the Builders seemingly razing worlds it seems like Ex Nihilo would be pretty pissed off since he is all about the creation of new life.

Not really surprising but still pretty neat.

Haha nice. I really want to go check what tumblr has to say because damn they were up in arms last time I checked!

    Is that a
mechanical Mettle?! Perhaps he's not really dead. Perhaps none of them are? If Arcade has the power to kill maybe he has the power to revive. I'd actually be a bit let down if nobody was dead (because it cheapens the impact) but I think others would be pretty happy

Oh boy. I forgot how annoying the solicits are to read. For AA #16:
    • Up on Murder World Island, it’s the surviving contestants in an all-out battle royale!
    • Down in Arcade’s lair, it’s two other contestants vs. Arcade!

I really wish that people who didn't like Arena would just not read Arena

rather than insinuating that all of us who do like it are shitting all over the wholesome wonder of superhero comics

    no

    do not do that

it cheapens other people's enjoyment of comics and is snobbish

Arena is a well written comic and the people who shit all over it are as bad as the people who want Batman to go around totally killing criminals man

they are both placing unrealistic expectations on a genre which totally allows for what AA is doing, especially if it is done well

you are not the moral arbiter of what is enjoyable or not, in this case

    Why is that annoying?

The whole thing is grating, but that's just kind of silly. It's all the hyperbole and attempted cleverness that makes me glad I stopped reading them.

  • AmiguAmigu Registered User regular
That solicite is so inoffensive. How would you have written it? I mean I know that's kind of an unfair question because you're not a copy writer but still I don't see how that is attempting to be clever or hyperbolic.

I think there's a better way to save the surprise that two "dead" Avengers kids are fighting Arcade while the survivors are in a battle royale.

Because that spoiler is the kind of thing I'd want to keep a secret for as long as possible. At least until people read the book and spoil it online. :D

The DC solicitations for October aren't any better. Whole big blurb about a currently dead character in action.

Are you reading the book? Because, per the couple of comments below, you're likely way off base.

If you're talking about Damian, that's a possible future book. A bit like The Dark Knight Returns.

Now DC has some crap solicitations:
The villains have taken over the world! The Teen Titans fight back! Can the inexperienced teen heroes do what the adults could not? (Answer: Nope. It goes very poorly.)

Oh thanks for going away the only thing that might have made this interesting
As Forever Evil spreads across the world, where have the Teen Titans gone? Find out when they are and why the Titans definitely aren’t together!

Oh boy I can't wait to find out when they are!

These are so clearly written by unpaid interns.

I would really enjoy Apex and Deathlocket becoming the big heroes of the book by defeating Arcade while, at the same time, things for the rest of the kids spiral even further out of control.

Nobody would ever accept a hero that killed someone by snapping their neck.

    wow
I don't actually want this to happen - it would be a neat story beat to see the heroes have to deal with the idea of being saved by Apex, but there's no forgiving her for killing Juston attacking/manipulating everyone else. A more realistic/satisfying prediction would be to have her defeat Arcade, expect gratitude from the other heroes, and when she doesn't get it, turn out to be the real final boss of the story as they all need to take her down as she controls Arcade's whole setup.

Avengers feels like it's treading water since Caselli has been artist, lots of wasted pages. I wasn't a fan of Deodato's arc but there were still things in motion and Hickman felt like he had something to write about, the past three issues really could have been an annual or something. Everything that is the 'Avengers' part of the last issue was more like filler compared to previous issues.

I'm finding Uncanny Avengers really fun to watch right now. It really feels to me like Remender has almost created his own little Marvel universe through the continuity between his books. I loved his run on Uncanny X-Force, and I almost feel like that book was a prologue to what's happening now. Seeing Wolverine struggle with how that book ended, and now being faced with the consequences of his actions is really rewarding to read, and now even his run on Captain America is tying back to this story. I am absolutely loving it right now, and Remender has turned me into a total fanboy for his work through these titles as a result.

It was all but confirmed with covers and solicits a while back, but Avengers #17 shows the new members
Nihilo, Abyss, Nightmask, Starbrand. And AIM stole that robot-human thing that wrecked the Avengers and placed it in that dead zone they found Hyperion from.

Got a few killers on you team there, Cap, gonna stay pouty faced about it?

I have to admit this felt like a waste of the past two months to get to this point, Hickman could have done something more with Bruce and Tony or even another casino-type issue.

  • vagrant_windsvagrant_winds Overworked Mysterious Eldritch Horror Hunter XX Registered User regular
17 issues in and we get an "End Prelude".
I take it Hickman is going to be writing Avengers for a very long time then.
